@JasonRCantor @thebioKIMist This is an awesome study Jason. I think subcelluoar control of various metabolic pathways is super interesting. Further, how various metabolic enzymes engage (or not) with the mitochondria needs to be further elucidated.

While I’m biased, this was one of the best meetings I’ve attended. Congrats to the scholarship recipients who shared incredible science with us!

Def funny, a little bit sad. But now all i can think about are huge colonies of myostatin KO mice running on thousands of tiny turbines.

Top 10 ways American Science can survive the 15% indirect cap: 1.Breed special transgenic mice that can run for days in tiny hamster wheel turbines to keep lights on 2.Get athletic program staff to donate 1% of their salaries to research thus raising 100 billion dollars a year.

@reallyclicking @bimald I'll also add that the nomenclature for indirect costs at the NIH is kind of misleading. An indirect rate of 60% is 60% of the DIRECT costs, not the total grant. So if you write a grant to cover 100k of direct research costs, the uni gets a check for 160k. 60/160 = 37.5%

@rg62650 @Acyn Not true. This is a cut, not rebudgeting - money 'saved' from capping indirects does not go to direct costs. It is being clawed back. 60% is being thrown around but that's an NIH term that is a misnomer. 60% of the DIRECT costs get added. End result is ~35% of the TOTAL grant.

@aaronmring Totally agree. Even Elon himself screwed it up when he first tweeted about it. The NIH nomenclature issue alone probably got us into the mess.

Brief apolitical tirade now more scientists are back on twitter. Can we PLEASE stop touting how many cells we've sequenced by scRNAseq in our results sections? It adds nothing to the paper, and comes off as virtue signaling for something done by a kit/core.

Super important point! While NIH funding certainly propels science, it also is essentially the only way scientists are trained! This also includes folks that enter science adjacent careers like consulting and venture.

Many in biotech/private sector are boasting about their ways of funding and doing science But they are staffed with PhDs and postdocs we train in our @NIH and @NSF funded labs in universities With uni labs lacking funds to train, the private sector will be profoundly harmed
