The Department of Health and Human Services (HSS) removed from its website a recently released report which condemned private equity's involvement in healthcare. PE ownership of nursing homes results in an 11% increase in patient deaths. PE-owned healthcare facilities experience aggressive, dangerous staffing cuts. PE ownership reduces local competition, resulting in increased prices. In short, PE ownership harms you, the patient. Who is really benefiting from this administration's censoring of the truth?

@Cigna Thanks, but after 1 hour and 20 minutes, I was able to reach a "customer care advocate." Didn't get too far. I was told I *might* get a call back from peer to peer, but then again, maybe not. Perhaps the medical director who denied the MRI should take responsibility.

Pennsylvania has a new law limiting noncompete agreements for doctors and others to one year. Unfortunately, this law is watered-down and not in the public interest. The comment from the lawyer stating that non-competes prevent physicians from "just jumping back and forth for more money" is laughable. Physicians generally don't leave their jobs and their patients for more money. Usually there is a significant grievance against the employer or extenuating circumstances. At least PA decided to *something* about this issue, unlike NJ @ServingSJ via @phillyinquirer

Bloomberg article on how state legislators have failed to rein in private equity involvement in healthcare. How much longer will profits be more important than people?

@HildaMcevoy As a backup, a few narcotic pills are prescribed for severe pain. This is the first time I've seen a denial like this.

@HildaMcevoy Nowadays a lot is done, both in front of and behind the scenes, to lessen surgical pain using non-narcotic methods. Outpatient hysterectomy is very common in the US and most of my patients favor it.

@TexasPharmD @UHC It's easier to write Vicodin rather than N-acetyl-p-aminophenol and hydrocodone when the format limits you to 280 characters. Sort of writing Kleenex for facial tissue

@WesPowe55344003 @drcraigwax @UHC May have misunderstood. By the time the patient had severe pain and opened the bag of medications, it was in the middle of the night and the pharmacy was closed. Patient just had major surgery, so please give her a break.

@KyleP762 @UHC Not DEA's fault. I typically prescribe a few oxycodone after surgery and have never, ever seen this. Patient sensitive to oxycodone, though, and requested Vicodin. Not much difference, not worth the trouble of denying and asking for PA.
