Sorry but this isn't a great trend - if this continues great people who are not yet "as" accomplished (likely due to an interaction with socioeconomic advantages) will simply be discarded from competitive programs.
Also there should be no such thing as a "pre-doc".
My jaws keep dropping as I go through 70 PhD applicant files. People w/ 2 coauthored papers & an interesting solo writing sample don’t even make it to the top 10 in my pile.
The level of knowledge, research experience & passion these kids bring to the table is just remarkable! 🤩

Again, my stance is that civil forfeiture should be illegal in any instance.
The cops should not be able to steal from people and the government should only be able to secure money after a conviction.
This story is bonkers. Cops in this South Carolina town run an annual 5-day operation where they stop as many cars as possible. They find any reason to pull people over. And often if the driver has cash, police steal it.
In 2022, cops seized $968,611. That's $194,000 per day.

I'm paid $68k - in 2023 I've had 12 mass media hits, 3 articles, and met with several governmental agencies with some influence on things.
I've passed up several $150k+ jobs because I love what I do... But... It's getting harder to pass that up given how underpaid I am.
What is up with these higher ed salaries?! I was asked to interview for an Asst. Professor position in Florida and the pay is $64k. Another university rep asked me to apply for an Asst. Director of their Multicultural Center. The pay is $47K. Seriously, how are y’all surviving?

40% of truck drivers also have a college degrees (many go CC for cert). They're probably saying, "thanks Dark Brandon for making my truck payments easier."
I just don't know how these people making $100K a year look people in the face who change seniors' bedpans for a living or drive a truck or work the railroad or stock grocery shelves or deliver their Amazon packages and say, "You, yes you, give me $10K." I just don't get it.

This is why I don't grade. My classes are pass (A) or fail (F).
Even doc students get super nervous about this but I keep telling them IF they do what they're supposed to do everything will be fine... Let's focus on learning and growth, not just a few takeaways.
Students “grade grub” because of all kinds of toxic social forces and requirements. It’s a symptom of the badness.
I really only feel sadness about it in that, when such occurs for me, I realize a pedagogy that is intended to avoid such things can’t fully combat the toxicity.

For the last two years I've been deep into talking with
#PSLF
borrowers and surveying them.
The BIGGEST takeaway after thousands of responses and hundreds of interviews is that uncertainty drives up psych distress and suicidal ideation.
RN uncertainty is extremely high - and
PSLF is not subject to current legal challenges, although PSLF borrowers are nevertheless being impacted by them. Even the 8th Circuit concedes PSLF is a legit program. But the ultimate fate of PSLF may hinge on the outcome of the upcoming elections.

: Again $10k wipes debt for 30% of borrowers and wipes it or halves it for 51% of borrowers - many will be CC grads and college stop outs (people who NEED help). This is a WIN, even if it's not the desired outcome for many.

Found an applicant didn't upload their CV but uploaded two cover letters. Instead of making shitty assumptions, cause these are stressful times, I just told them to tell HR to let that person upload the CV proper. No big deal.

Oh do I have a lot of qualitative data on how long wait times, misinformation, and making multiple calls to get different information really messes with people's trust in the system AND spikes up their mental distress.
The story from Thursday isn't about long wait times-- they were long, but hardly aberrant.
Borrowers are being hurt because bad customer service undermines the byzantine programs that make up the student loan safety net.
If we cannot invoke our rights, do those rights exist?

I suspect the migration to SAVE was sizable as it was HEAVILY encouraged when consolidating.
It would be incredibly irresponsible to force repayment until this is solved...
Also the social media groups are likely in a

The unsigned, single-sentence order is extreme and will cause mass chaos.

Well... peeps facing the most uncertainty in PSLF (waiting on forgiveness decision) also are the most distressed - and have the high rates of suicidal ideation.
What's gonna happen when people cant access call centers + remain uncertain about repayment generally?
With the return of student loan payments looming, call centers at 2 major servicers will be closed on Saturdays. That's just 1 of many factors that have advocates worried that if payments resume as scheduled later this year "we are headed into a disaster."
