Since it's still early enough in the year for me to actually keep track of this, I'm gonna take a cue from some friends, and do my own completed media thread for 2024. We'll see how this looks at the end of the year
"Anime is a billion dollar industry and you need to pay your engineers, translators, and actors appropriately, instead of continuing to shortchange them"
Seto Kaiba changed KaibaCorp from a military weapons contractor to a card game company because he hated the former, opened theme parks for children and depending on continuity, either made sustainable clean energy or at least space tech that actually works. Musk could never
Sick of folks comparing Elon Musk to Seto Kaiba.
Kaiba actually made technology for the world to enjoy and which had a lasting impact on the general public.
Since there's absolutely no way to convey how incredibly awful this sequence looks through screenshots alone, here's a full clip for your viewing "pleasure".
(For the love of god someone stop, GoHands)
Knives Out: Don't trust the rich because no matter their politics they will always unitw to protect their own class interests
Glass Onion: Fuck E*on Mu*k specifically. What a moron
ONE PIECE's Netflix Live-Action Season 2 is teasing a 'Chopper-like silhouette' next to the character casting in Weekly Shonen Jump Issue

.
Series would be scheduled to premiere in 2025.
I blame the weird revisionist history that's surrounded it ever since FMA Brotherhood got popular. FMA 03' was critically well recieved, and popular enough that there were regular debates over whether the anime or manga storylines were better, but once Brotherhood became a
Has any classic anime been treated as poorly by the companies that made it like the 2003 version of Fullmetal Alchemist. It sold tens of thousands of copies per unit in japan, won the 2003 Anime Grand Prix and Aniplex treats it like complete shit.
I've watched the first episode of YuYu Hakusho at least 8 or 9 times, and Chris Sabat's delivery during this scene always gets me
(Jokes aside it really speaks to the skill of an actor when they can act dramatically while doing an otherwise goofy cartoon voice)
As much as I like FMA Brotherhood , I am tired of it being held up as the platonic ideal of an anime adaptation simply because it came off the heels of a "less faithful" version by people who have largely never read manga because then you'd know that outside of its (1/2)
So I've said nothing about the show itself, but even just a few minutes in, it's REALLY apparent the GoHands aesthetic is not doing it any favors. This seems like a pretty low stakes romcom that would need a cuter or more bubbly artstyle and animation than...whatever this is
So I saw it pointed out last night that there aren't nearly enough black VAs involved in anime, and I agree there should definently be a lot more in major roles, but in the meantime, there's also a lot of cool black VAs who were or still are involved in the industry who aren't
Instead of supporting Palworld stealing designs and touting AI shit, if jaded Pokemon fans are in the market for a good alternative, play the Digimon Cybersleuth games. They're basically Digimon meets Persona and they're a fantastic pair of RPGs with a lot of what Pokemon offers
Yo
@Crunchyroll
this kind of shit isn't okay. There's no reason to screw over non-subscriber users like this. Especially now that you're the biggest game in town. Stuff like this is what ACTUALLY helps to encourage more piracy
Much as it sucks that the most obnoxious types of weebs might take this as a victory/sign to harass staff more to get their way, more than anything else, it shows how much the MAPPA meat grinder has killed that studio's ability to retain talent.
This has happened TWICE now
Chainsaw Man Director, Ryu Nakayama has started his own studio. People have speculated that he may follow Park's footsteps and indeed. The studio's name is Andraft described as creative unit on company's site. Their first work is VSPO x Vanguard collab PV
I gotta say the Netflix release of Glass Onion is stupidly well timed given the entire M*sk Twitter saga proving exactly how stupid he really is. I'm amazed how well Rian Johnson could see into the future and I hope he keeps getting to make Knives Out movies as long as possible
Man it's funny seeing so many replies jump to the defense of the old dub when you know damn well those same people would be going "evil localizers" at a modern dub doing the same
thing, anime fans started treating the 03' anime like some kind of laugahable mistake simply because the Brotherhood anime followed the manga more faithfully (despite making some adaptational choices that kind of make it inferior to both it's manga counterpart and the
animation quality, Brotherhood is kind of medicore as a direct adaptation and its need to strip the manga's plot down to its bare essentials to fit into 65 episodes, meant it had to gloss over a lot of the smaller philosophical elements or drama that made the manga so great (2/2)
03' anime as a standalone piece of television in some respects). I do think Brotherhood is a very solid show and all but it is kind of annoying that "how well does this follow the manga?" is the metric by which a lot of anime fans judge the quality of a show
Remember the days where one of the reasons everyone thought anime was cool was specifically because it had queer stuff that would never fly in the west?
We have strayed too far from our roots
most people in the west had probably never heard of FMA until the 03' anime and got into it that way. Not to mention that Arakawa herself encouraged BONES to do their own thing, and some of the later parts of the manga were pretty clearly influenced by FMA 03's success)
(I say "less faithful" in quotation marks because the way people act about FMA 03' now you'd think it only existed because a bunch of FMA manga fans were hungry for an adaptation and BONES just gave them something to hold them over until Arakawa finished the manga when
even just because of the manga's continued popularity at the time. It almost certainly had to do with the 03' anime being stupid successful and Aniplex wanting to keep that gravy train rolling. In a way I guess that kind of foreshadowed the modern trend of anime reboots ,
In the race to create more AAA open world games, JRPGs have been critically overlooked as a source of inspiration because a lot them excel in creating a lived in world in ways that some of these AAA games have barely even come close to
PS: One last thing to note is that it's probably worth acknowledging that the Brotherhood anime likely did not happen because Arakawa was unhappy with how the 03' anime turned out (by all accounts she encouraged the staff to do their own thing from the get go) or
Last thing I'll probably mention about this premiere is that while it is nowhere near as bad as say, Akebi's Sailor Uniform in that area, the photorealism being used here does make the show look mildly skeevier than it was (probably?) intended to
although I do wonder how much better Brotherhood could have been had they held off on making it for like another 3 years, so they wouldn't have to rush through the early material simply because it had been adapted recently enough that people would remember it
@Wilson98544307
@joshuadavdking
I don't think that's really the statement being made here so much as a lot of shonen authors are so bad at writing women or giving them things to do, a lot of the core male relationships in these series come off as more homoerotic than was probably intended
Also ya know with how much FMA:B is propped up as the ideal adapation you'd think it'd mean the manga would be held in the same regard over here, but if anything, Brotherhood has probably encouraged most westerns to check out the manga LESS because of how "faithful" it is
I'd been holding on to this thought for a while but in light of this topic, I'd like to say to say that despite what the battle shonen fans might tell you, this is the REAL modern Big 3 of Shonen Jump and I won't hear anything to the contrary
I figured anime staff shortages were a common enough problem that a lot of fans know it's a matter of time not money, but most of the replies here are legit people blaming TPCi for "being cheap" with the anime as though that's the problem and not the anime industry being on fire
OLM animation director confirms the Pokémon anime is in trouble
After all the recent issues with the Pokémon anime (filler, gap weeks, recap episodes) a staff member has confirmed that they don't have enough people.
This may be why we haven't heard anything about a Gen 9 anime.
Extra special shout-out to Zeno Robinson
@childishgamzeno
He's been making a lot of waves lately and he's played such characters as Prince Kelby in Canon Busters, Hawks in My Hero Academia, and most recently, Goh in Pokemon Journeys
Was gonna leave it alone but since I saw enough folks asking: the Akebi dig was less that show looks bad (absolutely doesn't) and more that the animation was perhaps a bit too detailed for its own good when framing things like a girl changing into a uniform or sniffing their toes
First is Dani Chambers
@SkiniMini07
She's done a lot of work at Funimation and she's played such characters as Chise from The Ancient Magus' Bride, Dahlia Hawthorne in Ace Attorney, and Kokoro from Smile Down the Runway
I maintain my stance that a lot of the actors, directors and other staff at 4Kids were just kinda doing whatever they could with the hand they were dealt with and some decent work came from their efforts but Al Kahn is fucking awful and it sucks he still has money
Next is
@JalenKCassell
You've probably heard him a lot on Toonami recently, and he's played such characters as Okuyasu from Diamond is Unbreakable, Vanilla Ice in Stardust Crusaders, and Archer of Black in Fate/Apocrypha
The Spiderverse movies should be seen as proof that audiences here will show up for animated films that are treated like regular movies instead of something to relegate to the kiddie pool
What the ACTUAL takeaway will be is anyone's guess
@GabeKunda
also does a lot of work over at Funimation and you can hear him as Bem in the 2019 reboot of BEM, Tenma Hikage in Hinomaru Sumo and Rock Lock in My Hero Academia
@laura_stahl
is an actress more people should be keeping their eyes on and she's played such characters as Ray from The Promised Neverland, Aiger Akabane from Beyblade Burst Turbo and most recently, Iruma from Welcome to Demon School, Iruma-kun
@JohnEricBentley
does a lot of voice work in LA and has played such characters as Nathan Seymour/Fire Emblem from Tiger & Bunny, Tiger's Eye from Sailor Moon SuperS and most recently Barrett in the Final Fantasy 7 Remake
Gina Bowes has a lot of work in California and has played such characters as Mairu Orihara from Durarara, Kiyal from Gurren Lagann and Tsunoda from Aggretsuko
Rebeka Thomas
@rebekastuff
has done some stuff at Bang Zoom in California and you can hear her as Krone in The Promised Neverland and Flora in Carole and Tuesday
While Xiaolin Showdown is trending, let's not forget part of why the original series worked was trolling you into thinking Omi was the protagonist when it was really Raimundo all along and Xiaolin Chronicles sucked because it immediately retconned that
And of course this thread wouldn't be complete without mentioning the legendary
@BeauBillingslea
who's played such characters as the Raikage in Naruto, Ogremon in Digimon Adventure, and of course Jet Black in Cowboy Bebop, among many other roles
Even putting aside the obvious of there being way too much disposable isekai, I was chatting with some friends on Discord about the fall season yesterday and how it's so stuffed with sequels that there's currently only two new shows of note so far and both are
I still have two meetings to go this AX, but so far my takeaways are...
1. Anime content bubble is probably gonna burst soon, way too many shows and nobody can handle it, not fans nor industry
2. Anime merch sales have fallen off a cliff, especially figures
Everyone's kinda 😐
Jovan Jackson does a lot of work at Sentai Filmworks, and you might have heard him as Nyanta in Log Horizon and Musa in the recently released dub for Run With the Wind
While it's the only role of hers I could find at Funimation, Sametria Ewunes
@Sametria
played Atsuko and Michiko and Hatchin, and she was pretty phenominal
@MarkAllenJr
has done work for Funimation and Bang Zoom and has played such characters as Ren Koha in Magi: The Kingdom of Magic, and Makino in The Ones Within
Hey
@Crunchyroll
if you're trying to get rid of remote recording so you don't have to pay LA talent at union rates, we've got our eyes on you. Pay your actors what they're worth
Also while he's more of a voice director than an actor, I also want to give a shout out to
@shannondreed
If you've been enjoying the new Saint Seiya dub on Netflix, he co-directed that, and he's also done voice direction on dubs like Chihayafuru, Tsurune and Run With the Wind
@akronwatson
did some work over at Funimation and I'm not sure if he still does VO work these days, but he's played such characters as Satoshi in Michiko and Hatchin, Wilee in Jormungand and Psycho P in One Piece: Heart of Gold
Gonna say this now: I know fans are probably gonna go bonkers when Fire Force inevitably gets taken off the air (whether for a few weeks or definently) but please try to have empathy for those who lost loved ones in the KyoAni fire. That show's imagery and subject matter is
nearly enough attention so I wanna give a shout out to some of them as well as where you can hear some of their work. This is gonna be a long thread and odds are I'll miss more than a few names so if anyone wants to contribute, feel free
#BlackLivesMatter
Boy I sure am getting a lot of replies to this where people either miss basic sarcasm or claiming mentions of eternally relevant social issues is just window dressing for giant robots (the latter worries me considerably)
Using your clout as an author after a successful series to resurrect one of your previously axed works is some big Chad energy
(Genuinely surprised a few Shonen JUMP authors never tried their hand at this, but I guess it would be next to impossible to do over there)
"Golden Kamui" creator Satoru Noda will start a reboot of his Hokkaido set ice hockey sports manga "Supinamarada!" in Weekly Young Jump magazine
The original series was axed after 6 volumes back in 2012
Team Rocket starting a radio show with Brock as a regular listener who thinks Jessie sounds hot without knowing who he's listening to is the kind of galaxy brain joke I could only dream of
#anipoke
And now ye mortals, prepare thine selves for what is quite possibly the single most utterly terrifying display of
@BenjaminDiskin
's vocal range
#YearOfDigimon
@MOfHealy
To be fair the direct cause was the influence of evil deities but the explosion that birthed the class divide wouldn't have happened without his tech yeah (granted no one from GX or DM is in 5Ds so for all we know the cast of both series died in that incident. Kaiba included)
Oh so uh...this is a thing I did I guess
Thanks to
@ANN_Lynzee
and
@gabbomatic
for the opportunity and for everyone who contributed to the original thread
LRT: Frankly instead of sitting here asking for kids anime to be made more "adult" we should be asking for more kids anime to get dubbed so kids can actually watch them because even the ones that get simulcast often aren't
@LittleBitofJean
They are but I feel like that narrative is a bit disingenious because the 03' anime was pretty much intended to be it's own thing from the manga and deviated from it WAY earlier than everyone keeps thinking it did
He's also started directing some anime dubs too such as Welcome to Demon School, Iruma-kun, and a few episodes of Ascendance of a Bookworm, which you can find on Crunchyroll
Good on Kyle McCarley for trying to help negotiate SAG Aftra contracts for future CR dubs at his own expense but it sucks Crunchy wants to keep playing hardball
Safe to say if
@Crunchyroll
isn't willing to negotiate I'm not watching whatever replacement dub we get for Mob s3
In regards to a certain orange anime company saying they wouldn't raise subscription prices after getting rid of one of their streaming services only to turn around and do that a month later
It is simultaneously amazing and disturbing how well Ayashimon has captured the thought process of why so many people enjoy battle manga and also how buying too much into the world view those present can be horrifying
LRT: Respect to Ben Diskin for standing his ground after seeing what happened with Kyle McCarley but it does suck knowing
@Crunchyroll
could have avoided this with
