They are, but that's not grammatical gender.
Take Old English phrase "Se bāt" (the boat) as an example, here "Bāt" is masculine, so you use the masculine definite article "se".
But in "Sēo giefu" (the gift), the word "Giefu" is feminine, so you use the definite article "sēo".

People don't call ships "she" because they're feminine nouns (cuz even in Old English they'd be masculine), it's more a cultural thing cuz boats and ships have often been personified as feminine figures, not actually grammatical gender.
