Excited to be joining
@womensaid
as CEO next week but horrified at news of
@riseuk
& 3
@scotwomensaid
services losing local authority funding to non-specialist providers. Stats make clear domestic abuse isn’t gender neutral, women are dying & we have to protect women’s refuges
If I have to attend another vigil for a women devastatingly robbed of her life by another violent man, & have to say the same things re what needs to be done by government,police,criminal justice etc, I’ll lose my hard-won attempt at professional calm. Perhaps I need to…
The most heartening news of the night is the that brilliant
@jessphillips
feminist campaigner and incredible supporter of women’s rights and ending domestic abuse, held her seat.
It’s an exciting time for Women’s Aid as we welcome our incoming chief executive,
@FarahNazeer
.
Together, we will work to build a world where
#domesticabuse
is no longer tolerated.

The International Women’s Day parliamentary debate is scheduled this week.
@jessphillips
will again read out names collated by our sister project
@CountDeadWomen
of women suspected killed by men since IWD last yr.
We have written to every MP for whom one of them was a constituent
An 888 number for worried women?We appreciate the urgency of the action however an app does little to alleviate the cultural & funding crisis on
#VAWG
& again places the burden on women to protect themselves rather than address the issue of male violence.
All women who speak up for survivors and seek to amplify their voice, are sadly & inevitably going to be attacked for doing so, often by privileged men. Today is one of those days for me. No matter, the day it stops is the day we are closer to ending
#VAWG
💜
Angel Lynn is now suffering from brain damage but her abuser could walk free in 2 yrs. This sends out a dangerous message about how seriously we take violence against women — judges need to send a clear message that domestic abuse will not be tolerated.
📺Earlier today on
@BBCBreakfast
we explored the key indicators of abuse and discussed the devastating experience of Angel Lynn. We need to send a clear message to perpetrators that domestic abuse is utterly intolerable — sentencing must always reflect this.
Closing the day on being
@womensaid
for a year. Thank you to the incredible staff team
@womensaid
,to brilliant women from the sector, to survivors whose hope & courage are ever inspiring, for your kindness & guidance. So much has been done, so so much left to do. Roll on year 2!
It's been 3 years since we lost Bibaa & Nicole to a horrific act of male violence. We remember them and honour their lives by continuing to fight against gender based violence & the crimes committed by Met police who we should be able to trust to keep us safe
#EndAbuseTogether
The Met‘s violent behaviour & force against women gathering peacefully in Clapham to remember a women lost to male violence marks a new societal low.
@BorisJohnson
@pritipatel
what are you doing to redress this urgently & what are you going to do to make the UK safe for women?
Goodness, anyone else finding the inclusive, non tribal tone, & focus on delivery & the country a heartening change? Obviously we shall we what happens but a strong positive start. However I really want
@Keir_Starmer
to outline plans on ending violence against women & girls.
First day, have logged on and looking forward to meeting the team, members and stakeholders! Happy to join a movement where we are working towards a world where domestic abuse is no longer tolerated and all women can access the services that fully meet their needs.
It’s an exciting day today at Women’s Aid as our new chief executive officer,
@FarahNazeer

Here’s to working together to build a world where

Fed up of privileged white people(in mostly white teams)patronise me re racism & inclusion. Maybe your selfawareness is so poor,you don’t know you are doing it. You’ve read a book - I've lived with racism my whole life. This behaviour is a racist micro aggression. Read about that
Thank you so much for the incredibly warm welcome, and well wishes! I am really looking forward to starting

whilst also will hugely miss my fantastic colleagues
@ActionAidUK
Very disappointed by
@metpoliceuk

Women will hold you to account.

"We absolutely did not want to be in a position where enforcement action was necessary. But we were placed in this position because of the overriding need to protect people’s safety."
I met
@clairethrossell
yesterday. I can’t remember the last time I was as inspired, as outraged, as saddened and as motivated to secure for the sake of children, an end to the courts' 'pro-contact' culture. Thank you Claire.
Great to meet
@pritipatel
yesterday to discuss our shared commitment to address
#DomesticAbuse
We also shared the work our brilliant members are doing across the country to support survivors and save lives.
Good to meet with
@FarahNazeer
, CEO of
@WomensAid
, which does such valuable work with victims & survivors of domestic abuse. Tackling violence against women & girls is a key priority for this government & I was pleased to hear Farah's perspective on work being done in this area.
I know that to almost everyone,my posting a picture of the knickers I hastily bought my 7-year is weird. BUT look carefully-there are dancers of colour on them. We couldn’t believe it- esp as they are standard off the shelf. ‘They look like me too’ said the little one. Glad & sad
Thrilled to have been invited to speak on behalf of
@womensaid
at
@UKLabour
National Women’s Conference today at 4pm on ending violence against women girls and specifically
#DomesticAbuse
- together with an amazing panel of brilliant women.
My thoughts, and all of us at
@Womensaid
, are with the families of the girls targeted in the horrific Southport attack. This is not an isolated incident but part of the epidemic of violence against women and girls. We’ve waited for change long enough – government must act now.
I don’t really know what to say. Only that you must watch this heart breaking, dignified interview. The words ‘As a mother I am broken’ should haunt us for a very long time. Here is the chilling reality of

to ensure survivors of

Our sector and the feminist movement began with activism and protest, for the media to continue to report the violence of these far-right groups as 'protests' is incorrect and offensive.
Online abuse really serves to reinforce my determination to ensure that I do all I can to support the

Just got in trouble with the school for allowing my 6-year old to paint her nails to reflect pride during this month. I stand by my decision to empower my daughter to peaceful protest. Although I’m a bit worried about my chat with the teacher tonight. Vive la revolution!
A vile, shameful example of why women & esp. women of colour have to fight for fairness & justice.

So when women in the women’s sector say we need to address the fundamental cultural problem we have and street lightening is not going to solve the problem - this - right here - is what we mean.
A man got 5 years for killing his wife because he was “stressed” in lockdown. A man got 18 months for killing his wife because she “burnt the dinner”. A man got 18 months for killing his girlfriend because she “liked rough sex”

Horrific attack on presenter Yasmin Evans, thinking of her today. All women should be able to feel safe, not be in fear of violent men. Assaults like these can result in long-lasting trauma for victims. Our culture must no longer tolerate violence

I am delighted to say that the Flexible Fund is now live, after campaigning for this important resource for survivors and their children. We know from the pilot that accessing these funds can enable survivors to take vital first steps towards a life free of abuse.
Please share in solidarity: The

& secure a better future. Applications via member services & our delivery partners:
The government shortfall in funding means that some women and children experiencing
#domesticabuse
& are at the most vulnerable time of their lives, will be unable to access support when their lives depend upon it. Surely
@RishiSunak
can do better than this.
The £19m announced in
#budget
is not enough. Even with the £165m for next year, these figures are nowhere near the £393m needed to keep
#domesticabuse
refuges & community-based services running.

What is happening to our cultural institutions? We have prominent media outlets and now the Brit Awards celebrating men who murder women. Being a musician or writer seems to mean we gloss over women being murdered. Totally disgusting.

Obvious political manifesto fact: If a political party doesn’t mention ending Violence Against Women and Girls in their manifesto- how much they care & prioritise it is obvious(zero). If they don’t mention funding to ensure it’s prioritised - it’s just more noise. We need action!

Not the finest reflection on our society if the government de facto consigns a woman to danger, abuse, harm and suffering because of her immigration status. I can’t think of anyone who thinks that reflects our society’s values. Government needs to show moral leadership here. 👇🏽
