Had a big rejection today....My brother, who recently lost his 39 yo wife to breast cancer, told me to go hug my daughter, son and husband and be thankful for what I have. Done. Academia and institutions don’t define me, only those who love me ❤️
Five days ago our students were playing in the National Championship. We haven’t had time to celebrate them or acknowledge all of their accomplishments - including a 3.14 GPA fall quarter (in season!!!). We do see all of you & are so proud!

For those of us struggling to comprehend how five Black men could beat to death another Black man - read wisdom from Angela Davis “Racism is so dangerous because it does not necessarily depend on individual actors, but rather deeply embedded in the apparatus…”
For the past 6 years my Dream Team of scholars have studied monetary sanctions (criminal legal fines & fess) in 8 U.S. states. We partnered with
@RussellSageFdn
to publish 17 peer reviewed articles now available.
One thing we don’t talk about regarding racism is the amount of time we spend processing the interaction afterwards. Replaying the moment, what was said & done, what wasn’t, what should’ve been said. How do you stop the replays? Racism is tiring AF.
Friends- What if we started buying gift certificates from our favorite restaurants and businesses? We could give them immediate revenue to hopefully support keeping them open and then we could celebrate with food and shopping once we stop social distancing.
Here I link pretext traffic stops with monetary sanctions as criminal legal mechanisms that allow for police killings. There are clear policy changes we can make now to prevent the trauma, violence and death associated with police stops.
#DaunteWright
@samswey
So, now we are in the phase of U.S. justifying state sponsored violence where they try to demonize the Black victim? And we should soon see pics of the angelic White police officer and hear stories of what a non-racist and good police officer she is? I am so over this.

I don’t want to take away from the “Wall of moms” -our movement for social justice needs everyone. Just a reminder Black moms have been shielding protestors and fighting for years, past and present. But for “some” reason we never get called moms or are spotlighted like this.
The “Wall of Moms” shielding protesters in

tonight. Outrage at the Feds has brought out more and more people, both as protesters and as their defenders.
This may be too soon, but I would like to see similar policy decisions made to forgive criminal legal fine and fee debt. If people can’t pay, they can’t pay.

Public Service: To all faculty of color- we do not have to serve on our department, college or university “diversity” committees. It’s okay to say no and let our White colleagues play this role. We were not hired, at least we should not have been, to serve in this capacity.

This is how a community should treat entrepreneurs instead of arresting them in the subway and giving them expensive fines and fees. You see, there are caring and supportive ways to uplift people in our world. And this doesn’t have to involve police or the CJ system.
One of the biggest areas new PhDs are not mentored - particularly folks of color &women - is negotiating. I tell folks to focus on "Salary, Time and Support." For many this will be their 1st in 3 chances to negotiate your base salary so make it count. Be realistic but push back.
This is called being an accomplice versus ally. A person willing to ostracize themselves or diminish recognition to call out injustice.We don’t need someone to sit by us, hold our hands, speak “for us” & receive praise. We need folks to use their privilege & name injustice.
Took a pandemic to expose U.S.’ barely functioning & inaccessible health care system, schools provide 2 meals a day for kids, working people live precarious lives & high numbers of people with underlying health conditions. But will we do anything about this structural inequality?
We're pretty thrilled to announce that we're searching for a tenure track assistant professor with a specialization in the study of race and ethnicity. We're a collaborative department, and a great place for junior faculty. Join us!

Since Im on the topic of heath. I wanted to note the number of academics who have privately shared their cancer diagnoses with me. They haven’t told colleagues for a variety of reasons. Haven’t told their depts they are going through chemo.
I’ve studied the fines, fees and costs people face when entangled in the criminal legal system for the past 13 yrs. There are several bills in our states that could make real changes. Here is my op ed about WA HB 1412.
Me: I’m going to wear my super hero cape to class tomorrow. Daugher: Ugh Me: What? I’m a super hero, I’m going to wear my cape. Daughter: But it’s not a costume for Halloween if you are wearing your true outfit. 🙅🏽♀️
@deray
When police wear a uniform and carry a weapon the should have a higher standard to get it right. To not park on the wrong floor, to notice the red rug, to notice their surroundings, to not immediately pull their weapon. This case represents so much of what is wrong with system.
I’m not throwing in towel. But what I am surprised and hurt by is that I had the audacity to think that this country would shut down the racism, misogyny, anti-immigrant, anti-Muslim, anti-science and childish leadership of DJT. Instead we wait.....
I had a call yesterday with a man who was sentenced to 30 years in WA DOC for a shooting incident where NO ONE was harmed. He was sentenced at 23 yo and has been in 10 years now. He is a Black man. Today we are reminded that there is clearly a two-tiered system of "justice."
So I snuck out today (I wore a mask and kept distanced). Felt good to be outside on campus and see our students being active and engaged citizens promoting voting. What are your students doing?

Yes please and thank you. No emails or whispers in hallway about how messed up so and so was to me, or that the conversation was BS. I'm over it. Be an engaged disrupter not polite and quiet ally.
I hav three important zooms today. It will be so hard to act like this world is normal while its burning. That someone who could have been a family member was killed by state sponsored violence. That the killers are free. And that my community is in mass mourning. But here I go.
What is also heartbreaking is that one man called out for his deceased mom while being killed and another man literally called his mom while being pulled over by the police just before he was killed. We are living in fear, so much so grown men cry out for their mamas.
@CharlesWMcKinn2
I explicitly addressed in tenure statement. I wrote I was told to “just say no” but in PWI it sustained me. Gave me community & support. I stood on shoulders who did labor for me, I felt compelled to do same for others, also needed it to thrive. It’s important to say out loud.

Friends we need to talk about this in the academic world too. This term always comes up in Sr admin search committee meetings to describe candidates and drives me crazy the difference between how men and women and POCs are described.
Let’s dig into “gravitas,” bc it’s an ambiguous word, selectively applied.
Ever wonder how expression that’s feminine, working-class, queer, or poc isn’t deemed as having “gravitas,” but talking like an Aaron Sorkin character does? 🤔
Men have “gravitas,” women get “likeable.”

has made me think of an incident early on on TT. A colleague asked me to do something on a Thur or Friday. I told them I could address it the next week. I just learned my father’s cancer was back & my son was just tested for a serious disease.
Colleagues, foundations, federal funders - Can we please stop with the diversity surveys? Just deleted 3 in my inbox. I'm done with letting you know how tired, overworked, and isolated I am. You need no more data to fix the issues you know to already exist.
Happy Juneteenth! And on the day our country talks about reparations, here is a reminder of how the past is always present. Monetary sanctions (fines &fees) are a contemporary iteration of the ways the U.S. has always socially controlled marginalized and racialized groups.
What is is about our profession that makes people think they can’t share their illnesses? How can we create more of a compassionate community for scholars to get sick, take leave, and, if possible, come back and have fruitful careers?
I ask my colleagues
@UW
to do the same. Let’s recognize the stress and pain of our students. They have worked hard and focused in this pandemic w/online classes and now the pain, anger and fear - we can’t expect them to concentrate. I can’t concentrate. Please consider.
I would implore all of my

@KateHeeChoi
I think entitlement. I once had a prospective visiting student - a white woman- ask me what it felt like to be the department token! I kid you not! I wasn’t sure if she meant as the only woman of color or ethnographer. I was so shocked/angered I don’t even remember my response.
If you are not Black, please take a moment to read & imagine if these were your babies. Now imagine how outraged you would be & what you would do. Or maybe how our country would react en masse. Treatment of our babies happens like this everyday. I’m beyond enraged.
Cops in unmarked cars grabbed a group of Black children trick or treating in an affluent Brooklyn neighborhood, lined them up against a wall, searched them, handcuffed them, then took them to a police precinct, where they were released without charges.
Had a great opportunity to talk with amazing incoming freshmen at the UW today. I was asked to share advice I wish someone would have told me as a first generation student. Having time to think about this more I wish I would have said......

Great time seeing colleagues and friends. Had a bit of a revelation on my panel today. Realized I’m a different kind of sociologist/scholar. Good news is that I felt 100% okay with that. I absolutely love my career. I hope we can all find a peace like this.
How do we sociologists often ignore and reproduce the inequalities we study? Check out this thoughtful article by
@victorerikray
This is so relevant to a faculty meeting we recently had.
We only clutch our pearls because she is a rich White woman. Hundreds of thousands of men and women who are disproportionately poor and people of color, with chemical addiction, trauma go through this daily. We should care for them and work towards change now!
“When you're admitted you remove all your clothes, including your undergarments, youre given a set of clothes to wear including underwear thats been worn by other people time & time again. Asked to squat & cough. You are inspected nude.” Prison is torture.
My stomach is turning from watching white men purposefully arm themselves with guns, go out and look for trouble, and then cry that they were the victim and had to take a person’s life. Save your Fing tears. I am so angry.

We must remain principled. If we are against the death penalty for some we have to be against it for all. I’m not against it because it disproportionately kills Black people, I’m against it because killing is wrong. Maybe this is the difference in support in this moment.
