Very proud to share this work in
@JAMANetworkOpen
- co-first author with my amazing PhD student
@StrombergAudrey
. We combined some of my work and her master’s thesis to look at the temporal dynamics between alcohol use, mood, and functioning in bipolar disorder. A 🧵(1/4)
😡 major manuscript rejection today. Second time this journal has rejected post review without option for revision when they are overwhelmingly positive reviews. Frustrated. 3 months down the drain.
Important to post the reality of rejections, not just good news!
Cats out of the bag...Thrilled to announce that I will be starting as an Assistant Professor at
@UMich
this fall! I will be building my lab in the incredible Prechter Bipolar Research Program,

What an amazing thing to wake up to. Our R01 focused on our PRIORI emotion recognition in bipolar disorder just got 8th percentile 😂 So proud of this team!!!!!!!
K23 submitted!!!!! No matter the outcome I am damn proud of this submission and am so grateful to everyone who helped me along the way to make Cycle I despite a rough start to 2022. Now…NO WORK ALLOWED THIS WEEKEND!
I am going to be a PhD mentor!! I have been dreaming of this since my first year of graduate school.
@KwapilLab
instilled a love for mentorship and was the perfect role model - I’m proud to continue his legacy. Can’t wait to introduce my first student to y’all - she is amazing!!!
The wait is over. I went from a 31 to a 24 on my K23! Not going to lie I wanted < 20 to feel extra confident but this is the number my PO told me I needed to get to so going to move forward with cautious optimism!
‼️ Exciting Announcement ‼️
I will be interviewing students for admission to the Clinical Science PhD Program
@UMich
for Fall 2022. Applicants should have a primary interest in bipolar disorder and will be a part of
@The_EmoTe_Lab

Thrilled to announce that my appointment as an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at
@UMich
is official! Excited to strengthen relationships between Psychiatry and Psychology and provide mentorship and supervision to Clinical Science PhD students!
After six months, I can say with 100% confidence that moving to Michigan was the right choice. I could not be in a better department with better colleagues, patients, research participants, and students. SO I put in an offer on a house today!!!!! Keep your fingers crossed!
Is this really happening? WHAT. My mPI R21 with Leslie Swanson just got a 4th percentile. WHAT. 4th and 8th percentile in one week. I think I might just quit now while I'm ahead. OMG. Thanks
@DepressionCntr
for our Breakthrough Innovation pilot for this project!
Over the moon to announce that my
@NIH_LRP

My first collaborative R01 got discussed! Not the score I was hoping for but choosing to be proud that it got discussed and excited about resubmitting!
‼️Excited to announce that I was awarded an mPI R21 with my wonderful collaborator Leslie Swanson! This study includes a novel combination of biological assays, an intervention, and digital phenotyping to identify mechanisms of circadian dysregulation in bipolar‼️
During my psych courses I've always wondered whether I was related to the famous psychobiologist, Roger Sperry, who discovered split brain. Today my ancestry account let me know I was!!!!!!!!!
Four manuscripts accepted in three weeks 🤯 Can’t wait to share “Variability in sleep is associated with trait-based and daily measures of bipolar psychopathology.” Used DSEM to model within person dynamics between sleep, affect, cognition and impulsivity! Stay tuned...
People often ask why bipolar? I read Kay Jamison's "An Unquiet Mind" then applied to McLeans Schizophrenia and Bipolar Disorder Program
@dost_ongur
. Yesterday (14 yrs later), I got to present my call to action to enhance psychological research and intervention in BD to Kay ‼️🤯‼️
So grateful to the
@DepressionCntr
for this award! Im excited to begin critical work examining the underlying mechanisms of emotion-based impulsivity in bipolar disorder using EEG and digital phenotyping!!!!
We are thrilled to award
@DrSarahSperry
the Eisenberg Scholar Award. Dr. Sperry's project seeks to use multimodal assessments to identify potential mechanisms of emotion-based impulsivity (EBI) in the lab and in daily life. Read the full announcement.
⭐️A dream come true ⭐️
90 minutes with Dr. Kay Jamison talking about the importance of psychotherapy in living well with bipolar disorder. So many takeaways, some undeniable: We need to inspire and train the next generation to feel confident and competent in delivering services!
Honored to be a consulting editor for Clinical Psychological Science 2021! Can't wait to help promote this years initiatives (interdisciplinary science, diversity and representativeness, and open science) under the amazing
@JnfrLTackett
!
Day 12: PCP sent me to the ER at 6pm to r/o pulmonary embolism from flying bc of my new sxs. Got to spend the night at
@umichmedicine
after blood tests were abnormal. Thankfully, no PE on CT - just ongoing Covid that is unrelenting. 🙏🏻 to my amazing nurses and docs. Now I sleep.
All the feels. My dissertation is officially in press at Emotion! See below for highlights!
Bipolar Spectrum Psychopathology is Associated with Altered Emotion Dynamics Across Multiple Timescales via
@OSFramework
Today, I lost my first fur baby. Tivi came into my life on my first day of graduate school and over the last 9 years has been there - PhD, internship, fellowship, first faculty job. She sat on my lap for my first manuscript, dissertation, grant. I am gutted. 💔
✴️Thrilled to welcome
@StrombergAudrey
to the
@The_EmoTe_Lab
as my first PhD student (and to twitter!)✴️ Audrey is an RA at
@MGHDautenCenter
and will continue to pursue research focused on how environment and context influence emotion and behavior dynamics in bipolar disorder!
It’s recruitment weekend for Clinical Science at
@UMich
!! I am so impressed and humbled by my applicants and have had so much fun getting to know them today! I have dreamed of becoming a mentor since my first year of graduate school and it’s finally happening!!!
Twitter out of office reply: Finally celebrating getting my PhD, graduating internship, graduating postdoc, and getting my first faculty position NOT ON ZOOM. Email response will be slow…I’m splashing about in Turks and Caicos.
🚨My mPI R21 with Helen Burgess was awarded today! We will examine the impact of light sensitivity (measured with post-illumination pupil response) on sleep, mood, and energy variability (measured with EMA and actigraphy) in bipolar disorder!!!
Thrilled that our paper, “Momentary dynamics of emotion-based impulsivity: exploring associations with dispositional measures of externalizing and internalizing psychopathology” was accepted at Journal of Abnormal Psych! Such an awesome collaboration with
@aidangcw
and
@bm_sharpe
Out of quarantine and HEADING HOME! Can’t wait to be in my own space with my pets. Oh to hug my dog. Getting through the airport took A LOT out of me. Omicron is no joke for those of us with autoimmune diseases. Let the recovery process continue.
Good luck to everyone waking up (or rising after a night of sleeplessness) for
#Match2022
#APPIC
!!! Today does not define your worth. You have worked incredibly hard to this point and that is what counts! You will persist no matter the outcome!
Home in my own bed, and, special thanks to the best mentor, collaborator, and friend
@IvyFTso1
for making sure I’m well fed. I can’t tell you how much it means to me how supportive and helpful my new academic family has been - Prechter and
#Michiganpsychiatry
THANK YOU!
I am thrilled to announce I've accepted a fellowship in the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Vanderbilt with an incredible team that is dedicated to understanding the development and progression of bipolar & psychosis. Thanks

My “I beat severe Covid and survived 3 moves in the Pandemic” gift. It has been my dream to have an XC60 for years and years. Meet Asta, “divine beauty” in Swedish, reminding me to look for what’s beautiful in life on days when everything seems grey.
After switching to an anti-inflammatory lifestyle (no ETOH, low carb, low sugar, low sodium, low fat) and the help of an amazing personal trainer, I just got a clean bill of health after a very scary dx in October when my autoimmune dx was wreaking havoc on my body. UGLY CRIES.
‼️ Interested in being our co-author? ‼️
@IMRaugh
and I are working on a methods paper reviewing analytical techniques for emotion EMA data. We have several datasets but also want to do simulations but don't have this expertise. DM if you'd be interested and you have this skill!
On our last day of vaca, got a call that my nana broke her hip. Her body and brain could not withstand surgery. After 3 days of post op delirium, afib, and pneumonia, she passed with my mom and uncle holding her hand. Hope you are reunited with all the golden retrievers. 💔
Excited to announce that I'm officially a member of
@HiTOP_system
! Looking forward to collaborating with a brilliant group dedicated to improving the classification of psychopathology & hope that my work contributes to our understanding of mania within this framework!
Incredibly honored to receive a 2024 ACNP Travel Award (senior) ‼️I’m excited to contribute to conversations about combining neuroscience methods and digital phenotyping to understand and treat psychopathology. See you in Phoenix!
@ACNPorg
@dpn_journal
Normalizing disappointment in academia. Today, was notified that the first internal grant I submitted with collaborators at U-M was not funded. Bummed but... onward and upwards!
Day 16 of Covid: I had enough energy to walk the dog .35 miles this morning! That may seem like nothing but considering I couldn’t walk him at all, THIS IS A WIN! Respiratory sxs much improved - waiting for headaches, sinuses, fatigue/brain fog to clear.
Well, I’ve got Covid. After 6 negative athome tests (with significant symptoms) this morning it came up positive. Went to urgent care and confirmed with their test. Will extend my stay and be quarantining in FL until Jan 2nd. Say a prayer my symptoms don’t get any worse 😵💫
Special moment. Got invited to present at the place where it all began,
@McLeanHospital
. I reflect to the day I showed up as an enthusiastic (terrified) undergrad RA not knowing that 11 years later I would have a PhD and my own research worth presenting! Thanks
@LauraGermine

🚨Excited to share our U01, Comprehensive Mobile Precision Approach for Scalable Solutions in Mental Health Treatment (COMPASS), was funded. Honored to be a Co-I and part of this incredible team that aims to leverage mobile and wearable tech to aid in precision psychiatry!
A $17.9M
@NIMHgov
grant will allow
@UMich
researchers to harness massive amounts of data to create decision aids that they hope will make it easier to predict which approaches will work best for individuals seeking mental health treatment.
It's that time of year again -
@NIH_LRP
's deadlines will be here before you know it! 100% recommend applying for this incredible mechanism. I am so incredibly grateful to
@NIMHgov
for making it possible for me to pursue a research career! Happy to talk/share resources!!!!!
Why don’t I do work on Thursday nights? Because I go to pottery. Every academic needs a hobby. This is my creative outlet and stress relief. I just finished my first bird feeder and am pretty damn proud!!!!
Excited to announce
@EcklandNate
and I's second accepted manuscript of the week. "Individual differences in emotion processing styles are differentially associated with affective dynamics" in press at Emotion! This was our first solo project sans mentors and we are very proud!!!!
Last day seeing clients on internship and just got this email from the Chair of the Dept. of Psychiatry regarding a mutual patient. What a wonderful way to go out....
Such a wonderful evening and Psych Tank event! Thank you to the
@DepressionCntr
for helping us breakthrough to improve bipolar disorder. Incredible finalists and talks. Our third place funding will make our pilot study on circadian interventions in BD possible!
Bravo
@umichmedicine
! They are offering 9 early-career clinical/translational scientists who are facing demands of caregiving during the pandemic $100,000 flexible funds to support their research and protect time. So glad I work at an institution that supports faculty like this!
Officially made it to Michigan and am settling into the townhouse. Unpacking in a much larger space takes so much longer than my 650 sq ft apartments of past! I can’t describe how amazing it feels to have a front door. Feels like we are making a real home!
A little welcome read for my first PhD student! Can’t wait to have us read this at same time and see how we can be better at measuring emotion in a culturally sensitive way!
The first paper from my
@BBRFoundation
Young Investigator Award is officially out in
@Nature
Mental Health! Read "Mood instability metrics to stratify individuals and measure outcomes in bipolar disorder" here:
A short 🧵 below:
Finally learned how to do IRT in R today! Quite terrifying to see how poorly some (>10) items perform on one of the most widely used scales in emotion science. Stay tuned for
@EcklandNate
and my attempt to improve the psychometrics of the scale. Pretty plots ☺️
Thanks to helpful reviewer comments,
@bm_sharpe
,
@aidangcw
, and I have a new and improved manuscript exploring within-person emotion-based impulsivity and its relation to internalizing and externalizing psychopathology (ala
@HiTOP_system
). Check it out!
Honored to have given my first grand rounds at UofM this AM - “mood instability as a stratification method and outcome measure for bipolar disorder”Our department of psychiatry is large - nice to have the opportunity to share my research with those who haven’t met me yet!
Been quiet about Twitter news dt grant deadlines. Twitter has been a wonderful outlet the last 3 yrs, a time when the Pandemic left me feeling isolated as an ECR. I learn about hot-off press research and I promote my students work. Not going to lie...I'm a bit devastated
Wow! 3 years ago today I made the decision to join
@UMich
. So grateful to what is now my amazing lab (EmoTe Lab), the Prechter Program,
@DepressionCntr
, the Dep of Psychiatry, the clinical science program
@um_psychology
for making my transition to faculty so wonderful

Yesterday I put all my energy towards being a decent therapist on a horrible day. Today, I’m full of rage and fear. Denying abortion rights in a country that has little support for parents (parental leave, accessible healthcare) is going to have drastic impacts on mental health.
