I, for one, respect Melania's determination to screw up every inauguration day photograph by dressing like a Bene Gesserit Avon lady.

@masao_dahlgren I visited back in 2023, but didn't get box 8. The problem you'll run into is that Kataev's handwriting can be nigh-illegible.

I kind of suspect that Putin told Donald to think about regions that the US should supposedly control for national security reasons and now we're living through the results of that conversation.

Figured it might be another HGV test, given the trajectory.

@KomissarWhipla I see that the use of conventional weapons to achieve strategic effects also gets a mention.

I didn't want to be pouring over satellite images of Russia less than two days before my vacation, but here we are, I guess.

More news on Oreshnik: - There is already a stockpile of battle-ready missiles; - Not a modernization but an entirely new weapon; - Covers all of Europe; - To be operated by the Strategic Rocket Forces;

This isn't to say Oreshnik is based on either of these missiles, but rather that Russia has a large base of existing rocket motor designs to draw on. /end

The other possibility is the 15Zh66 Skorost. Developed in response to Pershing 2, Skorost was shorter-ranged than the existing SS-20 Saber/Pioneer IRBM, intended for deployment in the Warsaw Pact. Its flight time to targets in NATO would be much short than the SS-20.

Kuryer probably didn't use existing motors, as the system was considered exotic and development was "not smooth" per one source. A lot of equipment tests were done and experimental TELs were built. Full flight tests were scheduled to start in 1992, but the project was cancelled.

First is the 15Zh59 Kuryer (SS-X-26), one of the Soviet answers to the American Midgetman. Maximum diameter 1.36 meters, 11.2 meters long, launch mass of 15 tons. The warhead was small, given its intercontinental range and miniscule size.

If this is from last night's missiles, it could be part of a MIRV bus. The part on the left looks like the remains of a propulsion system.

Putin just gave a speech naming this as the "Oreshnik" intermediate-range ballistic missile with hypersonic non-nuclear payload, per Dmitry Stefanovich.

Ok, two reasons why I think Russia probably used a variant of the long-gestating RS-26 Rubezh IRBM: (1) Russia hinted that it resumed development of the RS-26 this summer and (2) that's what the Ukrainians predicated a day ago, down to the launch site.

Dear @KremlinRussia_E I appreciate you validating my career choice, but would prefer it if you did not do this A. On the territory of Ukraine and B. Less than a week before I go on vacation in Japan

New blog post: Russia is significantly expanding its solid-propellant production and development sites. The expansions are likely part of a larger push to increase missile production rates.

This is a much larger missile than the Hwasong-18. The -18 used a nine-axle transporter-erector-launcher (TEL), whereas the -19 uses an eleven-axle TEL (similar to the liquid propellant Hwasong-17).
