@timothycbates @JohnArnoldFndtn You're in Edinburgh, Scotland. You've got no expertise in how the administrative part of sponsored research operates in the United States.

@seanluomdphd @ladonnapietra @DayLabUAB Are you really this clueless? You remind of several faculty members I had to remind it's not THEIR money that's being spent, it's the university's. Nor is any equipment purchased THEIR property, it's property of the university.

@seanluomdphd @ladonnapietra @DayLabUAB The chair does NOT spend the indirects, the institution does. Clearly you've got no clue what the role of SR compliance is.

@seanluomdphd @ladonnapietra @DayLabUAB Wow, you've been PI on a few research grants and now you're an expert on Sponsored Research? How arrogant of you. Our pre-award & post-award staff monitor THOUSANDS of awards annually.

@seanluomdphd @ladonnapietra @DayLabUAB You realize EVERY SINGLE grant PO request is reviewed by SR 1st? If it doesn't comply, it's rejected. As it should, since the university expends its $$ and then gets reimbursed. Stop telling me how we do our jobs in SR. Llpppp

@seanluomdphd @ladonnapietra @DayLabUAB Uh, no. We made a department eat a few grand & the VP refused to allow SRAD to pay for it.

@jaypgreene @ATabarrok We've never had HHS dramatically reduce our requested rate. They may take off a few percentage points, but not cut it in half.

@seanluomdphd @ladonnapietra @DayLabUAB They do. I've personally talked to dept heads to inform them that the department will be eating said costs.

@jaypgreene @ATabarrok That's not how negotiating works. And frankly, it's a breach of contact law to unilaterally do so.

@seanluomdphd @ladonnapietra @DayLabUAB Seriously? I've had federal auditors in my office. They can reject reimbursements to the institution...and we get to eat them. And then our VP picks up the phone and has a serious conversation with a dean. Faculty have removed as PIs for shit like this.

@seanluomdphd @ladonnapietra @DayLabUAB The compliance office in Sponsored Research made sure they do.

@ATabarrok @jaypgreene I need to current this. "Indirects" don't directly fund startup grants for new faculty. SRAD $$, at the discretion of the VP for Research in agreement with a college dean, may be redistributed back to the college or awards made directly by SR from SRAD $$.

@jaypgreene @ATabarrok *beats her head up against the wall* That indirect rate is NEGOTIATED. With the university's cognizant agency, i.e., the federal agency the institution receives most of its awards from. We have to put a comprehensive package together that justifies the rate we are requesting.

@ATabarrok I'm going to disagree with you on replacing the broken centrifuge. Another budget source would pay to replace it...and not necessarily SRAD. It could be the department or college's budget, foundation discretionary funds for the benefit of the college/department.

@seanluomdphd @ladonnapietra @DayLabUAB No it can't. NIH can't arbitrarily change the rules. Furthermore, GAAP defines what direct & indirect project costs are.

@seanluomdphd @DayLabUAB No they can't. A-21 prohibits that. And this is why researchers like you have people like me in sponsored research reviewing your proposal.

@ScotsFyre @TKillmore @JonathanFoulds @NIH I'm well aware of what indirect costs are. How many research proposals have you reviewed for compliance? I typically had 10-15 on my desk. Indirect costs aren't perks. Clearly you don't know anything about accounting either, radio talk show co-host. Go pound sand

@ScotsFyre And? Just so happens I'm a former sponsored research administrator at a major research university. And you are?
