Would anyone be interested in writing a short-ish essay on Good Omens & the Bible (broadly speaking)? I’m extremely tempted to put together an edited volume...
Too bad about the anti-Jewish ‘slip’ uttered by the Doctor in Sunday’s ep. of
#DoctorWho
. Old Testament = death penalty; NT = love they neighbour? That false myth is irresponsible and dangerous. Also, Love Thy Neighbour is LITERALLY in Lev 19:18.
I’ve got the official letter now, so I guess I get to share a bright spot in a difficult semester—which is that I’ve earned promotion to Senior Lecturer as of 1 January 2020! 🎉🎉
Can I just brag for a minute and say that in the last two weeks not only have I completed a full subject, author, and ancient source index for my book, but I've also written *from scratch* a whole new 7000-word research paper?? 1 like = 1 pat on the head.
I am at a meeting in a pub with 30+ of my striking colleagues and students, working on a Manifesto for a Disruptive University. ✊ How many other gatherings of this kind are happening around the country right now?

thoughts from me. Namely, what I think is going on with that sushi scene in episode 1! What’s an angel doing eating human food?? 🍣
Dude, I am a Lecturer in Biblical Studies with a PhD in New Testament and Early Judaism. Don’t try to tell me what “the hole point” of my discipline is. Not only are you wrong, what you’ve said is anti-Jewish.
Capitalism needs babies to conform as early as possible to a post-industrial adult sleep schedule because it needs those adults to be productive workers. Turns out my baby is an anti-capitalist.
Pretty pleased with how our most recent quarantine project has turned out. Please welcome new human, Patrick Edmund Joseph Warren-Sallot, to this wild world.
So over the last week I’ve been reading and analyzing the manifesto attached to the white supremacist terrorist attack that killed 10 people in Buffalo. 1/14
I appreciate everyone sharing their difficult and often harrowing stories of being pregnant and wanting an abortion. Some of the circumstances are chilling. I also want to say that *not wanting to be pregnant* is a good enough reason to have an abortion.
You can add your name to this list of external examiner resignations, if you don’t feel like doing any more extra work in the service of an industry that doesn’t care about you.

You need a big public list of examiners who have resigned, this needs to be splashed all over the media, & it needs to become a controversy otherwise it's just a series of private resignations & nothng happens. Colleagues in depts. must not cooperate in fndng replacements
Hi! I’m a millennial! I’m also a Lecturer at the University if Sheffield, and have been for 3 years. Before that I did a funded post-doc at the University of Ottawa. Want to rethink that hot take made of garbage?
My comrades & I stood in the snow for hours to save our pensions so in addition to

board I think they shd all have to stand in the cold 4hrs every day for at least a week.
Question for university staff working from home. How much did you spend out of pocket to get your workspace to a level where you could do your job? Will you get reimbursed? Please indicate country.

PLEASE can people stop putting a definite article in front of “Jews”? I never see scholars of the New Testament say THE Christians but somehow it’s OK to say THE Jews, as if there’s some monolithic group with clear boundaries and aims?? Just stop.

As of this morning the
@goodreads
review of TTU which called for genocide has been taken down. The other antisemitic 5⭐️ reviews are still up. So I guess that is the extent of the action
@goodreads
intends to take.
Not a single hate-filled antisemitic review has been removed. I have replied asking what specific actions were taken by
@GoodReads
but they’ve made it clear they won’t be speaking to me further about this. 13/14
(If you search now you’ll notice you don’t get many high street shops anymore. I spent 2 days calling and emailing to ask that stores stop selling TTU and to their credit, almost everyone I’ve contacted has taken quick action.) 9/14
I’m giving a plenary paper for
@BNTsoc
next week and I’m super excited about it. It’s my first kind of “keynote” talk. It’s an honour! But also I’m nervous because in all likelihood I will have my 4 month old baby on me at some point during my talk.
I’m getting some responses from men about this tweet along the lines of “I already do this!!” Great. Now call out other men. Ask when you review articles for publication. Bring it up in book reviews. Train your students. Ask colleagues at conferences. Do the work.
Men: when you write papers, make sure you don’t just cite white men. If you only cite white men YOU ARE GUARANTEED to be missing a huge range of incisive and ground-breaking scholarship. Actually go through your citations and COUNT.
We are just 16 resignations shy of 200! 🎉 How can you help? Of course ReTweet, and what about sending an email to a couple of colleagues, or mentioning the campaign to people you run into on campus?

The book is called _The Talmud Unmasked: The Secret Rabbinical Teachings Concerning Christians_ by Pranaitis (hereafter: TTU). It was first published in the late 19th century. You can Google if you want to know more. This thread is about today. 7/14
I'm trying to keep up with all the External Examiner resignations to make sure people log them, but I know I'm missing some. If you know of people who've resigned, please tag me or just direct them to this list:

Frank W Beare Award for 2023, for our book Jewish and Christian Women in the Ancient Mediterranean! 🥳🥳🥳

and
@DrSaraParks
Article accepted for publication! 🎉🎉🎉 Stay tuned for "The Cup of God’s Wrath: Libation and Early Christian Meal Practice in Revelation," coming soon to a journal near you!
It’s 180 pages long & a difficult read. I’ve been looking for references to biblical texts in these kinds of manifestos as part of my work on Christian anti-Judaism, antisemitism, & Judeophobia. 2/14
@mbird12
@SBLsite
This is a bad take. You realize that it puts pregnant people’s lives in literal danger to meet in places with abortion and miscarriage care bans? This isn’t some symbolic thing.
It did have a long list of mostly spurious “quotations” purporting to be from the Talmud and other Jewish texts. Many of the titles were made up and didn’t refer to any actual Jewish text. 4/14
Others were excerpts taken so far out of context that their original meaning was completely inverted. Rabbis citing an example of what NOT to do are presented as if that’s what they advocate. 5/14

An important takeaway from
@DrSaraParks
‘a paper is ‘the Brooten phenomenon’—when a woman publishes important work which is *ignored for decades* by ‘malestream’ scholarship. Brooten’s work on the synagogue is *still* not integrated into current research on synagogue worship.
I emailed
@GoodReads
& was assured that they would look into it. This afternoon I got an email that said: “We have investigated this situation and taken appropriate action as needed. This will be our final email on the matter.” 12/14
Some of the texts were spelled strangely. This led me to discover a source for this vitriolic & inaccurate representation of Jewish texts. It’s spread beyond this text, but its widespread use is in part bc of how widely available this book is. 6/14
Hey Twitter, I'm looking to pay two someones to do a bit of research for me in the Church Fathers and in rabbinic lit. There are job posts for each on the University of Sheffield job website. If you search for "Latin" and "Hebrew" they should come up. Plz spread the word/apply!

The reviews on
@Goodreads
for TTU are over all very positive. By which I mean reviewers bought the lies Pranaitis was selling. Some comments actually call for genocide. Others quote other anti-Jewish conspiracy theories. There is only one critical review. 11/14
Were there Jews in Roman Britain? My latest article, "Invisibility, Erasure, and a Jewish Tombstone in Roman Britain," is available in pre-pub format in the Journal of Ancient Judaism.
The other hit you get if you Google is from
@GoodReads
, a social media platform for sharing book reviews & connecting to other readers. I’m not linking to the entry for TTU because it’s hateful. You can find it easily online. 10/14

I went for a run this morning following the direction of the river the other way. I stumbled upon this quiet and beautiful abandoned cemetery. Bluebells and ivy covered everything, bringing to life the carved flowers and leaves on the gravestones.
What is with some parents gleefully telling new parents just how terrible having a baby is? Would love it if people didn’t seem quite so excited about how difficult they imagine the coming weeks/months/years will be for me and my husband.
