Since about 70% of autistic people have ADHD as well, it seems the predominant neurotype is actually AuDHD; autism without ADHD is a much rarer occurrence. This fact concerns me quite a bit with respect to the research literature.

I think this is the difference between autism and AuDHD. Autism: Need for routine and predictability ADHD: Need for novelty; shows more impulsivity AuDHD: Need for routine, but can change it It’s still really disruptive for me if plans get changed unexpectedly though.

Parents of autistic kids self-diagnosing is not worrying; autism is genetic, so if your child is autistic, there is a high probability you or your partner are autistic as well. And there is no need to pursue a formal diagnosis if you don’t think it will benefit you.

I mean, what are researchers actually exploring when they almost never control for ADHD as a variable and properly distinguish between autism and AuDHD? And what about the diagnostic criteria? What are the chances there isn’t some diagnostic conflation between autism and AuDHD?

It’s the same problem with alexithymia. 50–70% of autistic people have alexithymia, and we know that some aspects of alexithymia have been misattributed to autism because of the high co-occurrence.

I’m wondering something... Autistic burnout occurs when for an extended time, the demands put on you outweigh your resources and capabilities. So is “pathological demand avoidance” not just the consequence of autistic burnout?

To give an example: I tell a friend I will come by at 6 pm. But I end up procrastinating and show up at 6:30 pm. I’m okay with that. When roles are reversed, I’m okay with a friend showing up late; more time to myself! But if they show up early, it can feel quite disruptive.

If a friend shows up early, it conflicts with my plans, which can be quite upsetting. I was expecting you at 6 pm! You can’t show up at 5:45 pm! But if they’re late, I can adjust; I will just continue doing whatever I was doing before 6 pm.

Self-diagnosis is valid. Autistic people are autistic irrespective of whether a diagnostician declares it so. If you don’t need accommodations, access to specialized treatment, or insights you might gain through a formal diagnosis, self-diagnosis will be sufficient.

Anyone else still don’t know how to respond to people asking you how you’re doing as a greeting? In the Netherlands, if people ask how you’re doing, it’s always a genuine question. But here in Canada, I’m still not sure if I should say, “Good, thanks” or return the question.

As an autistic person, where do you fall on the spectrum of punctuality? Are you usually early, late, or exactly on time for your commitments?

@spacedoutsmiles I’m not actually sure; I go by what Natalie told me and haven’t checked the sources myself. But in the ‘PDA & Autism’ section of the article below, Debra references two papers that indicate an autism/ADHD co-occurrence of 59–61%.

Depression & suicidality aren’t inherent to autism. They’re the product of moving through a world that is unwelcoming, unaccommodating, and unsafe for autistic people. If you’ve made it this far—if you’re still here—we're proud of you.

It’s ironic, because a significant number of autistics pursue a career in (psycho)therapy and excel in the field. I think it’s quite aligned with our own journey of self-discovery. Plus, our high affective empathy and hyper-systemizing can be great assets as a therapist.

@ask_aubry I can’t count how many times I’ve been told I can’t be autistic because I used to be a therapist. I hate how pervasive the idea is that autistics can’t be empathic and that we have zero social skills.

A group of Somali medical professionals, autistic people, and parents in Minnesota have come together to create a term for autism in the Somali language. The term they coined is maangaar. 'Maan' which is mind, and 'gaar' which is unique. A unique mind!

I’ve never been able to flirt (or lacked the courage), but I was also bad at recognizing flirtation. Several times, I didn’t realize someone was flirting with me until years later. A badge saying, ‘Doesn’t pick up on flirtation; please be explicit’ would have been super useful.

For 32 years, I lived as Martin. That has been my name, but it’s not who I am. At 8, I started having fantasies about being female. Now finally on hormones, I have never felt happier and more like myself! So I want to officially introduce myself. Hello! My name is Eva. 🥰

Indeed, alexithymia works as a protective shield, cutting us off from our emotions to diminish our distress. But note that alexithymia develops through childhood trauma and dismissal. What was once a protection mechanism can become redundant and an obstacle in adulthood.

Alexithymia in #ActuallyAutistic humans might be more than just difficulty in identifying feelings; it could be a protective shield. Given the intensity of emotions we often experience, this could be our mind's way of buffering overwhelming sensations.

I don’t imagine I would like driving a car, no. Now 35 years old, I still haven’t attempted it; and I have no plans to. I rather walk, use public transport, or call an Uber. Both my parents and at least 2 of my siblings drive though. Anyone else who can’t imagine driving?

70% of autistic people have ADHD, but many may not know it (I only found out when I was 30 myself, compared to discovering I’m autistic when I was 19); so I think this contributes to some conflation between the two neurotypes as people generalize their own experiences to either.

On social media, I keep seeing typically autistic traits being attributed to ADHD. I find it really confusing as to me - an autistic ADHDer - they are very different. Can anyone explain this? /genuine question

@BecauseIMatter Yeah, I find it quite confusing with respect to ‘stimulation’. For instance, I stay up at night because the quiet & lack of light reduces sensory stimulation; yet I crave a lot of cognitive stimulation. E.g., I watch online videos at 125% speed because otherwise I get impatient.

Autistic people are at a higher risk of social manipulation. Combined with alexithymia, we become particularly vulnerable. Read more to find out how alexithymia can make us walk into the lion’s den.

Exactly. We need more quality information about autism, better diagnostic processes, and less stigma & stereotyping. To put it plainly, this is why we do what we do at Embrace Autism.

“If you were really autistic, you would have been diagnosed sooner”. No, because autism awareness is limited, the diagnostic criteria do not appreciate the breadth of autism, there are discrimination related barriers to diagnosis, and many autists mask their traits to survive.

Many Autists are “sensory seeking” meaning that we seek out sensory rich experiences. And yes, in line with the many paradoxes of Autism you can be both sensory seeking and become overwhelmed by too much sensory stimuli.

@v_novem I think ADHD accounts for this. My autism necessitates things being routine and predictable for me; but my ADHD contributes to my impulsivity, which allows me to change my plans along the way. It’s still really disruptive for me if plans get changed unexpectedly though.

@Autistic_Lia Not tired usually, but it doesn’t have much of an effect on me unless I drink a couple of cappuccinos along with taking my Concerta. I think the effect you’re describing can be attributed to ADHD/AuDHD, rather than autism itself.
