So
@NATO
released new defence spending data recently, including each ally's spending against the two NATO defence investment pledges: spending at least 2% of GDP on defence and spending 20% of that on defence on Equipment and related R&D. The new 🇨🇦 data is embarrassing.
Liberal government looking to cut $1 billion out of defence as part of spending reduction, committee told. The country's top military commander says it is prompting some "difficult" conversations within the military.

@NationalDefence
@NATO
What is new, is that 🇨🇦 is now the *only*
@NATO
ally that isn't meeting either
@NATO
target. The attached info graphic plots allies against both targets. 🇨🇦 alone is in the quadrant of shame, meeting neither. (Denmark falls short on kit, but will hit 2% this year.)
Spending 2% of GDP on defence isn't just a commitment Canada made as a
@NATO
ally. It would allow us to better defend Canadians and make a more meaningful contribution to international security.

PSA: pharmacies are working flat out right now. If your prescription doesn't need a refill yet, don't go in and add to the demand. If your pharmacy has a delivery service, use it, and don't come in. If you have questions you'd like to ask (ie. delivery?) call, don't go in.
The revised estimates for 2023 for 🇨🇦 are 1.33% of GDP will be spent on
@NationalDefence
and 14.37% of that spent on Equipment and R&D. So 🇨🇦 is, yet again, falling short of both
@NATO
investment pledge targets. Nothing new there, we haven't since the Wales Summitt in 2014.
It will be very, very tough to deliver over $900m in cuts at DND without reducing the readiness of our military fleets. Over 1/2 of what
@NationalDefence
spends on services supports the capital program. <2% is management consulting.

It would be great for everyone to keep in mind that many of the people that keep these stores open work for relatively low compensation, part time, etc. And a lot of them are scared shitless right now. So be kind.
Australia is to increase defence spending by more than A$50bn (US$32bn) over the next decade as it prepares its military forces to be able to “resist coercion” that may arise in the Indo-Pacific.
Interesting shift in views. I wonder how a better understanding of the current state of the CAF and how grim the near to medium term looks would influence attitudes.
For the Monday morning crowd:
New
@NATO
spending data is out, and the 🇨🇦 data is embarrassing.
Canada is alone in Nato's Quadrant of Shame: Meeting neither alliance defence spending target (spending 2% at least on defence, and 20% of that on Equipment and R&D).

We don't know what it will become and how much it will or won't matter to us. For those reasons alone being outside it is problematic.

🇨🇦 reassessed what we report in our NATO data in 2017, which added ~+.2% a year from other departments without revising historical data, so data before and after 2017 aren't directly comparable.
Minister Blair is correct.
🇨🇦 has made a massive reinvestment in defence spending since 2014.
And will approach about 1.6% of GDP in the next several years.
Up from less than 1% - a historic low - when Jason Kenney was Defence Minister.

It's a lot! Much needed capability and from conception to delivery as best as I can tell, the fastest major crown procurement at DND since we fielded kit direct to Afghanistan and bought C17s straight off a production line

One thing not yet part of the proposed defence cuts discussion - the cumulative total. New spending is announced with 20 yr totals (eg, SSE, NORAD Mod) so cuts with ongoing impacts should be treated similarly.
Over 20 yrs, current cuts will reduce defence spending by ~$17B.
I was too occupied by 🦃 to catch this on the weekend, but I had to chance to speak to the Globe Editorial team as they prepared Saturday's editorial on the impact of defence budget cuts.
Will they choose one, un-choose it, review for 2 yrs, ultimately choose none, leave for next government to choose, who will choose one, un-choose it, choose more of the old ones we already have while continuing to finally choose a new one? 🛩
