Donegal-born Kay McNulty was known as the Irish ‘mother of computer programming’. She was one of six original programmers of the ENIAC, the world’s first electronic general-purpose computer - a huge step in technology - but her pioneering work was only acknowledged decades later.

Samuel Beckett, born #onthisday in 1906 in Dublin. Beckett was a brilliant playwright, but also led the most extraordinary of lives. He was an academic, a member of the French Resistance, Andre the Giant's chauffeur, & is the only Nobel Laureate to have played 1st class cricket.

Today we remember Grace Kelly, who died #onthisday in 1982. Kelly greatly valued her Irish roots, which go back to Drimurla, Co. Mayo. Her grandfather left the cottage that was his birthplace and home in 1887 and emigrated to Philadelphia.

Eileen Gray was born in Co. Wexford in 1878 but lived in Paris for most of her life. She became a lacquer master, modernist furniture designer and helped to pioneer the modern movement in architecture, never following the norm when it came to design. #IrishWomen

Irish Antarctic explorer Ernest Shackleton was born #onthisday in Co Kildare. He saved the crew of his ship – which had been sunk by ice in 1915 – by making a daring trip in an open boat over 750 miles of polar sea. It remains one of the greatest rescue stories of modern history.

On #WorldPilotsday , we look back on the life of record-setting aviator Lady Mary Heath - the first woman to hold a commercial flying licence. Limerick-born Heath was the first woman to parachute from an aeroplane, and once flew from Cape Town to London in an open-cockpit plane!
