Paper rejected. Three constructive reports, all saying the paper is timely and interesting, no fundamental flaws. You know, on some days, academia sucks.

(Relatively young, male) colleague: Is your son better? (I stayed home yesterday because he was sick)
Me: He's already better. Today my husband is staying with him, and he'll be back at daycare tomorrow.
Colleague: The relationship to mom is closer, you should stay home.

🚨I'm looking for a PhD student! 🚨
Interested in tax policy, esp. tax evasion, corp. tax, inequality, CO2 taxes? Apply to work with me!
It's a paid position (~3000€/month), in Ingolstadt (30 min north of Munich), no German necessary at start.
Since Thursday morning, we're four! We're all doing fine and are fully in love with the newest family member.
For the next months, this account will tweet a bit less about tax policy (and perhaps a bit more about kids 😉).

Thread 👇 1/11

The standard recommendation here in Germany is to use baby toothpaste until 6 because many kids won't figure out how to spit it out until that age. I'm sure the Chameleon toothpaste is great decoration!
If you submit a paper where I might be a referee, PLEASE PUT THE FIGURES/TABLES IN THE MAIN text and not at the end. Or at least give me clickable links.
Or you can do your PhD in Germany, where we're largely happy to take any applicant with a good master's degree, who follows the news and appears genuinely interested in economics research. 🤷♀️
And I suspect that holds for many good (but not world class) universities.
The competition in Academic econ is so cutthroat at this point that if you don't know you want to get a PhD by 14 (and how to get one!) the odds are stacked way against you.
It's a large part of the reason why the discipline is not diverse and why success is so hereditary.
5 years ago today I started as a full professor in Ingolstadt. Good moment to look back, perhaps?
The first year I was very unhappy.I felt overwhelmed. 2-3 new courses to prepare per semester. Only teaching & organizing, no research. Noone more senior to ask about hard decisions

@YohannesBecker
@SBachTax

Tomorrow the German government decides whether daycare reopens on Monday. It won’t. The German Academy of Sciences

Made me aware of how privileged I am to be able to travel everywhere, and how much harder it is for those from other countries to be successful academics... ☹️
When I found out about this pregnancy almost nine months ago, I realized that I really needed to resubmit three revisions and submit one paper. Yesterday (only a few days before the calculated date of birth) I submitted the last of them 💪

Maybe large parts of Europe have found a middle ground they can live with? From the outside, the discussion in the US looks terribly polarized, with loud arguments in favor of extremes that I personally find crazy - at both ends of the spectrum.

👇 Thread 👇
