My sweet mother went home to be with the Lord early this morning. She has been in hospice care for the last few weeks. My sister and I are grateful to the Lord for his grace and goodness. Mother was a godly woman who served the Lord all of her life.
I am delighted to announce that today I begin serving as the Distinguished Visiting Professor of Practical Theology and Dean of the Adrian Rogers Center for Preaching
@MABTS
! I will teach DMIN & PHD students this academic year and continue to grow PreachingCoach!
There is so much in this 2 minute clip of the great Alistair Begg I could wish every preacher would learn to emulate in their own preaching—Content, Creativity , Delivery, Pathos, Humor, Gestures, and more.
I have been associated with
@SWBTS
for 43 years—as a student, member of the Board of Trustees, and faculty member for the last 18 years. To suggest by innuendo or direct accusation that Marxism is somehow taught or tolerated
@SWBTS
is simply and patently false.
I’ll believe in limited atonement when: 1. You can show me one verse that teaches it. 2. You can tell me how it squares with John 3:16, and a dozen other verses. 3. You can explain to me why all the verses that say Christ died for the “world,” & “all” d/n mean what they say. . .
Pastors, as you preach Sunday remember two things: 1) Someone in your congregation may be hearing the gospel for the first time. 2) Someone else may be hearing it for the last time. Preach Jesus and call people to Christ who is himself offering salvation thru you to all who hear.
Overzealous Calvinists would do well to keep their caustic opinions about Dispensationalists to themselves during this time of great evil. Especially so w a hermeneutic of spiritualization that essentially entails making God a liar with respect to some of his promises to Israel.
50 years ago today, Nov 18, 1973, I went forward in the evening service at West Rome Baptist Church & told my pastor, Jerry Vines, that God was calling me to preach. I was 16. Beyond being a pastor, I never dreamed I would serve as a teacher of preachers as well. Thank you, Lord.
Young pastor in his first church bounded into the pulpit like a rock star, failed miserably in his sermon, humbled & crushed, walked out. An old deacon put his arm around his shoulder & said:”If you had walked in like you walked out, you would have walked out like you walked in.”
One of God‘s greatest servants, Dr. Junior Hill, has made his final journey to his heavenly home. I will be forever grateful for his influence on my life. His friendship and encouragement to me has meant so much for so many years. He is a great man of God.
“Total abstinence is easier than perfect moderation.”With respect to alcohol, 49 years of ministry since I was called to preach, and untold counseling sessions w moderate drinkers, this statement is absolutely true. I’ve never heard anyone say: “I wish I had taken a first drink.”
I once heard a preacher pray this before his sermon: “Lord, put your words in my mouth, & keep me from putting my words in your mouth.” I wish more preachers prayed this.
After 18 years at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary as Distinguished Professor of Preaching, my service will conclude July 31, 2022. This press release explains my departure.
Grateful to all Southern Baptists who did what we do best in this presidential election at the SBC: seeking the face of God, voting our conscience, and leaving the results to God. As Dean Inserra is reminding us in his sermon from Hebrews 12:1-3, let’s keep our eyes on Jesus!
“I have 4 good reasons for being an abstainer from alcohol: 1. My head is clearer. 2. My health is better. 3. My heart is lighter. 4. My purse is heavier.” Thomas Guthrie, most popular Scottish preacher of the 19th century. Guthrie quit drinking at the age of 38.
A young pastor bounded into the pulpit like a rock star to preach his first sermon. He failed miserably. Humbled, he slowly walked down. An old deacon put his arm around him & said:”If you had walked in the pulpit like you walked out, you would’ve walked out like you walked in.”
Congratulations to Dr. Mac Brunson on the successful defense of his PhD dissertation
@SWBTS

My author & editor copies of our latest book, “Calvinism: A Biblical & Theological Critique,” arrived this week! Watch for it Aug 1. 14 scholars offer a substantive critique of Calvinism. Those on either side of the theological aisle will find it informative, irenic, & helpful.
Here is the press release about my joining the faculty at Mid-America Baptist Theological Seminary as Distinguished Visiting Professor of Practical Theology and Dean of the Adrian Rogers Center for Biblical Preaching! .
Watch for it to hit the shelves soon! I’m excited about this one! This series is very helpful to the pastor/preacher. If you’re planning on preaching or teaching through Job, check it out!
6. You can explain to me how God can consistently desire the salvation of all people (1 Tim. 2:4-6) when he did not give Christ to die for the sins of all people. 7. You can explain to me why virtually no one in the church held to limited atonement before Theodore Beza in 1586.
Not many fathers get to walk their daughter down the aisle and give her away...then step up on the platform and conduct the wedding ceremony. Tonight I got to do just that for Melody...in Summerville, GA, at my mother’s house. Love you Melody!
Today I was announced as the new Interim Pastor at First Baptist Church, Sunnyvale, TX!
@SunnyvaleFBC
! I am excited to begin this journey with them. Pray for wisdom from on high as we walk together hand in hand with Jesus!
Headed to Memphis to meet the faculty, staff and students
@MABTS
! Teaching a DMIN & a PHD seminar this fall. Already thinking about initial planning for preaching events via the Adrian Rogers Center for Biblical Preaching! Stay tuned…
"My entire theology can be condensed into 4 words: Jesus died for me." Spurgeon. The Bible's entire theology condensed into four words: “Jesus died for all.”
Context is vital in preaching! Without knowing that there are 4 people at our table who are sharing this slab of ribs at Martin’s BBQ in Nashville, you might misinterpret the picture and conclude somebody’s a glutton! Consider all contextual information for accurate preaching!
4. You can explain to me how you can consistently offer salvation to someone for whom there is no atonement. 5. You can explain to me how God can consistently offer salvation to someone for whom there is no atonement. . .
Awakened this morning to a God still sovereign on His throne; a Savior still preeminent above all; and a Holy Spirit still indwelling and comforting His people.
I am often asked to recommend a good Systematic Theology from a Baptist perspective that is not Calvinistic. Here is my new go-to recommendation. More than 900 pages of solid material. Thank you
@HarwoodAdam
! Job well done!
Congratulations to Brad Whitt
@DBradWhitt
on the successful defense of his
@SWBTS
PhD dissertation on the subject of Adrian Rogers’ use of the public altar call in his preaching.

Before Super Bowl VI, the Dallas Cowboy’s star running back Duane Thomas was asked about playing in the ultimate game. His response: “If it's the ultimate game, how come they're playing it again next year?” Good reminder of what really matters in life...and what doesn’t.
Today begins my one-year sabbatical
@SWBTS
! Grateful to My president
@AdamGreenway
and Trustees. Looking forward to completing 3 writing projects over the next 12 months. Also, excited to launch a new ministry for pastors in September! Stay tuned. . . !
Pray for my friend,
@JimShaddix
, as he has a second cancer surgery today. Dr. Shaddix is one of the best expositors we have in the SBC. He is a top-notch professor of preaching as well.
When I am asked by preachers to recommend a preacher to listen to who consistently exhibits text-driven preaching, the first name I usually give them is Dr. Steven Smith.
The more I read about Job’s 3 friends, the more I have come to view them as something like discernment bloggers. They feel the necessity to point out to him what he himself seems blind to see, all the while hypocritically and blissfully unaware it is they who walk in darkness.
Thanks to all of you who lifted me up in prayer today as I preached my mother’s funeral. Thank you also for all the kind expressions of sympathy and encouragement. God’s grace is always sufficient!
Congratulations to
@jerryvines
upon his graduation today
@SWBTS
with his PhD in Preaching! Excellent dissertation on the rhetorical passion in Jude and preaching!
First print run of “Calvinism: A Biblical and Theological Critique” already sold out at B&H Academic! On the market only 12 days! Let’s double that next print run!

Some texts are tender invitations: “Come to me…and I will give you rest.” Some are calm and peaceful: “The Lord is my shepherd.” Some are a trumpet blast: “How long will you waver between two opinions...” Some bark like a drill Sergeant: “Repent!” Preach the text and the tone!
There is no atonement text in Scripture stating that God intends to save only the elect. There is no atonement text in Scripture stating that God wills only the salvation of the elect.
Preaching the first message of the Pastors’ Conference tonight at the SBC in New Orleans around 6:50 pm. Matthew 5:3. “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.” Pray for the Word to accomplish God’s purpose. And pray for the messenger.
Congratulations to Jeremy Morton, pastor of FBC Woodstock, GA, who successfully defended his
@SWBTS
DMin preaching dissertation today! Well done!
@dr_mckellar
and I were the examiners.
Job’s three friends remind me of some discernment bloggers and tweeters: They feel the necessity to point out to him what he himself seems blind to see, all the while hypocritically and blissfully unaware it is they who walk in darkness.
One of the best books on leadership is still that of J.. Oswald Sanders, “Spiritual Leadership,” first published in 1967. I would that every pastor read it.
Only Nat King Cole can sing “Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire.” Only Burl Ives can sing “Silver Bells.“ Only Karen Carpenter can sing “I’ll be Home for Christmas.” Only Andy Williams can sing “Its the Most Wonderful Time of the Year.”Only Bing Crosby can sing “White Christmas.“
Congratulations to
@deronjbiles
upon his recommendation today to be the new pastor
@SunnyvaleFBC
by the Pastor Search team! He will be preaching in view of a call on February 20th!
@MichaelCatt
@VanceHavner
He broke me of worrying about Sunday attendance in my first church in the early 1980s when I heard him exclaim: “Some of you are more worried about the absence of the people than the presence of the Lord.”
Some preachers don’t pray enough, and none pray too much. Never have I heard a preacher at the end of his ministry say: “I wish I had not prayed as much as I did.” But I have heard many say “I wish I had prayed more.”
“The preacher who has a grasp of church history in general and of the history of preaching in particular is not going to be shocked by the latest heresy or overawed by the latest victory.” Warren Wiersbe.
3.What we need is intervention from both the only establishment and movement that ultimately matters: God, who establishes all things, and a movement of the Holy Spirit in our midst.
Though it has been uttered by thousands of preachers, I used it once again in my sermon yesterday on the prodigal son: “ Sin will take you farther than you want to go, keep you longer than you want to stay, and cost you more than you want to pay.“
I preached when Obama was president. I preached when Trump was president. I will continue to preach when Biden is president. “Jesus Christ, the same yesterday, today, and forever.” Hebrews 13:8.
Beginning my 16th year of serving at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary!
@SWBTS
Thankful to God, Dr. Greenway, and Southern Baptists, for this opportunity!
Kate and I have met so many wonderful faculty, staff, and students today
@MABTS
. Amazing stories of how God is at work here! Thanks to President
@MichaelSpradlin
for your hospitality. Excited to see so many new students coming this fall! Happy to be the new kid on the block!
Kate and I are headed to Indy for the SBC! If you’re at the SBC, stop by the Mid-America Seminary booth
@MABTS
and the PreachingCoach booth
@preaching_coach
and say hello!
The atonement is complete. God’s offer of salvation is to all. When I come to Christ, it is not as if I fill out an application & God says: “Your application will be placed on file. We will see what we can do for you.” No! “Whosoever shall call ... shall be saved”
If asked my opinion regarding the length of a sermon, I would say this: “15 minutes is too short and 45 minutes is too long.” If I am asked my opinion regarding the length of *my* sermons, I would say this: “30 minutes is too short and 60 minutes is too long.” 😉
We welcome Dr. Ralph West, pastor of The Church Without Walls in Houston, into our PhD program in preaching
@SWBTS
!
@ralphdwest
is widely known as one of the premier preachers of our day! Honored to serve as his PhD supervisor. He’ll teach me more than I’ll teach him!
