Canada had a chance to be a supplier of natural gas to Europe. We had a chance at NA domestic energy security. We said no and now spend hundreds of millions buying Russian oil while Putin invades Ukraine.
May we never be this short sighted or stupid ever again.
With world's eyes on Ukraine/Russia, it is mind boggling that the US waived sanctions on Russian Nordstream 2 pipeline but blocked Canada's Keystone XL pipeline.
Even more mind numbing is Canada can't get LNG-export industry off the ground to help feed Europe's energy needs.

It's two years in. Most people are vaccinated. You can't keep asking people to cancel Christmas. We need more imagination on the public policy front than social misery.
Regarding the call between
@JustinTrudeau
and the premiers tonight.
Hearing:
Must be vaccinated to enter.
No non-citizens.
Advisory against non-essential travel.
Feds will also push provinces to enact domestic measures including limiting Christmas gatherings, even family.
Clean win for Team UCP tonight. Notley had no response when pushed on her record in office. Danielle was on the offensive, sounded reasonable and struck the tone UCP shy voters were looking for.
I looked at the NDP's last budget.
They project oil to be at $63 in 2020/21 and they would be running a $7 billion deficit.
UCP government projects oil at $70 today for 2022/23 and they project a surplus.
Tough work holding the line on spending to get us here.
As good a time as any to let folks know in the rest of the country that in Alberta, no gyms closed, no restaurants closed, no curfews, schools opened, and no cancellations of kid or adult sports.
I really wish we’d stop pretending there aren’t already big public health interventions in place (mandatory masking, capacity limits, REP, etc). If the leader of the opposition wants Quebec curfew policies, she should say so.
Big news from
@jkenney
when it comes to Alberta health capacity today.
If I heard right, total bed hospitalization has been stable at around 5300 in January.
In 2018, beds peaked at 5600.
ICU beds far below September and May '21 peaks.
Good news!
This
@jkenney
speech is hitting all the right notes. Contrition acknowledging the toughness of COVID, but finding his wheelhouse again reminding conservatives why we came together and filling the room with optimism for the future.
Alberta is back is right.

Most kids at drop off didn't have their masks on this morning at school drop off. Some did. Nothing wrong either way. Happy that kids have the choice for the first time in two years.
This is honestly so patronizing.
No energy worker in Alberta is sitting her crying out for eastern politicians to "pass a law" to transition their jobs.
Alberta's been attracting the largest investments in renewables in the country before this bill was even tabled.
Alberta, Saskatchewan and Newfoundland & Labrador’s energy workers will lead the energy transition.
That’s not just rhetoric.
That’ll soon be the law.
The Canadian Sustainable Jobs Act has been introduced in the House.
'Would you support or oppose more private sector delivery of healthcare procedures, including surgeries, so long as the principal of universal access/coverage is maintained?'
Support: 55%
Oppose: 29%
Unsure: 16%

Conservatives, ignore polls for next few days. There will be good & bad. Remember, the NDP in Alberta are the best funded, best organized, most consolidated left wing vote in AB history.
The ground game matters. Don’t sit this one out. It will be the difference.
Go get it! 👊
This isn’t talked about enough. Look at that lead the NDP had and lost, and the UCP tick at the end. That’s a campaign failure.
Wildrose had some whoppers in my time, but the 2023 NDP campaign lost a significant polling advantage over the past several months.
12 years ago in an office on the 2nd floor of the Teatro building, I worked in the Wildrose war room as a 22-year old with too many doughnuts in his system.
Yesterday, was honored to speak with now Premier

This may not get the coverage it deserves, but it is tremendous progress in how we treat moms and dads suffering from a loss and building a more compassionate society. Well done

"The three-point hike in Alberta’s corporate income tax rate is estimated to result in an investment loss of $1.1 billion to Alberta — and an employment loss of 33,700 jobs."
I've been asked a lot lately about how we can improve discourse in Alberta politics.
I'd suggest starting with not doxxing political staff for simply doing their job. If you want less good people to sign up to work in government, this is how to do it.

This didn’t happen by accident. The Job Creation Tax Cut, the Open for Business Act, lifting the film tax credit cap, and an aggressive strategy to attract investment. Policy matters.

Just want to say if you see a party staff member give them an extra thank you this morning. Stitching together a major event like the AGM isn’t easy and the staff put in long hours for months to make it happen.

I remember a lot of smug laughter about the ethical oil proposition regarding Canadian oil and gas for the past decade. Not so smug now.
Policies to shut down pipelines in North America have consequences.
In the 24 hours after Putin recognized two breakaway Ukrainian republics, the U.S. and its allies bought $700 million in Russian oil, gas and commodities.

This miracle of creation got to hit the ice between the first and second in front of fans at the Saddledome with his teammates. So proud of this little guy!!!

Curious. During the campaign the NDP confidently said their polls showed them leading. Now, back in opposition, they say they never even led! I think they know that the debate really was the turning point and don’t want to admit it.

It's worth observing that for the past two years the government was *hammered* for controlling costs. Now that we are seeing the fruits of that fiscal discipline, everyone wants to suggest a balanced budget happened because of $70 WTI estimates.

Easier for me to say today because I wear a blue sweater, but asserting a moral failure on your neighbour because they didn’t vote like you isn’t productive and won’t help you win in the future.

Personal best for me which made it even more fun. Thanks to all the organizers.
Brad’s right. We’ll wait till annual numbers are posted, but I’m certain the NDP will shatter records on money spent in the past 12 months, threw everything they had and the kitchen sink at the UCP, and are now 0 and 2 since their 2015 win.
Don’t forget how much left wing money was lit on fire securing an L for the NDP this election. Don’t take conservative victories for granted. This was a big win.

Albertans didn’t want to go back to the NDP or Premier Rachel Notley. The NDP brain trust will need to think about why that was moving forward.
@MauiPedersen
Hi Blake, congrats on joining now your fourth party. I noted that you didn't mention your active volunteer work for the Alberta Party for the past six years. Why is that?
Edge definitely goes to Danielle at first commercial break.
Right in her wheel house, talking power grid, carbon taxes, NDP record. Calm, collected. The comical portrayal showed in NDP ads isn’t what voters see on TV.
@GraemeMenzies
I'm fine with them buying whatever they want, they represent Canada and the Crown. I want to live in a country where our Governor General looks fire at state events and the residence of our prime minister isn't crumbling mould.
Lieutenant James Arthur Menzies (at the controls) was killed in 1917 defending England from a Zeppelin raid.

Maybe we shouldn't fester on old wounds, but the cynical politics of blocking pipelines not only has done nothing credible on the environment, it's harmed the West's foreign policy positions. Something pipeline proponents argued but fell on deaf ears.
Demand for Alberta's oil and natural gas resources is far from waning, in fact, it's Alberta energy workers who are leading the way to show how you can responsibly develop petroleum products driving to net zero production.
"Evan Menzies mastered No. 13 at Maple Ridge. With a pair of longtime friends as witnesses, Menzies hit a high draw with his nine-iron and watched from 135 yards back as that sweet shot landed about eight feet short of the flag and rolled in for the ace."
NEW - British Columbia will be dropping all capacity limits for organized events. This change will come into effect at some point in the next few days.

I saw some tweets today questioning why Alberta politicians were highlighting the importance of positioning Canada as a safe supplier of energy for North America and Europe.
This is why.
"Until then members have been clear. They want more unity and less drama in the United Conservative Party."
TENNANT: The UCP is more united than a lot of pundits believe
I don't want to shock too many people, but there are millions of people across Western Canada who have been for the most part been living their lives like this since being vaccinated.
Today's COVID briefing will be jarring to many. We are treating COVID at a public health level in B.C. like the flu or cold. If you are sick. Stay home. Most people can't get tested. If you are a close contact, you can live your life. You feel ok, live your life.

As someone who was involved with Wildrose from 2011 to unity, nearly every major policy reform Wildrose advanced while in opposition has now been accomplished with a balanced budget announced today. Something that may be lost in 2022, but worth reflecting on as conservatives.

I'm still of the camp that the gap was being narrowed again under Kenney, but there's no doubt that her win put the WIP vote and organization in shambles, and her dominant debate performance and closing sealed the majority IMO.
I fully expect the

crowd to be cantankerous this week calling Alberta some fringe outlier on COVID policy.
We're not. Democratic governors are ending mask mandates in large numbers. UK, Denmark, etc., have rolled back measures.

Yesterday, Alberta (rightly) announced a massive expansion of rapid tests and boosters with *minor* adjustments to the most restrictive personal gathering rules in the country so people could safely gather at Christmas
Here was some of the commentary.

That was honestly the best Canadian debate I’ve watched in my life.
Two tested candidates who know their material. 1 vs 1. Policy focused. And extremely well moderated by the consortium team.
A good day for democracy.
This is good, but the major piece we need to focus on as a country and NATO ally is how to get natural gas shipped to Europe. We lost two major LNG export facilities proposed in Quebec and Nova Scotia. How are we going to fix that to ensure long term energy security for Europe?
Had a great time on

panel last night. The NDP had a huge polling lead for more than a year, including just a few months ago. The UCP overcame that, put numbers on the board, and have a mandate to move forward. Congrats to

Squinting hard here to find words like “freeze bank accounts” and “compel towing operators into action” which were the major selling points of Emergencies Act by feds. Can’t find it. Quite frankly, having a hard time understanding what this “scandal” is.
Posting full letter from Alberta on Feb 5 requesting federal assistance in dealing with border protests.

wants to challenge the Emergencies Act in court. Lots of questions. Is EA required for this help? If not why need it? Or does this history EA?
