Did a fine tune last night of Mistral 7b on my 4090 using 4bit quantization and QLORA. This morning checking it's output against GPT4, and my team members can't tell which output came from mistral and what came from GPT4. Opensource isn't coming for LLM's... it's here.

SB1047 is basically a different bill every time I read it. It's now so vague I have no idea what is legal to release. The AG will decide if they think your model is bad. If they think it's bad they'll take you to court and if the judge also thinks it's bad you're a criminal.

@lan8ach It's hard for me to justify hiring juniors when seniors are delivering so much more bang for buck. Fundamentally, the ratio of senior dev to junior dev salaries needs to go up quite a bit for juniors to be desirable.

Imo, very likely Microsoft has maneuvered OpenAI into a position where the board faces losing control to Microsoft or running out of money and is upset that Sam let it happen. Very much doubt this is some kind of safetyist/doomer takeover.

@DanHendrycks In order to release the model you'll have reported to the government that you've taken reasonable precautions. If the AG and a judge later decide your precautions aren't reasonable you're cooked. The bill doesn't outline what precautions are expected.

AI has been used extensively in VFX for a decade. Most of the recent avatar movie was AI assisted. It's part of the job.

@pjk_software @Noahpinion No, in the US there is no escape of any kind from student loans. Not from low income, not from bankruptcy. You pay it off, or they can literally dock your pay. For some reason, student loans were allowed to be far more predatory than any other kind of loan in the US.

@migtissera Mistral 7b punches way above it's weight. I just finished a fine tune for a team that rejected 3.5 because it wasn't good enough. Was using GPT 4, but is now happy with a mistral fine tune. How well it's trained is a big deal.

Clean code is overrated. Try to keep it simple, get done what needs to be done in the most direct and easily understood way possible. Every time you think you're clever ask yourself, "Is this really helpful? Or am I just building a footgun for the next junior to come along?"

@BardOskar @emollick This wasnt ChatGPT, it's a different model. Also, the model is not designed to count letters in text, it doesn't see the same words you see and the words it sees are different lengths and use a totally different system of spelling than you do.
