The Qur'an refers to Bani Israel as 'Muslims'. After all, we believe they were the Muslims of their day, those rightly guided and devoted to God.
So when the Qur'an is speaking about Bani Israel, it's speaking about us. We're being warned from repeating our mistakes.
It amazes me that people who believe in the holiness of the Qur'an think that The Creator will waste time telling you stories of Bani Yisrael just to tell you how bad we are. The Torah tells the same kinds of stories about us to us. Why? These are warnings, instructions.
