Is always curious to know
Whenever we show Christlike love toward our neighbor, we preach the gospel—even if we do not voice a single word. Love for others is the eloquent expression of the second great commandment to love our neighbor.
Elder Gary Stevenson
I’m active LDS and have served and sacrificed for my beliefs. I feel my faith deeply. I know what LDS leaders have said about abortion, protecting life and religious freedom.
I am pro-choice and because it is a minority view with LDS members, I want to share why
1/
Seeing a lot of hate being thrown at the
@sltrib
and its reporters. Accused of hating the LDS church because they reported on protesting against LGBTQ allies and racist taunts
Let's be grownups and not blame reporters for reporting on racism and homophobia
I’m active LDS and believe in religious freedom. I want to accommodate the needs and wants of others, including LGBTQ people, without violating my moral principles
I am sad and angry about current anti-LGBTQ efforts. I think these efforts are mean, morally wrong and harmful

Retired federal judge Thomas Griffith, a conservative, co-authored a report looking into the 2020 election. He says Jan. 6 protestors were duped. “All the evidence points in one direction,” he says. “And that is that President Biden won, and President Trump lost.”
My mind is still trying to take in how important Tim Ballard's hero status is to so many LDS members
It also seems that conservative schisms are a real threat to the LDS Church
I've been studying contention and how to avoid it. I think Wilcox creates and teaches people to be contentious by vilifying people who don't believe as he does. He name calls - "non-believers" - and uses emotion to try and make us feel contempt for others
“In that moment of crisis….the nonbelievers are the ones who will step on anybody they have to in order to get to their own selfish desire and reach their own selfish goal”
-Brad Wilcox
Harris' message resonates with a lot of LDS voters:
* Child tax credit
* Negotiate drug prices
* Limited (bi partisan bill), but compassionate immigration
* No universal tariffs
* Reproductive freedom (LDS abortion exceptions not legal in some red states)
@LDS4Harris
NEW:
@KamalaHarris
is stepping up outreach to Mormon voters
@AP
first reports that today her Arizona campaign will launch a Latter-day Saints for Harris-Walz advisory committee
There are 450,000+ LDS voters in AZ that could reject Trump over morals
@Jodes_laird
I like her policies and what the Biden admin has accomplished. The inflation reduction act and build back better are great pieces of legislation
If you are LDS and wondering whether to vote for Harris, come join our discussion. You'll hear why many LDS members support Harris
If you are just curious, remember:
Visitors Welcome
As active and believing LDS members, I think most of us want to know that we will always
Protect and help those who are abused
Even if there is
Increased institutional liability or increased involvement by outsiders
AP article + 3 days – A thread

Why? What purpose is served? Who is blessed?
I really don't understand why this is in any way helpful to anyone. It is only aliengating
It is sad to me that God's teachings would take someone to this belief
I call on those who are pro-choice, to reject vilification
I know many who are pro-life. They are sincere and believe they are protecting God’s plan and overall societal goodness. I extend to them grace as they do me, that in our differences we can still be fellow saints

One can see evil in the terrorist org Hamas and still cry for the suffering of Palestinians
One can denounce the policy of settlement Palestinian marginalization and suffering by Israel's gov and decry the slaughter of innocent Israelis by Hamas
One can cry tears for all
It seems like a line is crossed when general authorities (even emeritus) are speakers at political fundraisers. Sharing the billing with Paxton is just icky, given his ethical problems in Texas
I believe in our divine ability to choose. God values, respects, and protects this right. We are responsible and bear consequences for our choices. I don’t believe God is coercive. One can’t limit the eternal options for someone else. Our salvation is our choice alone
2/
LDS have no doctrine on when life begins and ensoulment occurs. We don’t record miscarriages or still births on church records or do ordinances for them. Miscarried or aborted fetus don’t lose eternal opportunity. We don’t believe abortion is murder
6/
Banning abortion is a religious view, not shared by all. Coming from a minority religion I am extra sensitive to religious freedom and believe that we need to protect people’s ability to live according to their beliefs
Religious freedom should guarantee abortion rights
15/
I love it when politicians pick out a quote from MLK to connect with voters, but everything about their political career screams, if I lived then, I would have vilified and disagreed with him in every way.
Pregnancy is a big deal with emotional and physical costs. When the government compels a woman against her will to carry a fetus to full term it commits violence against her. Given the costs to the woman, this violence is significant
9/
The primary driver to ban abortion comes from religious beliefs
I see no broad societal benefits for banning abortion
I see pregnancy as a private issue for the woman based on her religious beliefs. My belief compels me to guarantee a woman’s right to choose for herself
14/
I'm really disappointed by
@GovCox
endorsing Trump. Cox's
#DisagreeBetter
initiative is exactly what we need.
But Trump is exactly the opposite of
#DisagreeBetter
. He divides and incites. Trump's rhetoric is dangerous and extreme and exactly the opposite of what we need today
I can't help but think of the scripture, "But whoso shall offend one of these little ones ... it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea."
The legalities aside, we failed this child
An Arizona judge has dismissed a high-profile child sexual abuse lawsuit against the LDS Church, ruling that officials had no duty to report the abuse because the information was received during confession.
I know everyone comes from a different place, but I can't understand how one can listen to this and not think that Trump isn't delusional and a grave danger to our country should he become president
🇺🇸 Over 150 Pastors & Faith Leaders from across Iowa have endorsed President Trump.
⚡️Today a group of them prayed over him privately before he takes the stage in Cedar Rapids.
#Trump2024
Me: I want people who see problems in the Church to feel comfortable participating at Church
Some: Yes, but they should keep their concerns to themself
Me: But where should they talk about them?
Some:
Me: Let’s create space for everyone
President Oaks, "We should never assert that a faithful Latter-day Saint cannot belong to a particular party or vote for a particular candidate"
Conservative believing LDS member: No
9 LDS representatives are Democrats?
That’s 9 too many.
You can’t be aligned with a party that literally is voting for abortion at any stage for any reason.
@ProletariatRis1
It’s my biggest disappointment w Biden/harris. It’s tragic. W Trump it will be worse. The stakes are so high we can’t sit this one out and have to choose the better/least worse
The argument to compel a woman to carry a fetus to full term is belief that the fetus should be protected against the woman’s will. We lack consensus on when and if to compel this protection. Should it be at the single cell of conception or at viability or at some other point
3/
Abortion is about gender and patriarchy. Women bear almost all costs with pregnancy. 61% of women are pro-choice, while 48% of men are
Yet men dominate Republican legislatures which pass abortion bans
It’s men making choices about women’s bodies
16/
Many of my fellow saints will see my views as morally wrong and will only engage to call me an apostate and ask me to repent
Sadly, twitter might be the only place a pro-choice LDS member can explain their point of view
26/
A very sobering article about how the LDS Church failed to stop the sexual abuse of young children. Having been a BP/SP I now wonder whether my using the "hot line" caused harm
1/
Since I see no clear societal advantage, I just can’t support compelling someone to carry a pregnancy against their will
I don’t support the government in this form of violence
Women will die because of bans against abortion
21/
I’ve advocated for creating space in the LDS Church for people who question. I wrote Bridges about this very challenge
The Church just announced such a space and I am over the moon
Thread on what it is and how I think it will be helpful
PS – It’s not perfect, but it’s good

On
#ConstitutionDay
, we celebrate the document that laid the foundation of our great nation. The Constitution is not just a piece of history—it is a living testament to the values of liberty, justice, and unity that guide us today.
Here in Utah, we honor its divinely inspired
One reason I support Harris is because I think she will be better for the economy.
(I understand some discredit her for the inflation that has negatively impacted many Americans. I'll address that towards the end of the thread)
1/
Self identified liberal LDS members attend church less frequently than conservative LDS members
Are liberal member less faithful?
Is it harder to attend being liberal?
What can we do to make Church more inviting to liberals? Should we try?
I want a society that values life and supports families
I want government that ensures that all has life, liberty and can pursue happiness including
Food, clothing, housing
Access to health care
Affordable education
Safety from violence
Choose based on their conscience
23/
My progressive political view is one that is protective of life while protecting religious freedom. I believe it is moral and consistent with LDS principles
22/
Why do I call it violence? Because it is
The word is stark and escalated but reflect show it feels to someone when one with power, takes away choice and imposes a cost on another
10/
Men make laws banning abortion but bear almost no cost
Yet, men are the major contributor to pregnancy as pointed out by fellow LDS member
@designmom
in this viral thread

I’m a mother of six, and a Mormon. I have a good understanding of arguments surrounding abortion, religious and otherwise. I've been listening to men grandstand about women's reproductive rights, and I'm convinced men actually have zero interest in stopping abortion. Here's why…
Today Utah will likely elect Celeste Maloy to Congress. She thinks the the Jan 6th impeachment was "political grandstanding"
By diminishing efforts to violently and unlawfully overturn a fair election she can't be trusted to protect the Constitution and democracy
Health care is not a human right.
Housing is not a human right.
Education is not a human right.
You have no right to others' labor. Your "rights" aren't rights if they require taxing/enslaving others to provide you the products/services you demand.
When I was mission president in Africa, I interviewed 100s of men/women for baptism who had abortion in their past. The circumstances of rape, incest, sex trafficking, poverty, lack of healthcare was crushing. I weep for those who felt they had no other choice but abortion
20/
Some say unwanted pregnancy is a consequence of bad behavior by the woman and she should bear the responsibility. But even if that were the case, it’s a religiously created view and shouldn’t negate the right for the woman to choose
And there is always a man involved

FoxNews watchers among religious groups.
This despite FoxNews being rated as unreliable (broadcasting demonstrable falsehoods).
I don't care that they are conservative, but why would anyone knowingly watch something whose business model is to produce false news
60% of white evangelicals have watched Fox News in the past 24 hours. It's 51% of white Catholics. And just 14% of atheists.
Hindus and Muslims love CNN. >60% watch daily. While 52% of Black Protestants watch every day.
Only 19% of white evangelicals tune in to CNN, though.
What kind of violence?
Health and emotional costs by being compelled to do something you don’t want
A permanently different life, including financial, educational, and social opportunities
For those who have an illegal abortion, potentially being caged as a criminal
11/
I wish for a society where abortion was rare and unusual
As someone who wants to build bridges, I want a united conversation about how we could create such a society and so many feel they have no choice
Sadly, today’s politics are divided without any dialogue to be had
25/
@Deseret
@bethanyshondark
@DNewsOpinion
Surprised that
@Deseret
would choose to magnify Tucker Carlson's voice. The disclosure of his recent texts suggest that he is a "bad actor" profiting on spreading lies and messages of hate and polarization
Some who have abortions regret their decision and suffer negative mental health effects as do women who are denied access to abortion. So do miscarriages and still births. Pregnancy impacts a woman’s long-term health
Its not simple
13/
Strongly worded statements are not enough.
Those who turned our judicial system into a political cudgel must be held accountable.
We are no longer cooperating with any Democrat legislative priorities or nominations, and we invite all concerned Senators to join our stand.
When governments compel and control people it is committing violence which should only occur when there are clear advantages to society that a consistent majority agree upon. Some violence is necessary, like requiring us to pay taxes, or caging violent criminals
8/
I support Harris on immigration:
I don't want to create a police force and deport millions, causing broken families and economic chaos
I favor a bi-partisan legislative solution to immigration, much like what Biden supported but which Trump rejected
#LDS4Harris
@BrookeLeFevre
A leader merely needs to ask those who step away from the Church and they will understand that there are sincere and considered reasons
From Elder Uchtdorf:
I love the expansiveness of LDS theology. It has shaped my life for the 45 years of my adult life
Not all see that expansiveness, even at church. Some days, it’s well hidden or even denied. But at its foundation, it’s beautiful and transformative
1/
Beliefs about when life begins and when and if ensoulment occurs can’t be subjected to scientific study and are varied by people and religions. Some Christian, Jewish and other faith groups are pro-choice because of their religious beliefs.
5/
LDS have policies that defines elective abortion as a sin for its members except for rape, incest, and the life and health of the mother and fetus. The church also encourages us to protect life and religious liberty
7/
Disappointed that all Utah reps voted for Jim Jordan, an insurrectionist, who has never sponsored a vote that has passed.
Glad that 20 GOP members, said no
Why do we not report abuse in all cases, not just in states with mandatory reporting
Arizona law doesn't prohibit bishop(s) reporting. So, there must be some church policy
What is that policy and why?
One take-away for me from the DNC was the power of women. Not just Kamala, but Michelle, Oprah, AOC, Nancy, Elizabeth, Tammy, Jill, Jasmine, Amy, Gretchen
Sorry men, but they bring a different tone, and it is wonderful. Joy, hope, forward looking
Why has it taken so long
“But uh the transgender thing is an incredible thing… your kid goes to school & comes home a few days later with an operation the school decides what’s going to happen with your child & you many of these childs 15 years later say “what the hell happened who did this to me?”
🤦🏻♀️
One reason I support PRIDE is I want to extend dignity to all
Ulysses Soares says,
"Peace begins with respect for the uniqueness of each person - build social trust, strengthen friendships and encourage us to defend each other’s religious freedom"
I’m cautious in telling other people how to live their life when I don’t have their life experience. I have 6 children, but know only a little about how pregnancy is felt and experienced by women, particularly those from different religious, cultures and economic classes
19/
@SenMikeLee
I love it when politicians pick out a quote from MLK to connect with voters, but everything about their political career screams, if I lived then, I would have vilified and disagreed with him in every way.
Mitt Romney: “I think the border is a very important issue for Donald Trump. And the fact that he would communicate to Republican senators and congresspeople that he doesn't want us to solve the border problem because he wants to blame Biden for it is is really appalling."
Every time I call health insurance customer support I experience cognitive dissonance and deep despair
How can the richest country in the world have such a crappy health care system?
Absent specific reasoning from the Church, I favor removal of clergy exemption for CSA reporting
CSA is heinous and complex. Lay Church leaders lack skill to work with victims or abusers. Being set apart doesn’t overcome lack of specialized skills. We need professionals
10/
NEW: A trans girl missed her graduation after a Trump-appointed judge allowed the school district to forbid her from attending the ceremony unless she wore male attire.
She's lived authentically as a girl all through high school with no issue until now.
I am sickened with the news of the murder of Tausha Haight, her children and mother 10 days ago. (I won’t name the murderer). It is an unspeakable horror. Then, I’ve read tweets and stories about how people have characterized the murderer
I’ve wondered, what can we learn?
1/
I don't believe the "priesthood ban" was revelation.
@WPaulReeve
's research is so important. Acknowledging our painful past is important and necessary.
In a new Deseret Book volume,
@WPaulReeve
explains how Brigham Young — not Joseph Smith — established the LDS temple/priesthood ban on Black members. Crucial knowledge for all Latter-day Saints to "weed out racism."
Some people and religions believe that at conception life begins and ensoulment occurs. For them fetal death is no different than the death of a live birth of a baby or a child.
4/
I hope the AP article provides us the impetus to evaluate and improve. I want our Church to be the Good Samaritan in taking care of these wounded, even if it costs more in legal settlements
And like MLK Jr, I want the road to be fixed
24/
Kind of surprised that
@Deseret
and
@halrobertboyd
publishes a puff piece on Kennedy
He isn't an independent moderate voice. He is a fringe voice. The article briefly mentions that he is controversial, but not the extent of his conspiracy beliefs
