Cowboy Bebop co-writer Dai Sato announced on Facebook that prolific scriptwriter Keiko Nobumoto passed away on December 1 due to esophageal cancer. She was 57 years old. Nobumoto gave us Tokyo Godfathers, Cowboy Bebop, Wolf's Rain and so many more.
I condemn Kadokawa Honyaku's choice to publish this transphobic, hateful rhetoric. Japan's progress to acknowledge transgender and x-gender people, including revoking its eugenic-like law of forced sterilization, should be celebrated after years of discrimination and pain.
Hajime Isayama's favorite moment in the entire series was "Sasha and Connie continuously call each other idiots, but they're both actual idiots, they were fun to draw"
Not explored in the manga, he says Hange reminds him of a friend from his hometown, named Hayato. They are both very weird. It was normal how strange they were, and was an inspiration for the character.
"... when I wascarrying these heavy feelings I was in a rut for a long time and got to talk to fans individually and they praised my work and those words hit me and this opportunity to come visit my fans was a great experience for me."
A final message for his fans today: "one of the things I was to excited is the gratitude to the fans, especially when I wrapped up the story. I was having a difficult time digesting this."
Kyle was even willing to work on the show's new season as non-union if Crunchyroll would meet with the SAG-AFTRA and hammer out a contract for future productions. Just a good-faith negotiation meeting to see what happens.
"It seems like something they don't want to do."
If you use Crunchyroll, you may be entitled to a settlement from a class action lawsuit. The lawsuit was for CR "disclosing its subscribers’ personally identifiable information to third parties without consent in violation of the Video Privacy Protection Act."

This situation is a culmination of continued anti-union culture in anime dubbing. Not surprising, anime voice work is vastly underpaid compared to its American cartoon counterpart. You can read more about it in ANN's two features here:
Holy shit they found more plagiarism with the Tokyo Babylon 2021 production and due to "lack of trust" with GoHands, they are restarting with a new production committee.
Anime NYC attendees, before you get scared please remember:
The vaccines are effective against the Omicron variant which has shown to be more easily transmissible but with milder symptoms if vaccinated.
Get tested, get boosted.
According to Sato, she passed away on December 1 and a family-only funeral service was held on December 4. Director Shinichiro Watanabe was contacted about her passing and Sato and Watanabe have been in contact about how to relay this information.
In the latest episode of Chainsaw Man, there's a short scene of a news program that is...darkly funny.
The ticker mentions the U.S. Senate "almost" passing gun control. Because even when there's a literal "Gun Devil," we still can't get a bill through Congress.

Sato added that he knew Nobumoto's health was deteriorating when she was hospitalized earlier this year but didn't want to admit it. His last memory of her is joking around.
I hope all of Nobumoto's colleagues and family can get through this difficult time. RIP.
ANN's editorial department will always be a place welcoming to all LGBTQI+ people. It is my goal, first and foremost, as its executive editor, to foster an environment that respects all our writers' lived experiences.
The Crunchyroll merger has created the largest and most powerful anime company outside of Japan. Yet, pay rates for dubbing are among the lowest in the acting business, and the problem is even worse in anime.
LRT: There are a lot of reasons to include a free, ad-supported version when it comes to anime compared to other streaming services. One is legitimately offer an alternative to pirates (who are never going to pay) and the other is for demographic reasons.
UPDATE: Crunchyroll revealed to ANN that there will be no effect on Nozomi Entertainment's licenses, such as for Macross, and projects such as Right Stuf and Nozomi Entertainment's Kickstarted Blu-ray Disc release for Dirty Pair will continue as planned.

TODAY on ANN: I got to interview the creator of Ranking of Kings about his unique salaryman to manga artist story. His parents still have no idea he quit his old job.
I take no pleasure in reporting this. Unfortunately, the chairman of Anime Dallas was exposed to a person who tested positive to COVID-19 one week prior to the event. CDC recommended guidelines were not followed prior to his attendance.
Good morning.
I still have my job.
I still have the same boss.
He somehow managed to convince a very large corporation that I should be able to continue doing what I do at my discretion.
I continue to gain power at the detriment of the internet. ❤
Toriyama's works were foundational for my generation's early fandom. The Toonami block got us with DBZ and Sailor Moon. One of my best friends in middle school's chuuni phase went by the name "Kat" as a femme reference to Kakarot.
Why do I have to make a publishing decision on a Monday about whether to write about Vic Mignogna flashing his underwear to an all-female panel on a live stream?
"What we humans, who seek political correctness in expression, are ultimately aiming for is a stable state where people naturally respect each other without political considerations. I believe that my generation is naturally developing in this way…
This one touches on it more along with the sometimes internal hostilities between Texas-based (a right to work state) and Los Angeles/NYC-based dub actors.
I have made the few people I'm directly in contact with aware of this. Kadokawa Honyaku's editorial department has no overlap with ANN; Kadokawa itself is a massive conglomerate.
Instead, the 10-episode adaptation blends spot-on callbacks of moments from the anime with both subtle and substantial narrative changes — most noticeably around the show’s women, that allow the series to stand on its own.

why I continue to not subscribe to the NYT. How can you call yourself a fashion critic and not know that it's an invite event and the money goes to charity? (She knows)
Hopefully, our voices and support of civil rights groups in Japan can show why this discriminatory and hateful language has no place in a just society.
Let trans people live in peace, in success, and happiness as their authentic selves.
The only reason WIRED was able to get this info was because 4chan was investigated by NY state after the Black-targeted mass shooting at a grocery store in Buffalo. The killer was an avid user of the site and posted his manifesto and video footage there.
Reminder that GoHands lost a contract to adapt CLAMP's Tokyo Babylon because they were caught copying character designs wholesale from Volks and a music group.
Allegedly, Good Smile is trying to disentangle themselves because Disney is set to axe its partnership with them over it. It's not like the site was DIFFERENT at the time of investment, though.
It's upsetting how much of queer history in Hollywood is hidden unless you go looking for it. I feel like we should all know the director of Frankenstein and The Invisible Man was openly gay. In the 1930s.
Absolutely saw multiple "I'm not bothering to vote then" last night and what a fucking privilege that is.
In case you forgot ICE is still empowered and systemically disappearing and killing kids.
Trans rights are gone. I wish I was being sensationalist.
Sort your priorities
Both Crunchyroll and Funimation are increasing their subscription costs, albeit in different territories. Funimation is going from US$99.99 per year to US$149.99. Unsure if Funimation's increase affects all subscribers.
The author of My Lesbian Experience with Loneliness and My Solo Exchange Diary has a new essay manga out. I hope she's doing ok. This one deals with her hospitalization due to alcohol-induced pancreatitis & fatty liver last year.
There's been a lot of great discussion regarding this manga in
@alltsun_nodere
's review on ANN. Really recommend picking it up if you or someone you care about is neurodivergent or if you work with kids.
I'll keep this separate from the resources thread but I just want to say one thing. As parents, we do not get to "choose" our children. But we are required to love them. They are only here by our own choice and the very least we can do is love them as whole, unique people.
When a piece of media is no longer enjoyable to you, you can stop watching it any time. You can critique its execution of difficult topics.
Call me when you have to fucking divorce a video game, jfc.
Encountering something you don't like or even something triggering in media is not a violation of "consent." It's a frankly gross bastardization of language to act as if that's the case.
Crunchyroll has added a little more clarification about this:
" Crunchyroll reached out to ANN with a comment stating that episodes of anime prior to this spring season will still be available to watch for free with ads. " (1/2)
Voice actors Kyle McCarley and David Errigo Jr,. discuss the hurdles of unionization with colleagues from the VFX and gaming industry, including how Crunchyroll squashed a potential union contract for Fena: Pirate Princess.
This guy harasses our writers every week and is a pretty key example of why I don't interact with fandom of anything. It's not unique to one show or even anime.
The previous ruling only agreed to have Mignogna pay for approximately half of Rial and Toye's attorney costs; that will be reevaluated for potentially more.
