It's crazy bc when Ukrainian students needed universities & jobs, the EU launched fellowship schemes, the UK classified them as home students for cheaper tuition & provided loans, & Australia increased scholarships. For

the picture is v different.
The predicted death toll in Sudan is around 15,000. A VERY inaccurate number, that is likely much higher & rising. No way to verify numbers as humanitarian intervention is blocked & lacking. By September its predicted 2.5 million in Sudan will die of hunger alone. My god.
In case of any interest, I’m speaking about
#Sudan
’s recent history on
@afikra
’s upcoming podcast. Hoping to debunk some narratives and shed light on overlooked dynamics. History can tell us a lot. Follow them to be notified when it’s out.
I’ve been finding comfort in looking at old pictures of my family. Here is my grandmother, giving a speech in 1975, at the United Nations, about Sudanese culture and history.
A letter from a correspondence between my my great grandfather, Jamal Mohamed Ahmed and W.E.B Du Bois about the importance of prioritizing African scholarship (1961).

If any Sudanese students need support w/ applying to universities and finding funding, please send me a DM. I will try my best to provide application and funding tips. I can also answer some questions on visas
30 years later, our doors are open to accept condolences for my late great uncle & martyr, Majdi Mahjoub, who was unlawfully executed by Bashir’s regime. You were unjustly taken from us before most of us even got to meet you. We are fighting for you and all martyrs. الله يرحمه
I understand the important role the media can play in platforming
#Sudan
, but why must we be seen as XXX-passport holders for ppl to care? Why do ppl not care otherwise? There is SO much not being covered in the mainstream media - Darfur, inhumane border treatment etc
Even if the conflict in
#Sudan
was miraculously resolved tonight, the damage to hospitals, schools, banks, & places of work would take years to rebuild. Even to just get to the weak capacity they were at before
My episode on
#Sudan
’s political history is out now:
Thanks
@afikra
for the opportunity to provide some historical context to the current crisis. I’ll say it again: history can teach us a lot.
LSE has quite a large archive collection on
#Sudan
. I don’t think many people know about this. They have tons of gov docs from the 1940s till the 1990s. Here’s the link:
This is true. I’m often asked where I get my news on Sudan from and when I say it’s social media, ppl seem to not take that seriously bc it’s not an ‘official’ channel. There is def misinfo on social media but it is a tool we use when mainstream news coverage fails us
In fact-checking things in relation to Sudan, you realize just how abysmal the international and mainstream news coverage has been of the war. This is why so many of us stay on social media. It's the only place we can get information about the situation affecting our loved ones.
Opening a humanitarian corridor should never be a contentious decision. Whether in Palestine or Sudan, thousands lose their lives because basic notions of solidarity and protection are absent & borders continue to contribute to violence
History isn’t apolitical & isn’t just about ‘facts’ and dates. Being Sudanese in a mainly white & male-dominated space means that my work is deeply personal so yes I’ll have opinions. Why are other historians allowed to have opinions but when I have them I’m biased?
I didn't make that doc because I think uni education is the most important thing right now. I made it bc I wanted share info w/ young Sudanese who are genuinely concerned about their futures. I'm helping where I can & will keep doing that
moments after I left the protest this morning, the Kenyan police launched tear gas on peaceful Sudanese & Kenyan activists marching to parliament to deliver a petition in solidarity with the
#SudanUprising
. Shame on them.
Tired of this ‘things can be replaced’ rhetoric. Yes ppl’s health & safety is the most important. But our families built homes & a living in
#Sudan
. These are the houses where our parents got married & where we grew up. We can want that back too.
Tonight I’m thinking about all the historical artefacts and archives we’re losing due to this senseless war. I was looking forward to going to Sudan to complete my PhD at the archives. Now, having access to our history feels like a privilege. It should be a right for all.
A couple of weeks before the conflict broke out in
#Sudan
, I spoke to some resistance committees about their efforts & hopes for the future. My report for
@Peace_Rep_
hopes to shed light on the importance of supporting RC’s in todays conflict and beyond.
Terrible. I am reminded of all the times I arrived to Sudan and was greeted by my uncles . I’m thinking of all the times I would walk out of baggage claim and see my cousins standing on the balcony jumping up and down before they ran down to give me a hug & welcome me home.
Zionists are RT-ing my tweets about Sudan to distract from what’s happening in Gaza. If your politics support genocide in Gaza, then they are sure as hell not welcome in discussions about Sudan. Liberation and decolonisation for all!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i just completed my masters degree 🥺🥺🥺 some of the hardest few months of my life and definitely feels weird to even be happy at a time like this but alhamdulilah alhamdulilah alhamdulilah Cambridge is DONE! Now back to police abolition
This
@UKinSudan
evacuation plan is a complete joke. My friend lost contact with her grandparents (British nationals) 8 DAYS AGO, and they can’t reach the evacuation point because they are being told they need to get there themselves. No support from the gov’t.
This report highlights that the RSF has deliberately burned homes, targeting and attacking civilians in El Fashir,
#Darfur
throughout this month. Undeniably showcasing their genocidal intentions, as the world watches on..
REPORT:
Targeted razing southeast El-Fasher neighborhoods,
Additional conflict-related damage in Abu Shouk IDP camp,
3 communities with arson attacks between 20-26 May (total 32 communities since 31 March),
RSF present in east of El-Fasher

History can tell us lot. Sudan’s military has sought a seat in politics since the independence process began. The British were having secret political meetings with military during the decolonisation process. What we’re seeing today is no accident, all engineered & cemented

As the RSF and SAF continue to fight for control over Darfur, the int’l community is silent. Call it what it is - a genocide.

I could write a lot about what it’s like being a young black Sudanese women in these spaces & how historians and non-historians alike critique me bc I have ‘too many opinions’ but every1 else is ‘analytical’
Is there anything that can be done for Sudanese whose passports are about to expire? My family members have passports expiring in less than 6 months. Sudanese embassies have always sent ppl to Sudan to renew their passports.
Sudanese students have had their degrees paused countless of times bc of political turmoil and conflict - things that should never impact students but that is the reality. Now ppl are without transcripts or funds to finish or start uni
3 women in Soba need to get to Egypt as the situation in the area becomes more more and dire & dangerous for women. They don’t have money for a bus. Is there any way to get them money + a bus OR get them to the border?

I am trying platform marginalised voices/groups from Sudan and/or the diaspora who would like to get their stories/opinions out in mainstream media. I will help edit, translate & it can also be an interview if u prefer. Can also anonymise. DM if u know any1! Pls RT!
Our families spent decades building homes and lives with no support from the state. Now, everything they built is being threatened by the same people who have deprived our country for decades.
Cannot believe that my family back in Sudan is now contemplating leaving our family home or staying not knowing what’s going to happen, no one wants to leave without my grandma who can’t move and no one wants to leave the house my grandparents poured their sweat and blood into..
ramadan kareem everyone 💫💕🌙 thinking of those who will be fasting and protesting in 40 degree heat this year in Sudan & the families of our martyrs who will be spending this holy month without their loved ones. #تسقط_بس
Sudanese students are some of the brightest and dedicated individuals i know. Education opens so many doors. It may not be *the* most important priority to u rn but it IS important and ill stand by that.
I received a lot more DMs than I expected so pls be patient with me. In the meantime I’ll work on writing up a resource for everyone to use and refer to 🙏🏽

Another day where someone has told me they didn’t know about what was happening in
#Sudan
. I’m not even blaming ignorance - so much of the int’l community & it’s citizens just think this is business as usual for us.
for journos - as important as it is to get on the ground coverage of the situation, pls consider that ppl are overwhelmed, trying to conserve power, energy etc. take the route of speaking to the Sudanese diaspora when possible - they have more capacity atm.
For aspiring Sudanese PhD students!! Here is a great opportunity at

Ppl are QTing me & saying African problems so African solutions. Not only is this exclusionary but NO country should deny anyone asylum. Also when we want to solve our problems, it is Western countries that are the first to be involved. When we want help, they look away.

Joint Facilitators’ Statement by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the United States of America on the Extension of an Agreement on a Short-Term Ceasefire and Humanitarian Arrangements in Sudan
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the United States of America announce that on May 29,
"Not only have the youth been at the forefront of these protests, but we have also made it clear that we will not settle for anything less than the complete removal of Bashir’s regime and free and fair elections"
Why do the RSF loot personal cars that serve no purpose in battle? At first I thought it was for defecting purposes but after hearing more and more reports about this, I’m not so sure..
& not every1 has the luxury of relocating, finding new schools and starting new lives. Even among those that do, leaving was the hardest decision to make
thank u to the stranger who spoke up and then offered to walk me home when I was being harassed on the bus last night. I was too scared to speak up for myself, so thank you again for your bravery and kindness
There were so many exciting projects in the works to preserve Sudan’s museums and archives and make them more accessible. I hope that we can find ways to preserve our memories and recent history, so that generations to come can fall in love w/ Sudan the same way we have.
Let people mourn in peace. Why are they being forced to play when they can barely hold back tears? How can you champion their mental health and then put them in a situation like this? Let them go home to their families
