We don’t read enough poetry.
I have no data to support this but I know it’s true.
Here’s a gateway drug of a poem.

This joke is for the 12 folks who might remember. Once upon a time on SNL, during “During Deep Thoughts” Jack Handey said ‘if you ever drop your keys into a pool of molten lava, let em go, cause man, they’re gone.’ I’ve thought about that line for 30 years.

Teachers
I went looking for a way to teach conclusion writing to students & I didn’t find it
So I made it
1.5 pages I hope will help young writers
It’s all yours. Hope it helps.
Teachers want to be in schools teaching young people.
Teachers want their students & themselves to be safe.
Teachers can adapt & provide excellent learning opportunities in a 100% remote environment.
More than 1 thing is true.
We will be ready to do what’s best for kids.
“Teachers are doing too much.”
“Teachers are doing too little.”
“This will redefine school.”
“This will make us appreciate traditional school.”
It’s confusing right now.

I learned something yesterday about conversation skills that blew my mind
Small talk doesn’t suck after all
We suck at it
Give skilled conversationalists ANY topic & they will make it anything but small
One path to crush the day:
💥read something short before leaving bed
💥in the shower think about two things you hope to accomplish today
💥decide on one person you want to connect with today
💥catch yourself saying “have to” today & change it
💥reflect on your day before bed
Instead of ice breakers what if we ask our students to talk about someone else?
Many of my students don’t enjoy talking about themselves on Day 1
This year I’m going to ask Ss to talk about someone they admire or inspires them or someone just plain fun
I’ll report back

One of my favorite aspects making a podcast is learning how others work. Here’s
@tylercowen
sharing his interviewing philosophy. Very different from mine!
Jason Maxwell is one of the best baseball coaches, at any level, on the planet. I've been around thousands of coaches, the way he coaches, runs a meeting, and cares for players is incredible.(He is the good looking one)

Bad loss yesterday. At a team meeting today I posed this question: “You’re a junior in college. Your new friends say ‘I didn’t know you played high school baseball, what was it like? How was your experience?’” Their answers erased the loss and then some. Try it w/ your team.
Some separators:
🎯Buying dessert for a couple you know is out to dinner
🎯Sending a gift for no reason “thinking of you”
🎯Bragging about someone to their boss or teacher
🎯Send a ty note to someone for something long ago
🤜🏻These help on the quest to get 1% better every day.
A question hit me hard today.
When people say “my students aren’t motivated to work hard”
Do they expect them to come that way? Motivated and ready to learn?
Isn’t that a huge part of the job? Motivating them, or at the very least creating the best conditions in which to be?
Came home to a wedding invite from a former player. 5 years as a College head coach back when I “knew it all” & was far better at Xs & Os—zero wedding invites from guys I recruited. 3 years as HS coach (1w/him) with core values & working on relationships...
Something to this.
Can we all please stop saying:
“If schools re-open...”
They never closed.
Buildings closed.
Learning and education never have and never will be contained to a building.
Language matters.

Sunday night Storytime.
Several years ago, a graduating student of mine asked me if he could speak to me in the hallway.
Gulp.
It was early June & I couldn’t imagine what he wanted to talk about.
Just dropped my son off at school for the first day of 3rd grade. PSA for all parents out there: the pollen count must be super high because my eyes started to water as I drove away.

🗣Coaches.Happy Friday. Today’s a good day to text 3 of your student-athletes & see how they are doing. Not“are you ready for the season?” Not“did you lift today?”Try “what’s new?” or “what was the highlight of your day?” Something to check in on the person. It will be worth it.

It’s inspiring JG! 👊🏼👏🏻
Morning thought for coaches. The worst coach I’ve ever seen did something better than me. I might do something better than the best coach I’ve ever seen. It’s not all or nothing. Keep growing.
If you’re seeing this you’ve believed in me, encouraged me, supported me, helped me find clarity, or rooted me on.
I don’t take that lightly & I don’t care if it sounds corny.
I am grateful beyond belief.
More coming!
Thank you.

W/o derailing the chat I want to crowbar in 1 of the great plays of all-time.On offense.1st & 3rd vs. LHP.R from 3rd breaks home. R from 1B breaks for second. If the pitcher picks over to 1B, runner slides in safely at home.If LHP delivers home, batter squeezes. Bedlam.

6 years ago today I hit publish on my podcast
I almost didn’t hit send because I found out there was a $7 dollar fee
Instead I did & it’s changed my life
Here’s a few things that shocked me along the way:
Many coaches stop recruiting athletes because of their use of social media. An underrated aspect of this is what our students & student-athletes (adults too of course) “like.” I’ve almost fainted at times seeing some of these “likes.” A like is an endorsement.
I haven’t bragged about my amazing former students in a while. Next week is Alumni Classroom III. One more English Class. This year we have a band, three guest speakers, and all kinds of surprises. 64 YES RSVP. 15 MAYBE. Notebook required. Special night.
I made my mother-in-law cry this morning.
Her husband is having a procedure.
I was driving her to see him.
Her spirits low.
I asked her a question.
She laughed.
Then she told a story of her husband proposing 55 yrs ago.
Happy tears.
There’s magic in questions 🪄
I haven’t found a bigger separator than doing what you say you’re doing to do.
“I’ll call you Monday.”
“I’ll listen & report back.”
“Let’s hang out soon.”
“I’ll read it & get back to you.”
Most people don’t.
If you do, you’re in a separate pile.
I’m not gonna lie... I’m scared.Doing
@getoneword
for five years & I can tell you now that this will be the biggest challenge yet. It is easier for me to interview
@JonGordon11
than to eat a realistic portion & move! Everything I’ve read said move toward fear so... here goes!
Two questions to ask today:
1. Whose day will you make today?
2. How will you get 1% better today?
Ask them in the morning.
Reflect on them at night.
Watch your life change.
Nick Saban taking notes is my new favorite thing. I go to conferences and see people NOT TAKING NOTES. 🤷🏼♂️ I don’t get it. What does your notebook habit look like?
Two days in the building as a teacher prepping for students next week.
One thing is clear: custodians are in mid-season form.
Incredible above and beyond work being done by these men and women.
3 years ago today I ran out of excuses to not launch a podcast.
“
I don’t know how to do cover art.
I have no idea what
@libsyn
is.
I don’t know if I can do it weekly.
I don’t have time.
“
Episode 140 is out now.
What project are you waiting to launch?
Give it a go.
I almost didn’t launch my podcast 3 years ago.
My last two interviews were my childhood hero and the interviewer my childhood hero and I watched on ESPN.
Good things happen to those who act.
1) Prepare strategically
Before every interview, think of 3 ideas you want to land & make sure to land them.
These can be ‘greatest hits’ stories, witty anecdotes, or current projects, but they should be practiced.
Comedians calculate to the syllable
Rehearse like a comedian.
I told my students that I was lucky enough to have a copy of Atomic Habits.
My Student: "Can I borrow it?"
Me: "You would have to write an application to get your hands on a book this good."
My Student: "Hold my water bottle."
2) Decide on your energy level.
This is the vibe you bring to the convo. It should be a slightly heightened form of your natural state.
Think of a 1-10 scale where Johnny Depp is a 5 and Robin Williams is an 11. Figure out where you want to be and practice. Don’t wing it.
@jbteacherman
In cass Kelly can’t detail the process here, he’s written about it online. This though, is an amazing curation of the process that gives full credit to Kelly.
My son today said “I love my art class, I learned a new way to draw a cat.”
Can we all learn to define a successful day more simply?
It doesn’t have to be monumental to be a successful day.
Getting
#1percentbetter
sometimes means learning how to draw a better cat.
Our students have been ABSURDLY kind and graceful during remote and hybrid teaching. I need to tell them more often. S/O to

#WhatTheStudentsTaughtMe
No such thing as a dumb question
But if there werrrrrre they might fall into these categories:
•From a place of hate
•Designed to make someone look bad
•Reveal something private
•Repeat something just asked
•Come from no research
•Wastes time for others
What else?
You did something good yesterday. It helped someone. It felt good. It was good work. You felt your energy spike. The feedback was positive.
Do it again today.
And tomorrow.
Consistency isn’t sexy, but it’s how you get

Someone today will say “thank goodness it’s Friday!“
Reply with “I hear you. What was the highlight of your week?”
See what happens
Best question I heard today:
How often do you have to remind yourself that some of the things you’re teaching are obvious to you but not obvious to someone else?
@heydannymiranda
to
@dickiebush
📌A reminder: When someone gives you a compliment, say ‘thank you.’
You don’t have to say ‘ew I look ugly today.’
You don’t have to say ‘actually I’m gaining weight.’
You don’t have to say ‘my hair? It looks like a bird’s nest!’
Don’t even have to return one.
Say thanks.
Don’t like my team, blame the players. Don’t like my players, blame the school. Don’t win enough, look for another job. Don’t like my AD,jump ship. Don’t like parent involvement, make fun of them. What in the world are we teaching these kids? Stop it. Be resilient, plant roots & fight.
I don’t know who needs to hear this & I say it w/ love, but please stop saying:
“This type of teaching isn’t sustainable.”
•We don’t know what is sustainable until we sustain it
•Humans have sustained far worse
•It’s not helpful
•Humans are awful at making predictions
