Spent Shabbat in Jerusalem bumping into people who do nothing but bash israel all year long and then come in the summer to recharge their spiritual batteries. Would be hilarious if it weren’t so duplicitous and self-righteous.
"The city of Tel Aviv fervently requests of its residents, as Purim approaches, not to use national or religious garb of our Muslim or Christian neighbors as masks, in order not to offend them. ~ The Municipality of Tel Aviv (1920)"
If you're not following
@bariweiss
on substack (and you're neither crazy left not crazy right), you should be. This story about what's going on at
@smithcollege
will make your blood boil.
In a world in which decency and honor are in very short supply, the courage of Captain Michel Bacos, the Air France pilot who refused to abandon his Entebbe passengers (and who died this week) ought to be remembered with gratitude and respect.
Somehow Sanders has convinced many that a socialist pushing 80 years old who wants to let incarcerated mass murderers vote is more electable. Seriously, Democrats? If you actually want to win the White House. look elsewhere
Probably the funniest sentence I've ever read in the NYT, in an Editorial:
"This board has been a strong supporter of Israel and a two-state solution for many years, and we remain committed to that support."
I don't much agree with
@PeterBeinart
or Simone Zimmerman, but they haven't murdered people. Yet Philippines' Rodrigo Duterte brags that he has, and compares himself proudly to Hitler. Peter & Simone get stopped at the border and Duterte gets warm welcome? PM term limits anyone?
American liberalism is in danger. A new ideology is rising to replace it—and it has dangerous implications for Jews. I’m very happy to be writing again for
@tabletmag
:
(1) For years, many have been struggling to explain to Jews who support Trump because of his Israel policy why that is so short-sighted. To my mind, no one has ever expressed it better than
@bariweiss
did in her recent Bill Maher interview.
"Trump has been asked at least twice what his plans are for his second term, each time by friendly interviewers. He responded with his trademark verbal incontinence."
@JenSeniorNY
is regularly hilarious (and insightful). A wicked clever pen.
Palestinians have every right to protest settlements. What interests me is whether any of those people who objected to AIPAC's ad about Ilhan Omar will have anything at all to say about Pal's use of swastika in their protest. Anyone taking bets?
If you read only one thing today, it should be this column by
@bariweiss
. Anyone who doesn't think we're in the midst of a spreading plague, just doesn't think. And no one puts it better than Bari.
When I was younger, I couldn't understand those German Jews with all the evidence that something terrible was about to happen-yet did nothing and stayed. Now, as I see it everywhere around me, I see that like then, it will have get much worse for most Am Js to fear for themselves
Well,
@PeterBeinart
, the poll shows that 33.7% favor a one state solution and 33.1% favor continued armed resistance. So almost 70% are committed to ending Israel as a Jewish state, rather than creating two states side by side. Do you have a theory to explain THAT?
New poll shows Palestinians in West Bank now favor 1 state over 2 states but Palestinians in Gaza still twice as likely to back 2 states. Anyone have a theory to explain that?
Israel (prob) after weighing consequences (almost certainly) takes out head of Iranian nuclear program - whose life was about destroying Jewish state. Yet
@jstreetdotorg
decries the killing. Even Israel's most-left parties didn't do that. Why? They care about Israel's survival.
A colleague of mine just checked in for his flight at TLV and sent me this photo of the check-in area. For those not familiar, it's usually teeming with hundreds and hundreds of people.
So the 70% + Jews who vote Democratic are disloyal? Can one even imagine a more antisemitic trope? Anyone still want to say he’s not Jew-baiting? How long before a guy with a gun decides to get rid of the Jews his prez says are disloyal? Can’t see it coming?
I had never been spit on in my life before this morning--when I went to the Kotel to check out
@Womenofthewall
. Turns out their opponents are *really* into spitting.
In this stellar piece,
@Martin_Kramer
argues that the academic boycott of Israel, ostensibly targeting Israeli academe, is actually meant to isolate and stigmatize Jewish academics in America.
@PeterBeinart
When their leaders say EXPLICITLY that they plan to overrun the fence and "massacre" Jews (their words), what would you have Israel do? Let them dismantle the fence w 1000's coming in? I feel sorry for are the soldiers who had a God awful job to do to protect their state.
WATCH: Prime Minister Yair Lapid's remarks last night, in his first speech upon taking office.
"The State of Israel is bigger than all of us. More important than any of us. It was here before us, and will be here long after us."
Full remarks >>
Yet another fabulous -- and disconcertingly important -- piece from
@bariweiss
on anti-Semitism in America and what American Jews are sadly getting used to.
On the eve of the Kavanaugh Senate Circus, it would be self-centered of us Israelis not to take a moment to thank President Trump for all he does to make our country look normal.
Only little bit of info that the NYT fails to mention is that when the PA refused the vaccines, Israel began to use them on our own teenagers. How likely is it that we'd do that if we thought they weren't good? PR stunt over saving their people. Again.
Shows that some people have the capacity to say they were wrong in how they've played their cards and are owning up to the damage that they have caused. Now we'll see if leaders of other American Jewish organizations will cease their Bibi-genuflecting.
When Jews Rush to Mourn Rush (Times of Israel) He said "“Feminism was established so as to allow unattractive women access to the mainstream of society.” And Jewish leaders are mourning him?
What's great about your tweet is that now the veneer is gone. This has nothing to do with Israel. You just don't like Jews. That's your right, but it also our right to stop pretending you're not an anti-Semite.
What does a community that’s no longer committed to any standards of self respect look like as it prepares to self-destruct? Like this.

To see why I think
@PeterBeinart
's piece crosses a line, see especially from 39:00 ... one _can_ become a traitor to the Jewish people. Question is whether anyone will have the spine to call it that and react appropriately.
This was posted as Israel responded to two rockets fired at Tel Aviv. Perfect fine for politics to differ. But hard to deny that this
@IfNotNowOrg
tweet is anything but a sad combo of self-hatred and some unaddressed emotional imbalance.
We are praying for the people of Gaza as they endure another assault from Israel's military, and demand that our communal leadership stand against this violence.
#GazaUnderAttack
El Al security boarding agent pages me, grills me about piece of electronics in my baggage that makes them suspicious. She is super tough on me AND totally professional. Then I notice her name badge. She’s an Israeli Arab. I thought that was simply awesome.
Mazal tov to my friend, the indefatigable, talented and courageous
@bariweiss
, on the appearance today of her first book,
#HowToFightAntisemitism
. Wishing you great success with this important book. It's fun to share a pub date with you!
The irony here speaks volumes. Many Diaspora Jews were outraged by Jewish nation-state law but Netanyahu couldn't have cared less. When Druze are (quite rightly) enraged, Bibi gets cracking. Bennet is even open to amending the law. *Shows who counts.*
This is actually a very gutsy and principled move by
@AIPAC
. Morally absolutely the right move. Would be nice to see those usually critical of the “establishment” giving credit where credit is very much due.
Few would have predicted that the simple process of getting vaccinated against Covid-19 would restore, however briefly, the Israel we sometimes long for. My column today in
@bopinion
The over-simplifying living-room pontifications of American Jews (on both sides of the spectrum) who do not live in Israel, who write as if they are smarter than Israel's generals or more moral than Israel's population are, I have to say, nauseating.
Unintentionally, an excellent piece in the NYT by
@marcatracy
illustrated the similarity in language between American progressive liberal rabbinic students and antisemites in the US. What is unraveling is not just American Zionism, but Jewish peoplehood.
Well, it might have something to do with their not renouncing terror and their refusal to publicly acknowledge our right to be here. The picky stuff, you know.
I always found it difficult to fathom how a nation of people deeply scarred by a history replete with prejudice, religious persecution, & unspeakable violence perpetrated against them would not be the empathetic champions of those whose rights & freedoms are still abridged.
@PeterBeinart
suggests to
@DanielBShapiro
all onus should be on Israel. Nothing demanded of the Palestinians. As I note in yesterday's , that's part of the problem w/ Beinart's analysis - He writes as if Palestinians have no agency or responsibility.
.
@DanielBShapiro
We disagree on whether 2 States is dead. But if you support 2 states then fight for it. Condition military aid. Show Israel there's a price for settlement growth. Asking nicely hasn't worked. Don't just watch the body die + then castigate us for saying kaddish
This excellent piece by
@Eve_Barlow
on why American Jews are unwilling to acknowledge American anti-Semitism left me thinking that we can now understand the behavior of the Jews of Berlin in the 1930's. The situations are not analogous. The instinct is.
This drawing appeared in one of Israel's papers this weekend. How some Israelis are reading the horrifying events in Afghanistan, and how I think we might think about them in light of Zionist history, is the subject of my substack this week.
...
No sane country can consent to this barbaric malignancy on its borders. Hamas must be eradicated, no matter what the cost. “Hamas gang raped and beheaded women at rave massacre, fresh testimony reveals - The Jewish Chronicle”
There are probably still a few people who believe trump is good for Israel. But he’s doing all he can to thin their ranks. “Iran 'can do what they want' in Syria, Trump says.”
Today, June 7th, is the secular anniversary of Israel's capturing the Old City and reunited Jerusalem in 1967. Given how contentious Jerusalem has been in recent days, some thoughts on the bigger picture I though it behooves us to remember.
An angel? He was a disgrace. The way he spoke about women. Minorities. People with disabilities. He stood for the very opposite of decency. So do his fans.
@CarolineGlick
Bialik in 1916 Moscow lecture. REAL division in Jewish people is not between religious & secular, but between those who speak & read Hebrew and have access to the richness of Jewish life & culture, vs those who live Jewish life through translation. Fairly prophetic.
This is horrifying in ways too numerous to count. But will there be angry campus protests in US? The way there would be if Israel accidentally caused the deaths of 5 people, not 70?
How the U.S. Hid an Airstrike That Killed Dozens of Civilians in Syria
"Suleimani, a flamboyant former construction worker and bodybuilder with snowy white hair, a dapper beard, and arching salt-and-pepper eyebrows...."
Guess from where that's quoted? The New Yorker. The West is coming apart in front of our eyes.
Or it’s giving in to fascists like Im Tirzu and actually becoming the racist country that we, it’s defenders, have long claimed it was not. (I guess that to you I’m now a post Zionist. That’s a hoot.)
Have been speaking to a number of Am Js who haven't thought about Israel in any meaningful way in years and haven't been terribly focused on their J-ish identity. Now they're worried and following closely. Sadly,
@IlhanMN
might be best thing to happen to Am J ID since June '67.
I don't agree with all that
@PeterBeinart
says in but that's fine. Yet the headline, "Israel’s Choice To Shoot Palestinians Should Horrify-But Not Surprise Us" is disgusting.
@Jane_Eisner
's
@jdforward
has hit a new low. That's actually an accomplishment.
(1) Sadat made peace with Egypt in 1979 and in the end demanded nothing for the Pal's. He'd never cared. Hussein made peace with Israel in 1994 and demanded nothing for Pal's. Saudi Arabia has done little for them and is cozying up to Israel. Now UAE asks nothing.
Six months after our previous letter to Diaspora Jewry, Israel's situation has grown more worrisome.
@YKleinHalevi
,
@MattiFriedman
and I argue that Jews worldwide need to react accordingly.
Also worth noting liberal rabbis including from LA who are not distancing themselves from her bc they don’t want to tarnish their liberal credentials. Same re Tamika.
Not surprising but still noteworthy. Residents of Arab Wadi Ara "Triangle" area, slated to be handed over to PA in new borders, are opposed. "We are residents, not enemies." Never acted that way until this came around. Interesting what gets whose attention.
The cease fire simply means -- at best -- that we'll get some quiet before we go through this again. Friends asked me, "If there will never be peace, where's the hope?" Here's what I said.
