I'm thrilled to finally announce that today is my first official day as a game designer on the
#dnd
team for
@Wizards_DnD
. I can't wait to give to back to this amazing game that's done so much for me, and for so many others.
So, this 👉
#WotCStaff
We just got a text from the dad of my daughter’s friend, and apparently her friend picked up a
#dnd
Starter Set.
He wants to come over tomorrow so she can show him how to play. I’mma cry.
D&D terminology is a lot like accents, or dialects. You can often tell "where" someone is from, at least in part, by the language they use to describe things in the game. I hear a lot of 2e with 4e influences in
@matthewmercer
's accent.
Delightful.
DMs: Legendary Resistance is really for dealing with show-stopping effects, but if the rogue hits your BBEG with a bag of ball bearings and Xalpheron the Malevolent is going ass over teakettle, you and I both know you're burning one of his get out of Banishment free cards.
#dnd
I beg of you: Do not gate plot-critical information behind difficult rolls with no other way for characters to find that information.
Hell, don't gate plot-INTERESTING information that way either.
D&D rules are my job, and I don't know them all by heart with 100% certainty. I look things up all the time, even if I'm reasonably sure I know them.
You are absolutely not required to know all the rules off the top of your head. Don't hesitate to use the books as a resource.
One of my favorite things I've seen for the upcoming core book refresh is the concept art for the red dragons.
I adore that their underside is shades of gray, to blend in with a smoke-filled sky as they destroy a landscape.

It's a-okay to dislike, or even be mildly irritated with, some element of a game. That happens to all of us, and it always will. Your feelings are valid.
If I'm talking about something I enjoy, maybe that's not the time to jump in with how much you don't like it.
Did something I haven't done since high school: Created a
#dnd
character by rolling 3d6 in order.
What has two thumbs and is playing a level 8 wizard with 26 hit points? This guy! d O_O b
Reminder: If you ride my retweets to fight with people about their right to be treated as full human beings, I'm blocking you. One and done.
I love D&D and if you're here for that, wonderful!
Black lives matter and trans rights are human rights. That part's non-negotiable.
If you aren't using all this extra time in quarantine to refine and perfect Critical Role Land, you never lacked time, you lacked conviction. 👀
@matthewmercer
If you ever find yourself wondering "Why Pride Month?" just read through the replies. That's why.
Block early, block often. D&D is for everyone (and no, there's no paradox here. Grow up).
June is Pride Month, a time set aside to celebrate and increase the visibility of folks in the LGBTQIA2S+ community. Let's look at just a few of the talented queer creators who write third-party content for Dungeons & Dragons.

Back in 3rd edition D&D days when internet "wisdom" tried to convince me that bards were bad, my group and I started keeping tallies of every time the +1 from Inspire Courage turned a miss into a hit.
A word to all my friends out there who consume RPG material, especially self-published and third-party stuff:
Reviews and feedback give creators life. Not only does it tell us what we’re doing wrong so we can improve and what we’re doing right to keep up... (cont)
I'm going to keep on wearing a mask when I'm around others in public.
People don't know I'm vaccinated. I don't know if anyone else is vaccinated. I have no desire to carry this plague back to my unvaccinated children or to anyone else.
Erring on the side of not killing anyone.
I like that wizards don't get healing magic in D&D, in general.
A few exceptions like vampiric touch and life transference (Raistlin healing Tas, anyone?) are cool. Just giving them cure wounds? Hard pass.
A theurge-type Arcane Tradition would be fine.
If you insist on underground-dwelling trpg species having no pigment or eyes, but don't also insist that your exoskeleton-having species go through molting periods where they lose their natural protection so they can have a squishy growth spurt, I'm terribly disappointed in you.
“In rules terms, clerics choose domains, not deities, so your world can associate domains with deities in any way you choose.”
- DMG pg. 10.
Bear in mind this means domains can very well not be associated with specific deities at all.

This doesn’t work for me. Preparation, how I mean it when I say it’s impossible to overprepare, is not about a script. It’s about having a solid understanding of what’s going on in the world around and adjacent to the action spotlight on the PCs. 1/7
I love
#dnd
. It's been an important part of my life since I was little. D&D's role in my life has grown along with me, and has become a cornerstone. It's the backdrop for some of the best times, and best friends I've ever known.
It is also not above reproach or critique. 1/6
Imagine looking at people watching with growing horror as the last 4 years' administration systematically threatened their basic human rights, and then telling them to offer that administration empathy, and forgiveness, and welcome.
Absolutely not. Hold them all accountable.
There's been a lot of gabble about the Dungeon Master's Guide lately, so I figured I'd finally take a stroll through it and pick out some of my favorite bits. This isn't a comprehensive list, but I hope you might find something intriguing to check out.
#dnd
Thread time. 1/-
Game amusing: As a DM I’ll tell PCs what they feel. Terrifying things cause fear reactions, defeats cause anger, loss begets sadness. We don’t get to pick what we feel in life.
What I don’t do is tell them how they ACT in response to those feelings. That’s all on the player.
I adjust hit points for dramatic effect in
#dnd
combat all the time.
This is a super easy, basic tweak you can make to adjust the game's pace to the engagement and enjoyment of your players, and to heighten narratively powerful moments.
I guess I'm not "actually" playing D&D 🙄
I've been sleeping on sorcerers a little. I've had my thoughts on their whole feel ever since 5e released, but I've been playing one recently (admittedly as an NPC party member), and holy crap, y'all. Font of Magic is FUN.
#dnd
My level 1-20 experience in 5e was amazingly positive. It didn't break down as people often claim
#dnd
does (throughout the editions), can adventuring at tier 4 still felt as engaging and threatening as earlier tiers, with more spotlight moments of heroism and story.
For
#Critters
who want the visual, here is “The Dutch Giant” who is 7’ 2” tall. Grog who is 8’7” tall is another 1.5’ taller. Joe next to him is 5’8” (Vax being 5’9”) So even this doesn’t truly capture the scale of Grog to the team.

Today is my first offical day as Lead TRPG Designer at
@AvantrisLegends
! I'm thrilled to join this team and I'm already steeped in working on The Crooked Moon, a folk horror inspired setting for D&D!
I can't wait for people to see what this team is cooking up!
So excited the news is out, and the Descent is upon us! This is the first product I had the privilege to work on as an official Wizard. Can't wait to see the war machines in action!

#DnDLive2019
Today we return to Unearthed Arcana with a selection of new spells, and magic tattoos!
Also live now is the feedback survey for Subclasses Part 3!

"The moment you are at the game table, it’s no longer "our” Dragonlance or "our" Forgotten Realms, it’s your Forgotten Realms, it’s your Dragonlance. You’re now telling your stories in those settings." -Jeremy Crawford
#WotCStaff
A couple of people have engaged with me directly or indirectly, seemingly hoping for some dirt-slinging or anti-D&D/Wizards sentiment.
You are barking up the wrong tree. Go elsewhere. I love D&D. I have nothing but respect, admiration, hope, and boundless affection for the team.
That little sigh from
@matthewmercer
when Caleb blew his roll compels me to reiterate one of my favorite DM axioms:
If you don't want them to fail, don't ask them to roll!
#CriticalRole
My sister in law, a nurse, has Covid-19 and pneumonia.
If you can, please, Stay. The Fuck. Home.
Frivolously disregarding distancing and quarantine is KILLING people. Stop it.
New year, new arcana to unearth! Check out four new playtest subclass options! Barbarian: Path of the Beast, Monk: Way of Mercy, Paladin: Oath of the Watchers, and Warlock: Noble Genie!
#dnd
The number of DMs who apparently roll hit points for every monster and NPC is, quite frankly, a little frightening.
It's like walking into a library and each patron casually drips three drops of mustard on every fifth page of their books, and you're afraid to say anything.
I'm not sure who needs to read this, but rogues don't need advantage to deliver a Sneak Attack.
Get out there and stab villains standing next to your friends!
#dnd
I was just legitimately emotionally moved by seeing someone say "opportunity attack" and not "attack of opportunity" when talking about 5e.
So that's apparently the warm-wax-soft kind of day I'm gonna be having.
I am immensely grateful for the
@WorldsBeyondPod
crew for pushing back against the idea that D&D is only combat.
Pointing out that often it’s a cultural trend instead of something from the game itself.
So I checked out the account of that Nerdpraneur (awful name btw, saints preserve us) podcast platforming a return abuser and skimming through their feed I saw an episode on “What if the WotC layoffs are a good thing actually?”
Get fuuuuucked 😂 Into the void with you
Deeply bittersweet thing. Thanks for everything,
@Wizards_DnD
I really hope you all check out Quests from the Infinite Staircase, it’s something special.
#dnd
I play a goliath warlock who gets to beat things with a giant driftwood stick, and that makes me so damn happy.

If a confluence of circumstances in
#dnd
creates rules interactions that don't make sense to you, ignore it. Change it. Do what makes sense for given situation the characters find themselves in.
The rules aren't written to cover every possible circumstance.
D&D is a co-op game, in which we weave fantasy tales for our mutual bliss.
If someone wants to play a hero in a wheelchair, for example, uphold their bliss, especially if that hero reflects their real-life experience.
We're all happier when we support each other like this.
8 year old Dan, staring in wonder at the AD&D Monster Manual and filling graph paper dungeons with archdevils and goblins, could never have imagined this.
Thanks,
@ChrisPerkinsDnD
, for the chance to work alongside these great designers, and to give back to the game I love.
#dnd
DO NOT FUCKING DO THIS
If you spew this bile, I'm blowing you out the digital airlock. And aside from the slur, critical discussion with the goal of improving this game we love is crucial. I want to hear it. The rest of the design team wants to hear it. This is vile.

It's Theros, y'all. The new constellation ampersand is for Mythic Odysseys of Theros.
Sorry friends, nothing else confirmed at this time.
