You guys, I shot this last night on an iPhone 14 Pro 🤯 the level of dust detail is insane! And this is only a quick edit using the in built tools of the phone! Who said you need a DSLR to capture the Milky Way?!? Will be trying for more tonight!
Ok, I have to do a small thread about all the galaxies in that
#JWST
image - because if you turn up the brightness ... omg, they just POP out from everywhere. And as someone who's galaxies were mere blobs hidden in a sea of noise ... THIS IS AMAZING
Wednesday marks 50 years since the launch of Pioneer 10 - undoubtedly, one of the most important interplanetary space missions ever. This craft paved the way for all that have come since - Voyagers, Cassini, New Horizons, Juno...
Who wants a mega thread on Weds?!
Unbelievable. Phenomenal.
Can’t believe I saw the aurora rippling and moving with the naked eye from outside my front door, even with a street lamp 🤯 and what a light show by moving to a dark area a few streets down!
All this. On an iPhone 15. Unedited. Handheld and tripod.
How about instead of peddling this nonsense, invite some female ASTRONOMERS onto your show to tell everyone about the amazing work they are doing, and how they are breaking stereotypes and smashing down doors

Working outside academia is inevitable for most science PhDs. Yet in my experience, it's a path which isn't openly discussed during our studies, & brings a huge amount of shame and guilt - we're surrounded by those who stay.
Why isn't leaving ac discussed more?
@AcademicChatter
In the UK, of those who are awarded science PhDs:
30% obtain postdoctoral positions
4% find permanent academic research posts
Less than 0.5% reach the level of professor.

The images of the black hole give us an indication of the temperature of the material in the accretion disk around it ... some 6 BILLION KELVIN!
Or, 6 BILLION DEGREES CELSIUS, if you prefer. At this scale, the difference between the units is negligible...

#Mars
this week - a thread.
Tonight, a little after midnight BST, Mars is at opposition. This means, if you could, you could draw a line between the Sun, Earth and Mars. They are all perfectly lined up. (1/n)
Tonight there may be a very special astronomical event, poised for those in North and Central America, but possibly visible elsewhere.
We could have a meteor shower storm of the Tau Herculids, with 1400 meteors an hour!
Or nothing at all.
Or something in between...
Today’s the day folks, I’m off to Chile! I’m so excited now 😍 I’m actually getting to meet my bosses over at
@FifthStarLabs
in person for the first time! We’re heading to some beautiful dark southern skies, and hopping over to Bolivia too. I’ll be posting all about it!
The closer you look, the more these small blobs appear - and these are the really exciting ones, the oldest. But the very first stars and galaxies, they'll need more than 35 mins of staring to find. Imagine how full this will be with 10 days of staring into deep-space 🤯
In just two days time, most of Europe and parts of western Asia and central-northern Africa will bear witness to a rare celestial event - the Moon will pass in front of the ice giant planet Uranus. New in
@FifthStarLabs
, observing tips and the science of occultations!
OK, here's the answer to the question: did NASA just ruin the zodiac and invent a constellation?
Tldr: no, Ophiuchus has always been there, it was just ignored when the signs were drawn up 3000 years ago. And due to precession, it's all out by about one sign anyway...

Tens of thousands of galaxies
Just the viva and corrections to survive now 🤞❤️🌌
First up is this spiral boy near the bottom of the image. Look at that defined arm, with a definite flocculent disk around it. Hints of a second too! Is that a colliding neighbour to its right? And a foreground edge-on spiral to the left?
Astonishing -

is tightly focused and is performing as good, if not better, than originally hoped for!
The best bit? Nearly all those spots behind the focusing star are distant galaxies. Not stars. GALAXIES.
I can't WAIT for the science to get going 😍
Goodbye amateur astronomy.
Goodbye amateur astrophotography.
Goodbye ground-based professional astronomy.
Goodbye transient astronomy.
Goodbye radio astronomy.
Goodbye astronomy? Goodbye space exploration?

Galaxy cluster?
This looks VERY interesting. That bright galaxy to the middle-right is looking particularly DUSTY too - look at the dark shadows across the disk! At this wavelength, we're likely seeing very redshifted stellar light rather than dust emission.
However, beyond the

The time is coming when most stars will be artificial.
Managed to catch a few

tonight, so they are definitely visible, even if the count is reduced due to the full Moon - worth a look on the 12th/13th, for sure 😊
The two spirals at the bottom could be interacting, or along the same line-of-sight. But LOOK at those DEFINED SPIRAL ARMS 😍 it's important to not forget the small blobs too. Every blip here is a very distant galaxy, much older than those foreground ones.
Holy moly. I'm almost afraid to write this tweet in case I curse myself...

@BBCBreakfast
tomorrow morning at the end of the show talking James Webb Space Telescope 🤯 tune in to hear more about this revolutionary mission 🎉
Arecibo gave us so much, including:
- Determining that Mercury takes 59 days to rotate, not 88
- The first ever binary pulsar, and subsequently first indirect evidence of gravitational waves
- The first ever exoplanet in 1992
- The first ever repeating FRB
Thank you Arecibo ❤️😭
Science had a great lost, it’s a very sad day for the community & for Puerto Rico. The world’s very first single dish observatory, the

has collapsed this morning. Seeing 1 of our reporters break down live while getting the news just 😭😭
I cannot believe this but… I’ve officially seen aurora FROM WALES 😍🤯 what a fantastic evening of observing at

. Meteors, earthshine, a conjunction, clusters, nebulae, galaxies. Astonishing. Got to be one of the best nights ever. More tomorrow, sleep now!
Calling all astrophotographers 🌌
Have you captured any noctilucent clouds in 2024? I would love to include them in my NLCs article for

Yesterday we made a very special work trip to the incredible next-gen

observatory. I was stunned the entire trip 😍 its size is on another level, I just can’t wait for first light!
Astrophotography doesn't need expensive equipment. Here's a photo of the Moon I took just moment ago, with my phone held up to the eyepiece of my William Optics telescope.
You can see many craters along the terminator and the dark seas 😍 amazing!
DO YOU LIVE IN:
- Europe
- Iceland
- Greenland
- Western Russia
- Western Asia
- Northern Africa?
Then you might see an awesome astronomical event tomorrow morning! On Nov 9th, the Moon will pass in front of Venus - it’s happening in the daytime, but you can see it! 🫨
🧵
It's my imagination going wild, but doesn't this top-left galaxy look like a recent merger, with disturbed gas swirling behind the main galaxy? And that bottom galaxy is intriguing too - side-on disk, or face-on spiral with strong central bar?
PASS 🤯👏🥳 with (very) minor corrections!!
I don't have much else to say now other than thank you to

should appreciate this ;) (C) Detlef Hartmann
Here is a picture of a patch of sky easily hidden behind the eraser on the end of a pencil held at arm's length.
It contains thousands of faint dots.
Every one of those faint dots is a distant galaxy containing millions of stars. All invisible to our eyes.

Holy shitballs. This is astonishing footage from the Parker Solar Probe as its closest pass to the Sun yet.
It's very closest pass will be in 2025, when it will pass a little over 4 Sun-diameters away from the surface of the Sun 🤯
NASA's Parker Solar Probe plunged deep into the Sun's corona & passed directly through streamers of solar plasma. The view out the window was...staggering.
Who said you need fancy telescopes for astrophotography 🥰 handheld iPhone 14 Pro, auto night mode, point and shoot! So looking forward to learning more about how this camera works to really make the most of it!
So what's new this time?
- 23 cameras, including zoom AND we can make 3D images
- We're directly searching for signs of past microbial life
- New, stronger wheels (with JPL spelled out in morse code in the hole pattern!)
- Caching
- Experiments for human survival on Mars (1/n)

ASTRONOMY ADVENT CALENDAR
In this thread, I'll post a cool space fact every day for 24 days. Everything from the Solar System, to deep space, to space exploration.
Happy Holidays 🎄🎁🎊
It might happen again tonight! I cannot emphasise this enough - if it’s clear, about an hour after sunset, get out and look north 😍 to the naked eye, aurora often appear whitish or silvery. A few seconds exposure on your smartphone will show colour!
The Northern Lights lit up the sky across the UK last night after one of the biggest solar storms in years.
Astronomer Jennifer Millard says the display was as "intense as it can get" – but that the lights may be visible again tonight. Her advice? "Look north."
But, could all just be collected along the line of sight and not actually related. We need some spectroscopy to figure out how distant these galaxies are.
So many astronomical events happened at this
@TheAstroCamp
. I managed to capture earthshine through my
@Celestron
telescope, phone held to eyepiece! See how the night side of the Moon is faintly illuminated? That’s sunlight reflected off Earth hitting the Moon and bouncing back!
See them there green blobs?

Only 14 years late and $9.5 billion over budget 😜
But this telescope will be so worth the wait. As an extragalactic astrophysicist, the possibility of seeing the light from the very first stars makes my spine tingle. And the revelations on exoplanet atmospheres... 😍
Sad news: the world-famous Robin Hood tree at Sycamore Gap in Northumberland has been cut down in a mindless act of vandalism. The location is popular with astrophotographers and stargazers; it's a shame future generations will no longer enjoy it.

It's Earth 2.0!
Or is it? 🤔
Astronomers have found an almost Earth-sized planet which, at first glance, could have an average temperature right for liquid water - a lovely 42C!
BUT... that's with no atmosphere considered. And atmosphere is really important (1/4)
🪐 DISCOVERY 🔭
A Venus-sized exoplanet with an 'Earth-like temperature' has been spotted just 40 light-years away from us.
The potentially-habitable world, named Gliese 12 b, orbits its host star every 12.8 days and has an estimated surface temperature of 42°C (107°F).

Sky Guide app 🥰 I’m really enjoying my time here in Seattle, feeling very lucky to live the life I lead.
Remote work has its perks but it is also a joy to be back together as a team again!
Last night Uranus reached opposition. We tracked it over 4 hours to make this video showing the movement of the planet and its four brightest moons (Titania, Oberon, Umbriel and Ariel) against the stars.
The spiralling house prices in the UK make me think I'll never buy.
I'd rent, but I detest the idea of paying someone else's mortgage on their 5th, 10th, 20th house.
I have a bloody Astrophysics PhD, I should be able to buy myself a little house! 😡😤
What’s most fascinating is that this galaxy seems to have its light reddened by dust AND there’s oxygen present, indicating multiple generations of stars! After just 300 million years! Whaaaaat 🤯
Webb, you outdid yourself. 🏆
@NASAWebb
has found what appears to be the most distant known galaxy—beating its own previous record. This galaxy first formed less than 300 million years after the big bang.
I’ve picked up a bunch of new followers recently so HEY FOLKS 😍 I’m so glad to have you with my on my journey through life!

On this day (October 4th) in 1957, the Soviet Union launched Sputnik 1, the world's first artificial satellite, kicking off the Space Age.
Now there's around 6600 functioning satellites whizzing around our home planet, and over 2000 defunct ones. Crazy!

Good morning lovelies! This morning, I'm working on an article about the upcoming Leonid meteor shower. This year could be special, with a possible brief outburst of up to 250 shooting stars an hour!
It's only a possibility of course, but how exciting would that be! 😍
