Trying to generate examples of recognizable “SciComm.” I’ve got David Suzuki, Bill Nye, NDT, Sid the Science Kid, Sesame Street, and no women. Any ideas of well known female SciComm folks?

Deep thinking: wouldn’t it be cool if academic conferences somehow engaged in service projects with the hosting community, connecting conference expertise with community-generated questions/opportunities?
A CGS-M is the *same* now as I got in 2005 ($17,500/year). My rent for a 1-bed. apartment was $750/month. Just looked up a similar unit, now $1800/month. I care about the future of science. We need to support graduate students if we want to recruit trainees.

Grateful to have attended a celebration of teaching & learning
@queensu
tonight, and especially humbled by this recognition. Teaching is a team sport. To have a lot of that team in the room tonight was truly awesome. Congrats to all winners! (Yes, my husband made it!)
It bothers me when a vocal minority spewing hate gets so much airtime. The majority of ppl I interact with are caring, supportive, & want what’s best for themselves & each other. Life is hard-we do it together. Give a care-filled person a shout out here. It’s okay, make it weird.
So, so honoured! So very grateful for my amazing colleagues and students who are all also represented in this award. Teaching is a team sport, and I truly have the most amazing team. Heartfelt thanks, and overwhelming excitement for all that’s to come!
Congratulations / félicitations à

My 6 y/o is really into machines right now, and she’s noticed that not many women are using machines on TV. Are you a woman who uses a machine in your work? Could you pop a picture of you using a machine below? (Any machine!)

Was talking to a stranger and we heard a bunch of sirens. I said “huh, I’ll pull up Make It Home.” The stranger nodded in agreement, knowing exactly what I meant. What a testament to positive, community-focused impact!

So grateful for all you do, and I understand that there are so many devils in details. Adding my voice as a donor supporting masking & hoping you can bring it back. If this is not possible, perhaps donation times dedicated to masked donors and providers? Masked donation bus?
Normalizing getting tested! I have what I think is a regular, run of the mill cold. The COVID self assessment told me to get tested, so I did! Really smooth process at the Beechgrove location, with extremely kind and friendly staff. Thank you

My kid was having a tough day recently, so I went to
@KFPL
to get some surprise books. Kid is really into graphic novels, and the librarian made amazing recommendations. Kid *lit up* with joy. This is a random library-love post. Thanks to y’all who bring such joy through reading!
Last night kid came to me “Mom, this morning at
@memorialmarket
, a woman dropped the juice she just bought. And the person who made it saw, and made her a new one.” 🥹 Sharing because this one act of kindness was seen by a kid, and hit hard.

Scholars across Canada are joining the Scholar Strike calling for racial justice and an end to anti-Black police violence and anti-Indigenous, colonial violence.

These trainees each became PhD psyc scientists thanks to gov. funding. We could eat, had okay apartments, & didn’t go into significant debt. That was almost 20 years ago. Costs are now way up but funding is the same. That’s what today is about

There’s a birthday in our house. A very amazing kid had their party cancelled for a second year in a row. So, we are starting the day with a hot sourdough cinnamon roll loaf ☀️ Big shout outs to the kiddos who are handling these losses with grace, courage, and sweets 😄
Just did the math: 3 years ago,

This is why I cringe-was an hour wait at the busy COVID testing centre yesterday, and my kid and I had to take off our KN95s in a crowded hallway to put on surgical masks that were way too big. I tightened, but didn’t see anyone else. Is the science wrong, or the policy?
I updated my mask classification system to make it even easier to read & understand including if using imported PPE. This system will simplify the understanding of what each type of mask offers to protect the wearer & those around them.

Delayed post: the next two weeks are the busiest weeks of my year. I forced myself to follow the research, and took a quick break. I’m always amazed at how much it helps. Check those colours! 😍 Sharing to promote folks taking breaks—*everyone* benefits. Leaders, you too!!
Came to campus for the first time since things shut down in March. I’m moving offices (which is great, I got to pick new paint!). Didn’t expect to feel all the feels. I’ll miss this little corner office. Catch me down the hall, y’all (...or on Teams...) 📚
My Twitter feed is filled with a lot of hate today. Posting this to share some kindness. I’m not sure who is behind hiding the ducks, but I keep hearing exclamations of joy from students, staff & faculty as more fowl are discovered. Grateful for these small and important moments!

1/ Ontario will keep the stay-at-home order until June 2nd.
As per Doug Ford "We can't rush to reopen".
This is the right approach - it will help us vaccinate significantly more people & have greater community-level immunity. It should also make this the last lockdown for ON.

I row, and it’s not the norm to wear a lifejacket rowing. I can swim, and I still wear an inflatable PFD even though it’s “weird.” I don’t wear the PFD for when I can swim. I wear it in case there is a time that I’m not able to.
