I helped Louise with her UpGoer5 talk on the carbon cycle, which contained the memorable and poignant sentence "No-one can live on the beautiful woman world" [Venus]. Working with her on that is one of my favorite memories. I would love to see the whole thing.

This seems like a pretty thoughtful approach.
I'm not teaching this semester, so feel free to judge this as idle talk, but if I was teaching, I don't think I'd spend a hot second policing or prohibiting student use of ChatGPT/LLM generative AI. Instead, I'd opt for a stance of full mutual transparency and let the chips fall.

IIRC, Shetley makes a wild error about Ashbery and the poetry wars circa 1960, excluding Ashbery from Donald Allen’s anthology (where he appeared) but saying he was in New Ppets of England and America (where he did not appear). Talk about cognitive bias!

Amazing. 30+ years ago, while I was in grad school, one of my first published papers was on such issues, more or less (“My Most Unwilling Hand: The Mixed Motivations of David Copperfield,” Dickens Studies Annual), but terribly insecure & without the perfect AITA framework.

My own dissertation (1994) was not very good. Perhaps most aren't. A doctoral student is still learning how to be a grown up scholar. Stuck up Yalies shitting on Jill Biden because her writing doesn't meet some quality they've imagined for themselves can get bent.

I've only published in Science once, and that was a coauthored piece on scientific writing, but as soon as it was clear they were going to take it, the editor assigned to the job practically became a coauthor. The text went through a deep revision. Every choice was questioned.

When this came up in TW, I had students start by tracking their sleep. Time to bed/time of rising, day of week. This became subject of first memo w/graphic. Surprise! They weren't sleeping enough. Other habit tracks & improvement plans followed. It was a very reflective time.

This is absolutely wonderful, but, just to pile whimsy on whimsy, the reviewer’s preference for Woolf over Joyce makes no sense. There are extended passages in Joyce that are models of near-scientific precision (see: the entire Ithaca chapter of Ulysses).
1/9 Share Time. Here is an 11 year old review from a paper that Ashok Litwin-Kumar and I submitted during his PhD. The result was a soft reject - but one of the reviewers gave perhaps the funniest review ever! I will post choice excerpts below.
