John Knodel was a wonderful colleague, collaborator, and friend. He made so many important contributions to the field of demography and to the Univ. of Mich. Population Studies Center @UM_PSC. He will be greatly missed.
Our condolences are with family, friends, and collaborators who knew @UM_PSC Professor Emeritus John Knodel. The legendary demographer and institution builder paved the way for future scholars to study demography in South-East Asia. His obituary:

@leightjessica Deaton book is great reference on this-free here: A key point: consumption picks up HH's ability to smooth and insure-over time, through networks, etc. Income (including imputed) is more volatile and may not be best measure of welfare at a point in time.

Great and much deserved tribute to Martin Ravallion from @dmckenzie001 and Berk Ozler. Martin was truly a giant in the field.
Remembering Martin Ravallion: Berk Ozler and I celebrate the life and work of @MartinRavallion, who sadly died over the holiday break. He was an inspiration to both of us.

World Bank Dev Impact blog: Great JMP by Michigan's James Allen @JEAllenIV shows that increasing overlap in school calendar and farm calendar in Malawi led to declines in both grade advancement and time worked on the farm. James is a great job candidate.
Can school calendars improve education? Avoid the farming calendar. Today's job market post by @jealleniv looks at the overlap between the farming calendar and school calendar in Malawi - and how changing when classes are held can make a big difference
