The concept of ancient invasions aligns with the view (which I've had since I was a grad student) that invasions - like extinctions & climate change - occurred long before humans, though human activities are now largely driving these phenomenon. Dr. Stigall explains it clearly.

What invasive species were changing communities.... over 400 million years ago? Dr. Alycia Stigall talks about this and her research in a recent interview with GEOgirl.

A potential link between global warming, drought, aerosol emissions and ocean blooms. Nutrient-rich dust from drought-stricken areas of southern Africa were carried to nutrient-limited waters and stimulated a phytoplankton bloom.

Some invasive species #scicomm in response to this question: If most invasions do not cause extinctions - and thus generally increase species richness in invaded areas, shouldn't people who care about #biodiversity consider that to be a desirable outcome?

In 2012, fertile grass carp were identified near the mouth of the Sandusky River on Lake Erie; in 2015, grass carp eggs were found in the river, indicating that some breeding populations had established themselves in parts of the Great Lakes.

Invasive zebra mussels can alter mercury concentrations in fish by altering fish foraging patterns and promoting microbial communities capable of methylating inorganic mercury. Fish tissue Hg is 72%–157% higher in lakes with zebra mussels. #invasivespecies
