Dr. Shaffrey immensely cared about the @UVAneurosurg program and, importantly, the residents. We are all shocked by this news, but we will strive to keep his legacy of "doing the right thing by the patients." Very sad day for the UVA nsgy family.
The AANS is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Dr. Mark Edwin Shaffrey, David Weaver Professor and Chair of Neurosurgery at the University of Virginia. Renowned for his groundbreaking contributions to neuro-oncology, founding the Neuro-Oncology Center and advancing spine research through the Quality Outcomes Database (QOD), Dr. Shaffrey’s legacy includes over 150 publications, numerous awards and pivotal roles in clinical research. A decorated military neurosurgeon and esteemed contributor to AANS, @NREFORG and @TheJNS, Dr. Shaffrey made an indelible impact through his dedication to mentorship, education and collaboration. To honor his legacy and lifelong dedication to neurosurgery, the NREF has established the Dr. Mark E. Shaffrey Memorial Fund to continue his commitment to advancing neurosurgical science and improving patient care. Our deepest condolences go out to his family, friends, colleagues and the University of Virginia community. His extraordinary contributions will continue to inspire future generations. @UVAneurosurg @uvahealthnews

@DrDiGiorgio Definitely agree with all points. Autonomy as a neurosurgery resident has also drastically decreased compared to years back. Adding more residents/fellows would make this even worse and dilute case complexity among surgical residents. The answer is not an easy one.
