This is a genuinely indigenous yet orthodox English Islam – marrying the universality and truth of the dīn to the particular customs and tastes of those seeped in over a millennium of British hymnals. So of course people are hating on it.

The masjid was packed today for jumu'ah, as usual. What's more, wherever you go in the world today you will find packed masajid – and in every single one everyone is doing the exact same thing. What's even more, this has been the case on every single Friday for 1400 years.

@ElegantiaeArbit Britain has a choice between a Neoplatonist philosopher-king with 1,000 years of royal blood flowing through his veins (Charles III), or a pagan manage-declinist technocrat whose chief skill is appealing to hoi polloi

A certain segment of western Muslims take the Muslim world's economic, military, state, technological, natural scientific, etc underdevelopment as a mark of moral superiority, and actively call for a future which would be worse on all these fronts. (1/9)

On one reading, this is the most explicitly pro-market statement I've ever seen in any major religion's sacred texts. The forces of supply and demand are real and sacred, the coordination function of prices is inviolable, and one who leaves the market alone does no injustice.

Whilst western conservatism is in many ways just progressivism on a time delay, one thing which surprises me is how totally opposition to immodest dress and vulgar speech has disappeared, even amongst religious conservatives

Possibly the worst objection to religion is that "religions posit miracles but we know today that miracles are impossible". We've always known that miracles are impossible given the ordinary functioning of the natural world - that's precisely what a miracle is! (1/2)

I was led to believe that ibn Rushd (Averroes) and ibn Khaldun were marginal figures in Islamic intellectual history.

I just wished that they had enough adequate personal protective equipment, and working tests. They have neither, and this will be markedly increasing the risks healthcare workers are currently facing. 😔
