Now that the ink has dried and I’ve bought swag, happy to announce that F2024 I’ll be joining UCLA as an assistant professor in sociology!
The journey has been real & I’m overjoyed that things are falling into place.
“Big girl job” loading, now just have to finish this PhD 🤗
My emotions feel too big for words. 6 years in a PhD program, but really 27 years in the making. I’M OFFICIALLY A DOCTOR … 🥹 every part of me (first-gen, black woman, person living w lupus, person in a family impacted by the criminal legal system,etc.). I’m SO HAPPY
A bright spot in otherwise difficult times:
I received UT’s top dissertation award. The topic is as sociological as it is personal, so this recognition means the world. It’s an indescribable feeling to transform a troubling familial experience into something beautiful 🦋
It’s meeee … in a pamphlet/issue **insert all sorts of feelings here** grateful to
@ASCRM41
and the committee who selected me from what I imagine was a stellar pool. Excited to meet my fellow recipients and others at the conference 😎
My first feature/“grandparent-friendly” write-up of my dissertation research and what sociology and this academic journey has meant to me so far 🥹🥹

NEW PAPER ❗️With a network approach we find what race and discrimination-health scholars have said for decades - discrimination makes people feel bad, not the other way around ! We also find that those bad feelings linger in a specific set of emotions.
If the article felt “TLDR”, you can listen to and watch 🙈 my advisor and I discuss some key ways that people at the margins collectively survive
@FacultiNet
And just like that, my whole summer is made. ☺️ Not only is this topic dear to my heart, but it was a collaborative project with a peer I admire. Thank you for engaging with our work
I was honored to chair the committee that chose the ASA
@SocCrimeLawDev
best graduate student paper this year. We are excited to recognize

(honorable mention). Congratulations! 1/5
Submitted my first academic articles this week 😎. Decided that my happiness won’t be contingent on the R’s (revise & resubmit or reject) because whatever happens, it’ll be a first and I’m proud. That being said, time to celebrate 🥳🙌🏿
Feeling grateful for a wonderful writing retreat with brilliant scholars and even better friends. We are building our way to a new kind of academia! ❤️
Erin ☺️☺️ l have been eagerly waiting to retweet this!!!
Having a front-row seat to your dedication, your clarity around what you value and want, and your faith has been truly incredible
So happy for you! Professor cohort 2024 unite 💚
After many years on the market, I cannot believe that I get to say that I'll be an Assistant Professor of Criminology, Law, and Society at
@gmucriminology
next year! I'm super excited to join a department with lots of brilliant and kind people.
oh wow... MA thesis finally published!! All about the mental burden of college debt for enrolled Black and Latinx students.
Best part was receiving a "first pub" gift from my grandparents. Now let's see if I can get them to read it 😅
❗️⬇️ NEW PUB❗️Seeing this one in print is therapeutic. The research question: We know that black women have played vital roles in other peoples’ encounters with police, but how do they protect THEMSELVES from the risk of police violence ?
Our (
@afmessamore
) PODCAST has arrived!!!
Love the central messages/findings of this paper and love collaborating!
Social Psychology Quarterly - A Network Approach to Assessing the Relationship between Discrimination and Daily Emotion Dynamics

Sociologist studying how carcerality and finance work in tandem to entangle families within the carceral system, and in some instances, implicate them in its operation.
Woke up in Baltimore. 4 hours later I’m in New York City. Im baffled. The gigantic size of Texas has really messed up my geographic perception 🤷🏾♀️🤷🏾♀️
1.Find enduring relevance of mutual aid (kin and friend) networks
2.Advocate for joint focus on making ends meet and coping with violence
3.Identify patronage/clientelist networks and popular protest as complementary problem solving strategies
Some days I find myself lacking the understanding my family deserves for not inquiring about grad school (gs), or a project I’m excited about, or an occurrence that troubled me.. then I remember just how far removed gs is & how even I struggle to explain its peculiarities
So witnessing, as deployed by BW in their everyday lives, is a pathway to visibility, an act of resistance, and a resource for future justice-seeking processes
The ongoing preparations for police encounters that Black women make take a toll on mental health, while advocacy for justice and reform is linked to positive mental health.

This !! 💚💚I’m screaming for you! Congratulations.
That “first” position is so loaded and complex to occupy, but I know you’ll do everything in your power to keep that door open for those that follow you. Hope you’re BIG celebrating
@spattersearch
Hi, I’m a second year soc grad at UT and was just mentioning to a friend how overwhelmed I felt just thinking about finding a living situation for ICPSR this summer. Could we talk further ?
Highly variable in form (physical, virtual, institutional), witnessing strives to promote immediate safety during encounters + long term accountability within policing and carceral institutions
My coauthor and I find that they adapt a counter-surveillance technique historically used by black communities >> witnessing
Witnessing is informed by & seeks to address Black women’s legal estrangement (or delegitimization as victims)
