Yesterday, John McWhorter, a linguist who the NYT gives space to opine about racism, wrote an op-ed that declared the Columbia protests to be “abusive” to Jewish students, and placed the blame for that abuse on “anti-racist academic culture.” I have thoughts.🧵

Still remember: a guilty verdict is not justice. Putting Chauvin in prison is not justice. Justice would have been for George to never have died, to never been subjected to the violence of the state.

Only people who don’t understand math would think this is “adding needless work.” I do this in my head all the time. This teaches it explicitly. This is a foundation for how any kid can be great at math.

My sons math homework. I simply can’t roll my eyes enough. Why are we adding needless work instead of teaching simple math.

Again, the feelings of others are being privileged over the actual material realities on the ground. Let me be clear: antisemitism is a real thing and is as evil as anti-Black racism. And it is on the rise -- but not by the left, but the right.

Remember the point of the protest: Thirty four thousand Palestinians are dead. Over ten thousand children. Hundreds of thousands are starving. And an assault that threatens over one million people is impending.

That’s because MLK was a master technician on the minds of liberal Whites who care more about being late for work than Black peoples lives. He knew exactly who y’all are and the limits of your morality.

Fun fact: Martin Luther King Jr. opposed blocking roadways & transit paths indefinitely because he understood it was more likely to piss people off than convince them. This is an exercise in vanity, not activism.

We incentivize marriage & They want to make it harder for women to leave. All of this is about control. All women should find this terrifying.

I respect many many people who signed this letter. They have been mentors and supporters me, and I hope that can continue. But why are law profs — not just here, but nationally— so unwilling to say that calling the riot police on our students is simply wrong?

in stark contrast to letters from numerous departments at the university of virginia condemning the use of police violence against students last week, faculty at the law school have signed a letter supporting president jim ryan's decision to send in state police in riot gear

Intersectionality is structural, not individual. It interrogates how race, gender, class etc are mutually constitutive; you cannot understand the operation of any of them without understanding the super structure of subordination.

When Marxists say we reject intersectionality, we don’t mean we reject analyses that take into consideration race, gender, etc. What we mean is we don’t see these as separate issues that “intersect”, but as inseparable issues emerging from class society itself

I start teaching for the fall semester in 1 hour. 58 students for 3 hours every day this week. Every time I gear up for the first day of teaching, my stomach does back flips. I’ve won awards for teaching and am often asked to speak on teaching. But the first day is still scary.
