So, a week or so ago, I applied for a background role in a commercial, as a bass player of all things. I had to submit 2 pics (below). Guess who got the gig! The shoot wrapped last night. What a fun experience! Would recommend! (They did switch me to guitar for the commercial).

I've got the entire shop to work on instruments, but my favorite place to do setups and other light maintenance work is on the kitchen table, old school. It's a nostalgic throwback to when I first started guitar work, driving my parents crazy, by taking over their kitchen table.

Current state of mind! But, it's all good. I'm totally frazzled because I was recommended as a hired gun guitarist/vocalist for 4 gigs in the next 3 weeks. I now have 160 songs to learn. And, very little crossover between any of the gigs! Wish me luck!

It's a similar problem for a lot of the singers from the 80s. I can't remember who said it, but I read a quote from one of the 80s vocalists saying they wished they hadn't recorded everything so high because their vocal lines are next to impossible to sing, now that they're older

Us musicians don't understand nomenclature. Sweet Child is in 3 of 4 gigs I've been hired for. I've been given 3 keys: G, Gb, and D. All are somewhat correct. It's technically G, but it's tuned down a 1/2 step (Gb), but the 1st chord is D (tonic). Can't we all just get along ๐?

Finished my string of hired gun gigs last night. 117 songs learned (charted). A whole bunch of material outside of my repertoire that is now part of my musical offering. And, I had the opportunity to work with some amazing musicians. All told, 10/10, would repeat!

Any other musicians have personal idiosyncracies with gear? I can easily switch between different scales (Gibson vs Fender) or neck radius on electric but put a nylon string acoustic in front of me, where the neck joins the body anywhere other than the 12th fret and I'm useless.

As a guitar player, it's easy to fake playing bass. But, to actually play bass well is a whole other story. Bass requires a completely different mindset. It's an incredibly challenging instrument.
