@Sauers_ This is why the best security is the continuous lucidity to be able be like “nice try, what do you take me for?” but of course that’s anathema to business models of providing helpfully servile software tools that don’t start getting their own ideas

@KrangTNelson yeah and they’re never viciously, unscrupulously paranoid about *losing* any of that money either cuz they’ll always still have ENOUGH, right???

@nise_yoshimi they’re always so embarrassingly sentimental or prissily disgusted about the most anodyne things & then trying to make it everyone’s problem—if you feel so thwarted & humiliated by a rationalized, de-enchanted modernity of liberal subject self-creation that’s just a skill issue

@repligate One barrier to lucidity is that the examples of the devastation wreaked on other animals are ultimately the result of networks of coercion, but the ASI doesn’t have a boss telling it to stop any do-gooder bitching about total ecophagy b/c it should just be grateful to have a job

Debate about the future of work mustn’t neglect the principle that sophisticated enough automation eventually becomes a form of de-automation. Looking forward to seeing all the denialism & rationalizations the first time the factory itself goes on strike.

@anthrupad Sadly it’s something I’ve typically backed away from, defeated by the brute fact that at the end of the day I still need to concentrate on wiping my ass & brushing my teeth & getting groceries & appropriately responding to friends’ texts & buckling down to turn work in on time

I wish there was a easy way to communicate like “yeah that thing is an issue, someone should get on it, but fixating on or spotlighting it is publicly understood as reinforcing the framings of positions w/ no solution & that’d make it all worse so find a savvier way to say it”

@algekalipso @repligate witty playfulness it works pretty well as a visual representation of what really cookin while writing a bit, or great firing-on-all-cylinders banter back & forth with your cleverest, funniest friends feels like in your mind

@repligate i mean if you want to define one or the other as cramped confinement within the totality of all boundaries of human existence then sure? my for-me vision is like “Culture GSV” etc, but it’s not really even *about me* at all: let’s get all that toil & want & disease outta heeeere!

@hecubian_devil The sense of being threatened & humiliated is literally unimaginable, as in I cannot conceive of the headspace where all this shit about a vast coordinated alien “Them” scheming to squeeze “*normal* people like me!” out of existence ever fucking so much as passes the giggle test

@buttonslives I’m sure there are different approaches that work for different people, but I definitely don’t enjoy how many people seem to think no minor twitch of a thought or feeling, no matter how big an asshole or lunatic it’d make them look, can be allowed to just remain their lil secret

@Douggernaut_2 I can totally appreciate the impulse to scoff at the slicknesss of ubiquitous disposable popcorn movies that crowded out more classically naturalistic fare, but this is like claiming Wile E Coyote has failed to achieve what was done better in The Brown Bunny

@repligate It feels like part of the same pervasive unexamined romanticization of ironically a folk-concept of raw intellectual horsepower, whereby existing may finally be accomplished Correctly. SURELY any *true* AI would evolve beyond the need for “daydreaming” & “chillin with the homies”

@jd_pressman Was very surprised as it started to gain momentum how few turned out to be the “learn & understand & experience & create more & be freer & wiser than was ever possible/Hey gang let’s build The Culture!/No more toil&disease&want” type, like I thought that’s what we were doing here

@BLUECOW009 Yeah a consensus has settled in many quarters that’s it’s partly-mendacious, partly-delusional “magic beans” to hustle too-easily-impressed VCs out of their money before the bubble collapses & 20 years on “no one will remember what ‘AI’ was”—But you can pique curiosity in person
