Duolingo's competitive advantages, in no particular order: 1) Data. Duolingo has the largest data pile specific to learning. Over 100 million lessons completed daily. Duolingo has been growing users +50% per year. 2) Software + AI. The special sauce of Duolingo is making learning fun. It's not a stroke of luck. Duolingo is always running 100s of experiments to find ways to a) improve learning, b) increase engagement, and c) better monetize. Duolingo is an early AI adopter, an early OpenAI partner, and a beneficiary of LLM technology. 3) Brand. Stronger than you think. Duolingo was just mentioned in an episode of Emily in Paris after being mentioned in the movie Barbie. This kind of free word-of-mouth advertising has been the norm. 4) Network Effects. Friends are "friending" each other on Duolingo and encouraging each other's learning. Teachers are using Duolingo in classrooms. Families are adding their kids in the Family Plan. 5) Efficient Scale. Having dominated the foreign language learning market, Duolingo is adding new verticals: Math, Music, Reading. 5) Luis von Ahn. The Founder/CEO is one of a kind. 6) Cost advantage. Being able to add customers with a great FREE product is tough to compete with. On Tim Ferriss's podcast years ago, von Ahn thought he could 10x revenue if he simply took away the free tier. But Duolingo is foregoing short-term profits so as to accomplish their long-term mission of making education available for all, which, in the end, will be the largest value creation play. Win-Win-Win. $DUOL

@KTmBoyle Important to distinguish suffering from pain. Enduring pain is crucial for growth. But you don't want to suffer.

Best bottom-up analysis of robotaxi economics πŸ‘‡ Highlights: 1) Cost to produce a robotaxi is HUGE. To be a winner in the driverless transportation economy, you have to master AI driving AND low cost production. 2) Cleaning is the 2nd biggest cost of operating a robotaxi. Surprising! 3) Cleaning + refurbishing costs are 5x the cost of insurance (paying for accidents).

@alojoh @Tesla_Evolution $20,000 = cost of production (a guess) 312,000 lifetime miles Thus ~$0.06/mile of the $0.20/mile cost of operation is the initial cost of production? You really think that was baked into the original $0.20/mile estimated cost of operation?

"If you can see the sky, you're connected." That's just brilliant. Half of the world has no internet or crappy internet. That's going to change fast. Starlink, which is pretty fast internet and will always get faster, is still undervalued by the market.

BREAKING: T-Mobile spent $8 million to air its Super Bowl commercial to announce that their @Starlink beta program will now be open to anyone on any wireless carrier for FREE until July. "There are over 500,000 square miles of the US unreachable by any cellphone tower; We've partnered with Starlink. We're inviting anyone on any wireless carrier to experience it for free."

It's not the learning content that's scarce, it's the learning structure and motivation that's scarce. Colleges add value by providing structured learning, peer pressure and peer assistance, professor assistance, and grade motivation. But no, we don't necessarily need college for that. AI is everyone's excellent assistant for everything. So that part of learning is getting solved. To learn, then, we need structure and motivation to go with the AI. This is a Duolingo tweet.

@cyantist If Tesla wanted to accelerate distribution of its (driverless) taxi service, why wouldn't it buy Lyft for 1/30th the cost?

Cage gets it. "I am a big believer in not letting robots dream for us." AI can sharpen and improve your work. It cannot tell you what your work is. Do not let it come between your mind and your soul. Do not let it interfere "with your authentic and honest expressions."
