Wales' Active Travel Board Chair - Runner, cyclist; TooGoodToWaste. Board Member Chwaraeon Cymru. Rhedwr, Seiclwr, ailgylchwr dodrefn a beics. Fe / Him
I'm absolutely raging about the protest on Cathedral Rd today. Our politicians in Wales are accessible in a wide variety of ways as befits a modern European democracy. People's homes are rightly considered off limits for such events - and they should remain so.
Penblwydd Hapus iawn Mam Gu - 101 heddiw - a chyfle i'w cyfarch o'r ardd! Mam Gu is 101 today and at least I got to say Penblwydd hapus from the garden today
PLEASE can we all try to be a little gentler on twitter, particularly to those like
@MarkDrakeford
and
@vaughangething
who are leading us in these difficult times. Question, query, probe, call for more action - of course, but they are good people in unprecedented circumtances.
Heddiw yw efallai y diwrnod anoddaf i beidio fod yn gallu teithio. Dyma Mam Gu sy'n dal i fyw ar ben ei hunain yn Aberdar - ac heddiw mae hi'n 100 oed. Wedi dysgu cymaint i fi, wedi rhoi cymaint o gariad a buaswn i wrth fy modd yn dathlu gyda hi. PENWBLWYDD HAPUS IAWN GU!
Given the number of exemptions in Carmarthenshire, I'm fascinated to learn how a business in Llanelli is taking an hour and a half more to do deliveries? Or have
@BBCWalesNews
simply reported this, without in any way checking the facts
This line from Eddie Butler is remarkably powerful (and thought provoking): "The United Kingdom that my parents were proud to identify with, no longer exists".
@YesCymru
Yesterday we said goodbye to our lovely cat Elfyn - hit by a car and despite the vets best efforts the time came to say hwyl fawr. Our wonderful neighbour (and artist) who used to look after him when we were away just popped a card through the door. Smiles and tears ...
Covid restrictions mean I can't celebrate my wonderful Mam Gu's 100th birthday with her. She's an amazing character, still lives on her own in Aberdare (with some support from
@RCTCouncil
) and I will miss hugely being with her today. HAPPY BIRTHDAY GU!
Ddoe, wedi cael cyfle i ymweld a Mam Gu tu fewn am y tro cyntaf mewn 12 mis efallai ... mor hyfryd i allu weld teulu 'to (heb boeni am dywydd chwilboeth neu arw!). Anodd credu fod hi'n 101 erbyn hyn - rhywbeth yn y dwr yn Abernant mae'n siwr 😀
Os yw ysgolion yng Nghymru yn cau ar ryw bwynt - tybed fyddai

@SkyNews
I’m genuinely puzzled as to what the purpose of the searches are - parties financial records are all electronic and normally pretty accessible to auditors / authorities etc - what is going on here?
Very pleased to be reappointed as Chair of the Welsh Active Travel Board. Keen to hear views on priorities for the next two years - travel to school, e-bikes, inclusive active travel, high quality routes linking towns, villages and cities? Others?
Its good to see lots of
@YesCymru
stickers - but really hope that for every sticker put up we're having at least one conversation with a friend or family member who is less confident about independence. Lamposts won't have a vote in the referendum ...
I have very many criticisms of Boris Johnshon, probably the UK's worst PM for over a century - BUT please think before criticising his running. There'll be dozens of people today thinking about going out for a run, worried about how they'll look - and they'll read your tweets.
Hi
@RoyalHolloway
- can you help? I understand that you add an s to words in English to them into a plural. So the plural of spokeswoman would be spokeswomans - am I right??

leaf leaves
thief thieves
wolf wolves
man men
woman women
child children
tooth teeth
foot feet
louse lice
mouse mice
ox oxen
goose geese

fox foxes

Wow! Never realised before! Thanks
@thetimes
Had really nice news from
@FOR_Cardiff
that I've been chosen as one of Cardiff's COVID heroes. Very much not for me alone - but for the whole brilliant team in Grangetown
@grangecardiff
- diolch Ash, Nia, Corrin, Yvonne, Lizzie, Sian & pawb!
I do wonder if those who were very vocal about the Welsh Govt reform to second home taxes, will be even more exercised about this 'anti-English' measure?? [For the avoidance of any doubt this a story about the UK Government in England]
Its another of those days today when I don't think anyone can envy the decisions that
@fmwales
and his colleagues have to take. Very worrying data and a limited range of challenging options to further control spread. Pob doethineb iddo!
DIOLCH - THANK YOU. We now have volunteer coordinators in place in each area of Grangetown. If you are isolating and need help - these are your first port of call - they will work with local volunteers to provide support where we can. Stay safe all
@BreesAnna
@MarkDrakeford
I don't agree - and the cafe you picture seems to be serving takeaways to socially distanced groups in accordance with the guidelines. (And I look forward to returning there too after a nice walk over to Sully island)
A large crowd assembled in Cardiff in pretty heavy rain to protest against Boris Johnson’s anti-democratic proroguing of parliament!
@WalesForEurope
The fall in the R Rate in Wales to 0.7 is further evidence to support the cautious approach of
@fmwales
- interesting to note that the R Rate has crept upwards in the South West of England to 1.0 - so the virus is no longer in decline along (part) or the border
As we enter the last few weeks of the campaign can we all try and remember that a large majority of candidates are standing because they have a genuine desire to improve their communities. Disagree with plenty, but there's should be no place for personal abuse
Seen a few comments lately referring to Drakeford and Johnson as dictators. Both were duly elected - and will face the voters again ... we can disagree (profoundly) with their decisions, but I think that kind of language undermines democracy. We all have a chance to vote them out
Really pleased to have been appointed by
@Amanwy
to Chair the Active Travel Board. Plenty of work to do - what examples from your local area can you identify of excellent active travel projects? Also - what barriers are there to active travel? All comments welcome!

I'm very interested in views on independence - especially the group of people who aren't convinced but aren't 'would never ever' support - what are the key questions you'd like to see answered as you weigh up the issue of Welsh independence?

@YsgolHamadryad
This morning I had the real privilege of greeting new pupils (and staff) at the
@YsgolHamadryad
school gate. Bit emotional to see massed ranks of children from Grangetown and Butetown (and their families) enjoying Welsh medium education. From 17 pupils to 262 in 5 years - DIOLCH
Welsh twitter seems to have had a bit of a meltdown over the weekend. Please lets be kind and be gentle with each other - surely we can disagree with good people with good intentions without thinking they are satan incarnate ... surely ...
This is at one level a brilliant story about Local Government action in one part of Wales - well done Ceredigion &
@EllenapGwynn
, but also tragically demonstrates what could have been achieved via nation-wide contact tracing months ago. Mixture of admiration and anger from me!
I've just got a digitial copy of Mam Gu's record from the
#1921Census
- I wonder how many living people will be able to read their own record? Very much look forward to showing her the detail.
Hugely honoured to join the Gorsedd at my home Eisteddfod this year and in the company of great people and good friends! Diolch bawb! Methu aros am yr wythnos fawr
@eisteddfod
Diolch i bawb am eu cyfarchion hyfryd i Mam Gu yn 100 oed. Thank you to everyone who wished Mam Gu well on her 100th birthday. This photo has been sent to me, Gu walked up and down the road and was greeted (socially distantly) by her neighbours applauding from their doorsteps!
Why are cats such heart breakers - 5 days missing and I’d convinced myself something awful had happened, and Carwyn saunters back in - keen for a big bowl of food but otherwise quite unbothered and unscathed it seems from his adventures!
Very touched last night to receive a plaque (ish) last night from
@cycletraining
Cardiff Cycle Workshop to recognise a decade of chairing the board (which came to an end during the pandemic). Fab to see the development of the workshop too.

Some gentle advice to the dozen or more AMs aspiring to lead their parties - focus on telling us why you'd be a great leader rather than why someone else would be a bad leader!
One aside on the Caerffili regs - given that masks are mandatory in shops surely its only now a matter of time that the whole of Wales follows. Masks for all (except those who are exempt)
My letter in today's
@FT
- not as blunt as it might have been had the article not been amended, but the point stands - sustainable and respectful tourism is key to the long term survival of viable and vibrant communities in both Cymru and Kernow
Just a historical reminder that three men (Saunders Lewis, Lewis Valentine & DJ Williams) burnt the bombing school at Penyberth in 1936, handed themselves into the police immediately, were tried at Caernarfon and the jury failed to reach a verdict.
This for me is a huge result in the context of the M4 relief road - the Conservatives, which is their right, sought a mandate to build a relief road without the support of the Welsh Government. It was roundly defeated at the ballot box
Two years+ into the pandemic I've finally succumbed to COVID. Its grim, and I'm annoyed with myself for becoming a little cavalier about the risks - won't be doing that again in a hurry. Lemsips & sleep seem to be way forward, though the cough makes restful sleep very difficult!
"To secure those advantages for the future we need radical reform of the UK, making it authentically a voluntary association of nations where sovereignty is held by each nation and then pooled for common purposes." Datganiad diddorol iawn gan

This is really stunning - two days ago

set up a crowd funder for medical supplies to the Ukraine. A substantial target of £5,000 was set - tonight it passed £20,000 Please RT and donate if you able to
The First Minister is calm and careful - his comments on the failure of Boris Johnson and the UK Goveenment to communicate regularly with the Welsh Government are very serious (and the equivalent of someone else bellowing their annoyance at full volume)
BBC News - School run: How Cardiff primary is transforming pupils' commute So exceptionally proud of everyone at
@ysgolhamadryad

Bore ma ces i'r fraint o gyfarch wrth y giat nifer o blant (a staff) newydd
@YsgolHamadryad
- bach yn emosiynol a bod yn onest o weld tyrfeydd o Grangetown a Butetown o bob cefndir yn mwynhau addysg Gymraeg - 17 o blant i 262 mewn 5 mlynedd. Diolch bawb!
RUNNERS! Here's some guidance on how to keep safe and healthy while out running during the COVID crisis. Feel free to share with your groups, and will update with any further Government guidance / legislation. STAY SAFE ALL!
It seemed like such a good idea at the time! 40+ miles ahead along the coastal path - if you see me wandering towards Penarth some time today say ‘helo’ and maybe ‘pob lwc’
In the furore over (problematic) process about the Salmond enquiry, important to remember the underlying issue here - a powerful man behaved (by his own admission) poorly (at the very least). I wish Sturgeon well today - one of the sharpest politicians I've ever come across.
Do you speak Welsh?
Here's a piece I've published today on
@NationCymru
- would welcome all comments ... particularly from those who aren't totally sure how they'd answer the question above!
Diwrnod hanesyddol yfory - bydd disgyblion cyntaf
@YsgolHamadryad
yn cyrraedd yr Ysgol uwchradd - yn bennaf
@Ysgol_Glantaf
- mae'r 17 cyntaf bellach yn ysgol o bron i 400 o blant yn gwasanaethu Grangetown a Butetown. Pob lwc i bawb 'fory!
The figures themselves are remarkable, but its also interesting to see the numbers of people sharing on twitter that they've joined
@YesCymru
- a wide range of backgrounds, perspectives, parties - but sharing a conviction that Wales could do far better than Westminster
I wonder if this is the view of
@PaulDaviesPembs
and the Welsh Conservatives? I hope Mr Jenkins will be pleased to find out that Welsh is indeed a phonetic language, and therefore relatively easy to pronounce with just a tiny bit of effort.
‘The European Union provided the glue that held the four nations of the UK together, without it the current structures cannot hold .... the union of the UK will be seen off by the unionists unless they are serious about new structures.’

Datganiad rhyfeddol ond cywir!
Lifting restrictions now doesn't prove that England, Scotland or Wales were right in December - no one properly knew how things would develop. England took the most risky public health approach, Wales the most cautious; we can only be clearer with hindsight.
One thing I don't understand about exemptions for masks is why we don't have a formal system for registering such exemptions like the COVID passes or passenger locator forms when travelling abroad?
Wedi bod yn bwrw golwg ar y Gymraeg yn Ngorllewin y ddinas - po tywyllaf y lliw y mwyaf o siaradwyr Cymraeg. Difyr gweld cryfder y Gymraeg yn Nhreganna, ac ardal pen uchaf Victoria Park o fewn trwch blewyn i fwrw'r 50%!
Anrhydedd o'r mwyaf cael ymuno gyda'r Gorsedd a'r criw ysbrydoledig yma fydd yn derbyn y Wisg Las Nifer o ffrindiau yn eu mysg - ond yn eithriadol o falch o gyd-ddathlu gyda fy nghyd-disgybl ysgol feithrin (and the rest)

What am amazing adventure yesterday - 9 legends from

set off to run 40 miles along the costal path from Porthcawl to Penarth and everyone smashed it - along with an amazing support crew - Diolch bawb!
Puzzled that this important story about being Welsh and Black, Welsh and Pakistani etc and that being recognised in the census is covered yn Gymraeg on the BBC but not in English Any explanation
@BBCWales
?
Health Minister would have made 'different choices' with today's knowledge This is a sound and understandable response from the Health Minister, I wish UK Govt Ministers would show the same level of candour - it might help restore some trust?
Tybed, tybed all bobl fod yn garedig wrth drydar heddiw? Mae na sawl ffordd tuag at annibyniaeth a sawl persbectif arno, a lot fawr o bobl egwyddorol a chall heb eu hargyhoeddi. Bydd mwy o gynnydd rwy'n siwr wrth wrando a sgwrsio yn hytrach na gweiddi a chondemnio ...
Clearly the right decision in pretty dire circumstances by
@wgmin_education
but spare a thought for Uni admissions tutors who have filled their courses through clearing and now have more (possibly lots more) students with a claim on a place ...
Having seen lots of discussion about 24-7 vaccine rollout, it strikes me that it could be a good pilot project for a Health board in Wales to offer late night / early morning appts for lower priority groups once supply is robust (Feb/Mar) ... how about it?
@vaughangething
Mae hi di bod yn braint aruthrol i wasanaethu fel Cadeirydd
@YsgolHamadryad
o'r cychwyn. Neithiwr oedd fy nghyfarfod olaf o'r llywodraethwyr gyda'r ysgol o 17 o blant bellach bron yn 400 o ddisgyblion erbyn mis Medi. Diolch am bopeth! Anrheg hyfrd (a gwobr raffl!)
I’ll make one personal comment today. As my time working (secondment) in the FMs office came to an end some weeks ago in rather stressful circumstances, the FM was unfailingly kind and courteous and I appreciated it greatly. Diolch
@vaughangething
Really important to highlight that the English system is privatised whereas the Welsh system is local authority led and public (and seems to be working far better!)
Privatising track & test when the NHS and Public health are the experts who should have been put in charge, can only be about profits! A friend is still trying to get tests for her care home when web direction isn't working - more leaving care homes behind
OMG! First time on the new

Delighted to see the Welsh team take bronze ... in what must be the rarest of sporting contests Wales v GB (in fact I can't remember another example of that before?)
Diolch i bawb am eu sylwadau caredig am y rol newydd! Wir yn ddiolchgar. Digonedd o waith i wneud. Beth felly yw'r enghreifftiau orau yn lleol o deithio llesol? ac yn yr un modd beth y'ch chi'n meddwl yw'r rhwystrau mwyaf? Hapus iawn i glywed pob sylw.
I can understand a candidate who has suffered a shock defeat not wanting to watch the votes be counted for many hours; but when the declaration comes its time to give the winning candidate their moment, to listen to them, and to offer your congratulations.
