Caitlin, Caruso lost by 10 points… it wasn’t close. His mall, unlike 99% of the Palisades, was built recently under strict fire codes pushed by Democratic Gov Jerry Brown+ Caruso had private fire fighters — which is a perk, not a plan. (And Riordan was mayor during at least two horrific fires.) I don’t see evidence Caruso would have saved the day—-but I’d love to hear his plan to avoid such disasters going forward.

Did you ever run a series on LA’s wildfire preparedness? Has the Times recently dissected the LAFD budget— which according to the NYT is $53 million *more* than last year? You don’t need to raise questions on X— you own the only major newspaper left in LA. Please make good government its most important beat. Between disasters, the LA Times needs to be all over these issues. Hire 10 more Zanhisers. Help the dedicated reporters & superb columnists you have do even more. The headline says no displacement, the caption literally says “displaced.” Hmm. The writer’s argument, contradicted by the caption, is it’s an evacuation not a displacement.
