2023 is nearly over - and what a year it's been.
At least I had plenty of
#ClimateChange
news to review in this year's roundup.
Some of the highlights are summarised in this 🧵, and you can watch the full review here:
Happy New Year! 💫
Global average sea surface
#temperatures
are at a record high. It shows that
#ClimateChange
isn't just affecting our lives on land, it's impacting our
#oceans
too.
While
#heatwaves
in Europe, Asia and North America are front of our minds, let's not forget that we've seen recent record-breaking heat in the
#Antarctic
and
#Arctic
too.
Speaking today on BBC News about why the
#polar
regions matter to all of us 🐧
@BAS_News
#Antarctica
is currently missing an area of ice bigger than Greenland. It's clear that we're seeing an extraordinary event unfolding.
So, you've seen the graphs: what do they mean?
Find out in our
@ConversationUK
article with
@CHolmesClimate
#Antarctic
sea ice is behaving very, very weirdly right now.
📉But... is it really lower than it's been in 7.5 million years??
Watch the full video to find out:
Approving new oil and gas licenses is absolutely NOT consistent with the 1.5°C warming we need "to secure a livable future for all".
The record-breaking events of 2023 will soon be ordinary if we keep burning fossil fuels.
#RoseBank
Climate change is going to increase the number of extreme weather events that we see broadly - like flooding, heatwaves and droughts. And climate change is increasing the impacts of these types of events.

Really grateful to be awarded the

It's a star-studded list of awardees this year 🏅 so I'm v proud to be on it

Getting very block-happy today:
✅Yes, climate change is happening,
❌no, scientists aren't making it up for personal gain,
🕵️and sorry to disappoint but I'm not a member of the new world order🙃
“We are not doing enough and we are not doing it fast enough and to relax our already lacklustre approach is going in exactly the opposite direction to where we need to be.”
@Dr_Gilbz

NEW
🛢️❤️🔥Comprehensive study confirms there is no space for new oil and gas if the world follows a 1.5C pathway
"new oil and gas is incompatible with 1.5C"
🌄🌬️Redirecting $570bn of new oil & gas investment could "fully fund" wind & solar for 1.5C

🌍 Global temps just hit 1.5°C above pre-industrial for 12 months in a row for the 1st time.
🌡️It's the hottest Jan on record & 8 months in a row have been hottest on rec.
👤WE'RE changing our climate & WE'RE feeling the impacts.
✅We have the solutions, we need to DO them.
Early start for me today to talk about
#IcebergA23a
, which is now on the move 🧊
Icebergs form naturally as part of the growth cycle of the ice sheet, but
#Antarctica
*is* feeling the effects of
#ClimateChange
, causing it to lose more ice as temperatures rise.
I'm striking because as an early career researcher my pension will be worth even less than the stipend I couldn't afford to live on during my PhD
#WhyImStriking
#UCUstrikes
Antarctic sea ice had a very dramatic year in 2023.
In this guest post for
@CarbonBrief
, I dive into some of the specifics.

It's been a hot topic for me - links to more stuff I've done about 2023's crazy southern sea ice conditions below
The science is clear: we need action on
#ClimateChange
NOW.
If you need a reminder of what's at stake, look at the headlines: deadly
#heatwaves
, plummeting sea ice,
#wildfires
, the hottest July on record...
Granting new oil & gas licenses is definitely not
#ClimateAction
Some of the consequences of
#ClimateChange
are baked in, but every tenth of a degree matters.
We still have the power to avoid some of the worst impacts.
That's why world leaders must increase ambition at
#COP28
and take dramatic and urgent
#ClimateAction
.
'He was undermining public consent in the policies we need to save the planet. I always worry about the tone, I don't want people to feel doomed.'
'The best time for action was 40 years ago but the next best time is today'
World leaders gather in Dubai for the Cop28 conference.
#Antarctic
sea ice is currently at a record June low.
Back in February, when it broke the summer minimum record, I made a video about what it means.
Seems like a good time to pull it out.

Speaking on
@AlJazeera
this evening about the recent
@NASA
/
@NOAA
results showing 2021 was the 6th warmest on record - the impacts of
#ClimateChange
are being felt here & now, and require urgent action to address.
📢2023 smashed so many records
🌡️1.48°C above pre-industrial
🔥First time temp anomalies reached 2°C
❄️Staggeringly low Antarctic sea ice
🌎Deadly extremes - wildfires, heatwaves, floods.
All have real impacts on people. Every tenth of a degree matters.
Was an absolute pleasure to talk to
@thejuicemedia
this week, even if the subject material (IPCC
#ClimateImpacts
report) was less than light-hearted.
If you don't know about Juice Media - you should! Give 'em a follow for some excellent satirical takes on important stuff.
As you know I'm a big believer in handing the mic to, and amplifying the voices of climate scientists, which is why my guest today is not one, but two climate scientists: NASA scientist Peter Kalmus aka

Ahead of
#COP28
, I spoke to the

@Dr_Gilbz
The current
#heatwave
is unlike anything we've seen before. And alarmingly, it's part of an accelerating trend.
#ClimateChange
forces up global temperatures and makes extreme events more frequent and potent.
I'm making a video explainer series about
#Climate
models.
What should I include? What do you wish you (or others) knew about how we make predictions about the future?
Confession: I'm a huge

This piece resonates a lot with me. There's little sustainable support for climate scientists to talk meaningfully with the public.
Most of us do it FOR FREE in our SPARE TIME and it's EXHAUSTING on top of a full time academic role.
But it's so important that we do it anyway.
Scientific institutions must create--and sustain--new kinds of roles so that researchers can provide the deep public engagement necessary to respond effectively to the escalating impacts of
#climate
change. The status quo isn't working. [Thread: 1/n]

Get ready for… a mega thread:
The science is clear: we MUST move quickly away from fossil fuels to secure a "safe and liveable climate for all"
(that's according to
@IPCC_CH
& climate scientists)
Opposing new UK oil & gas licenses is supported by evidence, as
@ed_hawkins
shows:
The disruptions caused by
@JustStop_Oil
protesters are frustrating for many. But their single demand – for no licenses for new UK coal, oil & gas projects – is consistent with the science underpinning the international agreements that the UK has signed.

Do you want to gain skills and hands-on experience working with real-world data that you can use to contribute to solving the

In case you missed it: my piece about the
#Thwaites
glacier.
Recent work shows the ice shelf that restrains the massive
#glacier
could be weakening. I wrote about what could happen if it collapses.
#ClimateChange
is "unequivocally" caused by human activities, and it's gonna get a whole lot worse if we don't do anything about it. My take on what the IPCC report says about the
#cryosphere
:
Today I've sweated through 9 interviews and 4 shirts.
I (and the UK) are not equipped to deal with this kind of

Yet another reminder that
#ClimateChange
is happening here and now.

if swift action is taken it can still "make a difference".
