Really cool study. Would love to see the same done for electrical microstimulation.
(1/4) A new paper @brainstimj challenges a foundational assumption in computational models of brain stimulation (neuromodulation/electrical stimulation). Rather than suggest prior predictions were wrong, this paper shows how the suitability of this foundational assumption can be evaluated in any application (FES, SCS, DBS, TMS, tDCS, tACS, ETC, TI...). So this will be interesting...

This mirrors my (unpublished) experience with multisite Neuropixel recordings in rats. However, I am undecided if it reflects the underlying reality of neural coding or our inability to know exactly what behavioral/environmental factors to correlate it with.
The majority of cells in the cerebral cortex are unspecialized, according to an unpublished analysis—and scientists need to take care in naming neurons, the researchers warn. By @holly_barker92

@bsauerbrei1 Fantastic book! Galison is an excellent writer. Wish more neuroscientists read it.

@DLBarack Much of the codes discussed today still fall within the range of possibilities that were conceived in the late 60s. To get a sense of that range, check out the NRP report on neural coding from 1968:

@VincentCostaPhd I hate that this has to be said. It’s shocking how much brilliant and inventive animal psychology work from the 50s - 80s is neglected.

Pretty cool! In a basic research lab setting it might be immediately useful for in vitro extracellular work. Love the built in uLED array (up to 16k!). But, limiting the number of simultaneously on uLEDs to just 23 seems limiting. Looking forward to that limit breaking.
We're launching a whole ecosystem of new things at Science! A WiFi 6-enabled acqusition system / headstage, a family of active probes, a standard API for neural interfaces, and more below:
