I was up on O Rourke’s Table this week picking bog cotton and came across the old dancing platform. I’m working on a new project promoting Leitrim. This is one of the magic places that will feature. Looking forward to lots of music & dancing with friends up here again some day 💛
We made a little video about delivering the St. Brigid’s crosses to our neighbours and the traditions around it.
It’s part of a bigger video and project by

As part of my work on the Markievicz Award I’m looking to speak with people from all over Ireland who were at houses dances, crossroads dances & dances in halls from roughly the 1930s - 60s period. Particularly those that might have stories from the impacts of the 1935 Dance🧵
We decided to stay at home in Ireland for our honeymoon and hit the road for 2 weeks in the VW. We had no plan other than to start in Donegal and travel the Wild Atlantic Way to Cork turn around and make our way back up again, stopping at any music festival or sessions we 🧵

Visitors to our county are horrified when they see these sites but to the locals this has just become the norm.
This is Leitrim being decimated by our governments forestry policy which is funded by the taxpayers.

Sickened to see an Irish presenter stand up and shake hands over such a comment.
Not to mention inviting a guest to talk about our national language and commenting "Have we got subtitles at some point?"

The same fields, townland, landscape, sunset, the same family of cows, new life, same view and time of year. The same consistent feeling of contentment in this moment since my childhood. The same feeling of knowing I’m in the right place and firmly rooted here. Home.🫶
This is infuriating! The ash dieback is evident in every hedgerow across Ireland. A disease brought here from imported ash trees by DAFM for the forestry industry. Now they’re importing hawthorns and once again a disease is killing our hedgerows and beautiful whitethorns.
What a special night for a community of seed growers and joy spreaders in Leitrim. The Mummers’ Parade tonight in Mohill. Thanks to everyone that join us!

I’m making a list of cures in Irish Folk Medicine to share with children at

culture camps this summer. Dockins for nettle stings, bread soda for sunburn, boiled whin bush flowers for sore throat, water gathered in a hollow stone for warts…have you any cures to share?
It’s tradition to celebrate around the bonefire tonight on the 23rd June. All you need to do is light a fire and gather your family & friends around it. Better again if you have musicians & dancers! It’s always one of the most special nights of the year. For me and my brothers🧵
It’s an honour to be chosen as a recipient of the Countess Markievicz Award.
Over the next year I’ll be researching the role of Irish women in dance in the first half of the 20th century & the impact of society, dancehalls & 1935 Dance Hall Act on them.

The tradition of mummers bringing good luck by calling into homes at Christmas has had to change this year because of the
#Covid19
pandemic. Musicians and dancers can go no further than the front door, but their message of good will is as strong as ever.
This is the 21st door in AMACH To The Field in the townland of Derreens. An Doirín - the little oak wood.
There’s nobody left here to tell the story of this townland as nobody can live here now. It’s 100% covered in conifer plantations. Derreens was once a thriving farming🧵

It’s easy to dance when you’ve got great music! Even if you are half dressed as a mummer, wearing your fathers old suit, have trousers falling down, your belly stuffed with a huge woolly jumper and boots a size too big for you…😂

The Mummers Project: We’re visiting the older generation in our communities in Leitrim again this week. Knocking on their doors and playing tunes outside, singing, dancing & just chatting. It means an awful lot to them(and us!) Maybe it’s something you could do in your community?
At midnight tonight don’t forget to open your back door to let out the old year and open your front door to welcome the new year in.
And then take down the door to have a dance on it!😆 Athbhliain faoi mhaise daoibh go léir ó Liatroma ⭐️

A fine Leitrim musician, character, storyteller and gentle soul has left us today but all he has given us in music, memories and friendship over the years will be forever cherished.
Rest in peace Ben Lennon. Ní bheidh a leithéid arís ann.
122 hectares of conifer plantation licences applied for Leitrim in January & February so far this year. That’s 81 Croke Parks with no life in any of them as townland after townland disappears. That’s adding to the 30,000 hectares already planted with no E.I.A every carried out.
A great start today with the Mummers across Leitrim and beyond. Thanks to the captain mummers for rounding up the troupes and everyone for all your energy, positivity and support. Many more days to go! 😄👍

Since the first lockdown of 2020 we’ve been calling to the doorsteps of elderly people across Leitrim bringing them some music, song, dance & company as the mummers. The project is back again for December and what a lovely surprise to have them arrive at my door tonight.

St. Swithin's Day today. If it rains today it’ll rain for forty days & forty nights!
It happened last year…and didn’t stop!☔️ My grandad Hughie was a firm believer in this day’s predictions. The sun is shining in Leitrim this morning. Come on child of Prague don’t let us down!🤞

It is March and the clear felling is relentless all across Leitrim. These huge areas being cut out will soon be planted with sitka spruce again and in 40 years time the next generation will still be dealing with this mess. What kind of legacy is this to leave?
@pippa_hackett
Today is May Eve! We travel the roads & fields picking the yellow May flowers from the hedges. Then we visit all the houses and sprinkle the flowers on their doorsteps. It keeps the fairies away as they like to cause lots of trouble at this time of year. We pick yellow flowers🧵
If you have to cut your lawn, then give these flowers a skip. The orange tip butterfly only lays their eggs on the cuckoo flower. You can see the tiny orange egg here. It’ll hatch in a few weeks and eat the flower. 🧡
100 years ago tonight, New Year’s Eve 1921, Jimmy Gralton first opened the dance hall in Effrinagh, Co. Leitrim and there was music and dancing into the new year. Tunes could be heard there again tonight to celebrate the event.

A little dose of innocent delight for Twitter today. My little girl got her first pair of dancing shoes yesterday. I think she hit the 120 decibels trying them on! 😆
The generation I grew up watching. I so miss them and their spontaneity. If you asked them would they call themselves dancers, they’d say no. Yet they’d be out dancing most nights!
