Today is
#Fibbonacci
day. Thread about travesty of scientific credit sharing. Fibonnacci series was invented by Pingala many hundreds of years before Fibonnacci. Fibonnacci himself states that he translated the series. He called it ‘Indian Series’. Read the thread.
Today, the World celebrates
#Fibonacci
day.
"Fibonacci sequence is nature's code. It is in everything from flowers to storm systems to the shape of galaxies"- they said, crediting Mr. Fibonacci for this "discovery"
Yet, they failed to acknowledge their very source. Thread (1)
If you were born in India and are considering a Ph.D. in the USA, you should know this.
PhDs had a unique immigration advantage of getting an early green card in the EB1 category.
The EB1 green card category is 6 years backlogged now. That advantage is no longer there.
International PhD students, it’s great you are working for 5 years for that Nature paper.
Please also publish a bunch of peer-reviewed and review papers throughout your PhD.
You need papers and citations for immigration. Your stay in US is at stake.

I successfully defended my Ph.D. thesis today. Presenting, Dr. Shukla.
I thank all my mentors, family, and friends for the support. It feels freaking amazing.
Ma, its for you. 🙏
Sharing our paper recently published in
@nanoscale_rsc
. I developed a DNA based force sensor to measure forces of walking proteins with picoNewton accuracy. My first attempt to explain my science with a video!!!!!!
(Link to the paper here: )
If given a choice, where would you get hooded for your Ph.D.?
Me: Next to the custom fluorescent microscope where I spent most of my time during the Ph.D.
Thankful that I could do in person graduation after two years.

this fall as an assistant professor. I am excited beyond limits. This achievement is the culmination of momentous will, grit, and perseverance despite so many challenges. Shachi’s story will inspire many as it has inspired me. 1/n
I am soo excited to share that I will be joining
@UWChemE
as an Assistant professor this fall! A dream come true! This wouldn't have been possible without the guidance of my mentors and the sacrifices of my family (1/n).
“PhD is not a sprint, but a marathon”- True. But its not an endless marathon.
Don’t go on for 5 years without checkpoints.
Evaluate progress every 6 months. Double down on whats working. Iterate/pivot from things not working. Define milestones and try to hit them.
@PhDVoice
Really excited to share our work on the design of a high-throughput force sensor for molecular motors. Our sensor is capable of measuring the forces of individual molecular motors when multiple motors are driving a common cargo. 1/n
When I was doing PhD, all I cared about was my science.
After coming to corporate world, I realized how oblivious I was about US immigration.
US immigration system affects every international student. If you are one, you must be informed and prepare in advance.
#phdlife
@AbhiS_Case
I want this information to percolate to all PhD aspirants. First, you devote 5-7 years in PhD, then you get stuck in immigration system endlessly. Important consideration to make a decision about career path.
2021 came bearing gifts!
Thrilled to share our work on live-cell single-molecule imaging of CRISPR-Cas9 and TALE proteins in

Shachi is the first female from my hometown to be a professor at a US university. I am sure Shachi’s story and future work will inspire so many girls who dare to dream big. I am looking forward to seeing how her story unfolds. More power to you and Happy Birthday, Prof. Mittal.
Most PhD students aspire for a academic tenure track job. However, the number of academic jobs is way less than graduating PhDs and postdocs.
While working towards that TT job, also upskill yourself for industry jobs. Believe in yourself, but don’t ignore probability theory.
2024 H1B March lottery selection rate was ~14%.
As an international PhD student, you don’t deserve to be at the mercy of H1B lottery.
Plan in advance, to have enough papers and citations to get O-1 visa. Inform your advisor about your goals and plan accordingly.
@PhDVoice
Every grad student, irrespective of discipline, should do a few coding projects.
Reality is that coding is a sought after skill in industry of every domain. Also, more job options.
So after you finish that mol bio experiment, also code up the analysis pipeline.

O1 visa is the panacea of all immigration related maladies for every international PhD in US.
Getting O1 is tough. You must start preparing for it well in advance, during your PhD.
Stay tuned, I will do a detailed thread on how to prepare yourself for O1 visa.

This makes me very happy. Prof. H.C. Verma is not only an icon for engineering students, but also an inspiration for his work with underprivileged kids and school teachers. Very well deserved.
President Kovind presents Padma Shri to Dr Harish Chandra Verma for Science and Engineering. He is a physics educator and researcher, who is famous for his two-volume book "Concepts of Physics" which has revolutionised Physics education at school level.
Getting a green card for Indian born individuals, even highly extraordinary folks is a nightmare.
Tens of years of wait, 10s of thousands of $$ and hundreds of pages of paper work.
Dates are retrogressing even more now. Everyone must have a backup plan to stay in the US.
Huge personal news! My EB-1A Green Card for Extraordinary Ability was APPROVED today! 🇺🇸
After 12 contiguous yrs in the US, 18yrs in total, $20k+ in legal fees, a Denial, and 3.5yrs of working on this 900 page app, I'll finally be able to travel freely and.. be unemployed!
Attended the first zoom defense of my power collaborator and friend, Surbhi Jain

If you are an Indian, take a moment and think about this-
We are one of the 5-odd countries in the entire world which have developed covid vaccine within a year. Not just one vaccine, but two.
Think about how long have we come in last 30 years!
@Surgeon_General
Dear Dr. Murthy, please help India in this time of dire need. Please ask your admin to lift the ban on vaccine raw materials and help with oxygen supply. You have the power to influence decisions. Indians and Indian-americans will be forever grateful. 🙏
All of our (engineering graduates from India) successes are built upon the concepts taught by Prof. HC Verma. As I understand, he still is working to popularize physics among students and educators. An inspiration and guiding light for young scientists like me. Congratulations!
I am delighted to share that Prof. Harish Chandra Verma, our alumnus & retired Professor & now associated as a Adjunct faculty, has been awarded the Padma Shri. He epitomises outstanding teaching ethos of IITK

@AravSrinivas
And folks with PhD have a real disadvantage. PhDs apply for I140 after 5-7 years of PhD and postdoc, hence delayed priority dates. These managers get EB2 priority dates years earlier.
EB1 is the new EB2. Sad reality!
We lost my mom in 2019. Shachi held my hand and supported everyone in my family during these difficult times. Shachi’s journey is a story of a strong woman who supported everybody around her, held her head high, and kept working despite challenges. 4/n
Congratulations
@Ankur110490
for a new beginning. In our undergrad days, Gupta Ji used to teach fellow students, who were struggling, the concepts of Chem Engg. Not only a brilliant scientist, but an amazing human being. Excited to see his journey as a prof in upcoming years!
Thrilled to announce that I will be joining

Navratri (literal meaning is nine nights) is a hindu festival where we worship feminine deity Ma Durga for night days. Ma Durga represents 'SHAKTI', i.e. strength and light within.
Happy Navratri to all. 🙏
As the Hindu festival of Navratri begins, Jill and I send our best wishes to all those celebrating in the U.S. and around the world. May good once again triumph over evil — and usher in new beginnings and opportunity for all.
Within months of her accident, she flew to the US to start her Ph.D. We got married in 2017. Within a week of our wedding, my mother got diagnosed with ovarian cancer.
For months, she hopped to different hospitals and stood in lines for my mother's treatment. 3/n

One advise that I find valuable. When facing a big task, don’t think about the entire task. Just think about the first step and do it. Just do the intro slide and rest automatically follows. I use this technique in my long experiments. I make initial buffers and magic happens.

Sure. A PhD gets 3 years of OPT post graduation. After OPT, they need to get another visa for continuing working in US. H1B lotteries have become not viable. Now, for PhDs, go to visa is O1, which needs citations and publications.
@DrShuklaHere
One reason why I moved to the UK after my PhD in US. I got a Global Talent visa pretty quickly which is basically like a permanent residence in UK. I will get actual permanent residency after 3 years and UK passport another 2 years later, so total journey being 5 years.
@Sourish_SG
Everybody who does a PhD loves science, to varying degree. But when visa issues hamper your family life, ability to go to your home country, ability to work etc., it does have an effect on you.

Congratulations and all the best! Aah, transport phenomena. Prof. S.K. Gupta, 8 AM class in MS702. The class was so legendary that I even remember the room number after 12 years! :)
With existing force measurement assays, such as optical and magnetic tweezers, it is very challenging to reach a single motor resolution when multiple motors are attached to a single cargo/bead. Our assay is designed to overcome this challenge. 4/n

This is truly powerful. The biggest concern of the clients we are talking to is 'data privacy'. They really don't want their data to go to OpenAI or Google servers. Can't wait to test this out to see how accurate this is.
We can also estimate motor forces when motors are bypassing cellular roadblocks. We use artificial (20-100 nanometer beads) as well as physiological roadblocks (tau) to demonstrate the functionality of our assay. I hope our work will enhance the understanding of motor forces. 5/n
