@Gab_H_R
It is THE metric, it has already dropped due to people dying (younger than they should have) during the acute phase.. But when people will realise it keeps dropping despite big wave of infection and death being over, it will remind us how the world was wrong to take Covid lightly
In a shop, wearing a mask
“are you sick?”
Me: “no, all good”
“So this air is ok for everyone but not good enough for u?”
Me: “I agree that health authorities should make air purification a priority, in the meantime I have a mask if u wish”
“No need I am not afraid”
Me: “ok then”
I am the only one masked at work since a few months now.
It is not rare that some people come to share with me some health anecdotes like « strong lights hurts me eyes » or « my Apple Watch never recorded such high BPM after biking » « do you think it is because of Covid »? 1/3
“You are way too excessive in your Covid precautions”
Me: “actually I am rather in the average within people who keep reading scientific publications about Covid impact on human health”
My wife: our baby is always sick, we should check his white blood cells
Me:…I agree
Her: … ah you and your Covid! You think that everything unsual related to health is about Covid
Me:🦗🦗🦗
Her: you don’t say anything?
Me: you said it perfectly…
In the last 4 weeks 16 people at work were sick and had to take a week off
For 11 of them it was a “heavy cold” and for the other 5 it was Covid.
Only 5 did a test…
The other ones:
“preferred not to know”
“it doesn’t make a difference”
“test don’t work anymore anyway”
My wife: (after arguing to not enter in a crowded shop with the baby I have kept 1 week out of the day care in prevision of Xmas with my old parents)
“I want to live like everyone else”
Me: “I prefer to live like smart people full of empathy”
Merry Xmass…🎄
My wife: « Louis and Emma (fake names) are not coming anymore for dinner tomorrow. This is because of you, they are afraid to come a bit sick in our house! »
Me: « sorry I am confused, are you thanking me? »
Meeting at work today. I learnt that:
“this year the flu is really bad”
“allergies in January are not that rare anymore”
“I was not careful enough during holidays, I was so sick, I should have washed my hands more”
What a time to be alive to benefit from such wisdom
My wife got a text from her mum that one of her childhood friend died at 40. She told me she will call to know more. I said «if it is not an accident I would not be surprised if she died in her sleep » my wife rolled her eyes.
Call happened 4h ago.
she doesn’t talk to me since.
Yesterday a colleague told me: « thank you for still wearing a mask, I unfortunately gave up myself to social pressure but looking at you makes me feel happy in a way. My dad died of covid 2 years ago and at that time too many people were already thinking it was just a cold.» 3/3
I am old enough to remember that young kids didn’t get pneumonia in May (in northern hemisphere).
And don’t tell me it is b/c of the vaccine… Covid vaccination rate in <10yo is anecdotal
Nor b/c of immunity debt with lockdown 3years ago and mask that kids <6yo never worn
Thoughts on how this collective denial helps build "moral responsibility escape"
I was telling to a friend whose parents are 80+ that he should wear a mask on the plane on his way to see them.
He said that “anyway they don’t pay attention, they can catch it everyday” …
1/3
Interesting shift from « long Covid doesn’t exist », « long Covid is psychosomatic », « long Covid only happen if infected before vaccination » « there is no long Covid after omicron » to… (be ready)
« long covid is here to stay » … those people were born before shame I guess
Leana Wen of the Brookings Institute thinktank, who experienced the institute from her couch, declares that you need to just accept your child being disabled by LongCVD.
I usually answer « I don’t know, research is still busy understanding all the mechanisms but I am behaving carefully with Covid in case the answer is yes » 2/3
…This was implying “if they catch it from me or at the supermarket it is the same/you will never know where it came from“ ☹️
well for me it is TOTALLY NOT the same knowing I simply COULD have been the one infecting my parents with all possible (post acute) health issues.
2/3
This is the same than: “we should test before inviting this pregnant women at our place, no?” “why? she goes to restaurants indoor anyway…" 😮
THIS IS FUCKED UP THINKING, first, risks adds up and second, you cannot dilute like that your moral responsibilities…
3/3
My wife tells me I should make more compromises in term of Covid risk taking.
I don’t disagree with the principle of finding your right balance but it seems the more I make effort the more the rest of the world runs away from me,
taking even less health precautions than in 2019.
@laurenstricos
I convinced my pregnant wife to only attend the cocktail of a wedding which was outdoor but to sadly skip the indoor dinner and party. She hated me for that. 10 days later 30% of guests were infected…
I have no issue being told I am part of “cult” which think that FEWER Covid infection per year is a GOOD thing and that things like mask in health care and clean air in school should exist.
@1goodtern
My friends tell me “you wear a mask indoor all the time for what? you had covid once (via my baby at home from day care) and me like 2, may be 3x max. Such a big bother for little difference at the end”
Me: “I think skipping 2 extra Covid infections matters a lot”
@PainInTheNeck__
@oliver_phil
@LauraMiers
3wk ago I had a review at work with top management in a room. I was the only one masked in front of all my reporting line. I said that I am extra careful because of my 5months old baby (which is true)…but I would do the same w/o baby. A week later 11 out of 16 positive. Not me.
@mervin13014
is spot on!
« If there is a 10% chance of developing
#LongCovid
after 1 infection, at a rate of 4 infections/year, and your household is made of 4 people, after how many months do you have a 50% chance that at least 1 person in the household develop
#LongCovid
? »
As a chemist I am not saying this is a good idea to inhale vapor coming from a Teflon pan warmed too high, but I wonder about which PA agency makes a worldwide release to talk about « Teflon Flu » at a time where we have a huge denial of global Covid wave
Your kid is always sick, it seems you need to swallow a pill:
Blue: this is because of immunity debt coming from those few weeks of lockdown 3-4 years ago
Red: this is because Covid infections can lower immunity for months, evidences described in 100s of scientific articles
@chantz_y
I wear a FFP2 mask whenever I am indoor & crowed outdoor places, I don’t want anyone to catch Covid because of me.
Every time I see someone else with a mask I can feel the smile in their heart and I know the more we are, the more people afraid of social pressure will join.
Imagine. You train for 4 years to participate to
#ParisOlympics2024
, you want to put all the chances on your side to perform well and to win a medal, but you don’t think putting a mask in the plane or in indoor crowded places is necessary…
The split today is 5/85/10 I would say. What do you think think will happen when the middle group will not be able to deny anymore that people die a bit too much and a bit too young…
One way public health authorities will try not to losing face in front of all the 2023 delayed deaths from 2021/22 reinfections is that they will claim that those deaths are the consequence of a new more lethal variant that changed the game… and not previous cumulative damage
When you challenge them a bit, the last arguments of Covid minimisers is always: “and anyway, we cannot avoid it! so please believe me when I tell you there’s nothing to worry about catching it multiple times per year….”

If the medical staff doesn’t believe that we have to protect vulnerable patients in places they come to be treated, I think they should change job, May be they should try selling cigarettes ?
@laurenstricos
I convinced my pregnant wife to only attend the cocktail of a wedding which was outdoor but to sadly skip the indoor dinner and party. She hated me for that. 10 days later 30% of guests were infected…
@1goodtern
In the same spirit
Me: « Look at this study about the bad effect of Covid infection on XYZ »
Minimiser: « your study is about unvaccinated people, back in 2020 »
Me (1 year later): « look, this is still true on vaccinated people »
Min: « but it was delta, now it is Omicron »
…
@1goodtern
This was my biggest fear when my wife was pregnant in late 2021… luckily we have managed to avoid Covid infection. when I read studies like the one below or stories like in your tweet …I have goose bumps…
@lisa_iannattone
Exactly, you decide to expose yourself and your family due to social pressure, but NO ONE from this social peer group will be here to help, support and even listen if long Covid takes your/your children health away
@1goodtern
Indeed, if u are not informed how can you take the good decision even if you are smart…
People tell me I am part of the extreme minority regarding Covid cautiousness.
I reply that I behave rather in the average of people who read scientific article about Covid effect on health.
@PacificGirl2021
She is a nice person, never want to hurt anyone but she cannot handle well mental pressure, so after a certain point denial was for her the obvious path.
We have 2 young kids and I want to live a happy and healthy life with them every day and not only half of it…
@1goodtern
My wife was pregnant during delta wave.
she asked her gynaecologist at 6m if she could go to an indoor wedding.
Gynaecologist said: “of course you are vaccinated ”
I said “no way”
I guess it will take time for those doctors to admit they were wrong…
@laurenstricos
I convinced my pregnant wife to only attend the cocktail of a wedding which was outdoor but to sadly skip the indoor dinner and party. She hated me for that. 10 days later 30% of guests were infected…
@elisaperego78
Long covid is a Russian roulette but we know that too much effort too soon is not good… racing the Tour de France while positive leaves very few empty chambers in the barrel…
Those who told you it was safe to catch Covid again and again are the same ppl who said Covid was now a “classic winter respiratory virus”
They had to change narrative and now talk about “typical summer wave”
Keep trusting them when they say it is safe, they know what they do
@alexmeshkin
Also, even when the long term damage will become obvious (like 5x in stroke and heart attack rate) vocal people will blame vaccine and not the virus so it will add even more defiance to vaccine…
The split today is 5/85/10 I would say. What do you think think will happen when the middle group will not be able to deny anymore that people die a bit too much and a bit too young…
When I talk to « minimiser » they initially downplay the health risk, but if conversation continues and brings evidence of Long Covid with Omicron, despite 3x💉 the narrative becomes « and anyway we cannot do anything about it, right ? » they should rather be called « defeatist »
@PeteUK7
I have this kind of chat with friends and colleague like every week. Some tell me at the end that I am like an antivax (but anticovid)…and I reply « well antivax were quoting populist newspaper and Qanon website while I am taking to you about Nature and Cells article »
@JMcanerin
They don’t like to see anything that breaks the imaginary safe world they want to live in. For them seeing someone with a mask is like seeing a beggar in Disneyland…
4- “I was actually more sick from all the other virus I got after Covid than Covid itself, you see? You worry for nothing”
Health is usually better with a immune system in good shape. Try to pace your Covid infections a bit more…
Top 5 remarks from Covid minimisers that are full of irony but that their authors don’t realise…
1-“close this f…ing windows we will all get sick”
Nice paradigm on the benefit of ventilation
One way public health authorities will try not to losing face in front of all the 2023 delayed deaths from 2021/22 reinfections is that they will claim that those deaths are the consequence of a new more lethal variant that changed the game… and not previous cumulative damage
@TheVertlartnic
I loved this one as this is all what the Vertlartnic is about: absurb humour to wake up denier/minimiser. Much more effective than to throw at them tons or scientific articles
@TRyanGregory
This is a smart communication plan to create doubt in the mind of people about the root cause of the condition they may get after repeated Covid infection. I guess next ones will be: “red meat cause heart attack” then “pollution can cause brain fog”
@brownecfm
And the irony is that by doing so they might infection after infection before the vulnerable…
I am not immunocompromized but I don’t want to become
I don’t have any underlying cardio issue but I don’t want to get some
I am not diabetic but I don’t want to become
@chbeziers
@robrabbo
@DmodosCutter
Do you also want me to clarify what brain hemoragie in foetus mean?
My objective was to protect my baby.
And because you asked, the grand father of the bride was in hospital for 2 weeks and one of the best man still cannot do competitive biking anymore.
@curiousdatacat
She knows. Remind her will be counterproductive for my couple 😅. Actually she is even more upset that the fact I was right means that this situation of precaution will not end soon…
I think this is an issue because what ppl take out from this conversation is “my doctor told me not to worry, so I will not take any precaution” while the message was “it may be concerning but the effort to avoid it are very big”.
So people are not considering making effort..

After the dinner the friends told me they spent a wonderful evening it was great, cosy, not noisy. The only one who didn’t thank me was my wife.
She said what she wanted was not going to restaurant or not, but it was to live like in 2019 and not having to think mitigations

@TRyanGregory
I think I know why people want to believe mask don’t work. Because if one day they get long Covid after yet another infection they can blame fatality (and not themselves) and say « this long Covid sucks but there was nothing more I could do to avoid it, mask don’t even work »
@JimBethell
I took the plane 2x this week, easy to see when it was.
I am sure you know the % of air coming from other passengers´ lungs when CO2ppm is 2000ppm and above
@1goodtern
“Guys we need to make sure people don’t link their health issue to Covid, if not our public health friends will get their ass cooked.
We should take all the long Covid symptoms and spread in the media news about non Covid related ways to get them.
March will be blood clot.”
@1goodtern
…Wanting to believe mask don’t work so when they get long Covid they can ultimately blame fatality (« there were nothing we could do anyway ») and not their lack of effort to protect their health
@TheVertlartnic
“Stop reminding me I choose to ignore this virus and all the delayed health consequences please, you make my denial more difficult and spoil my day.
@BelindaB1012
@_marching_Ents_
“Everything” in this conversation stands for “health related issues that see their trend unexpectedly reversing/breaking after 2019” and I think, yes, they would deserve to have a proper Covid related mechanism assessment for sure…
@1goodtern
@sameo416
I also offered to fund 50% of air purifier investment in my baby’s day care. The owner didn’t do it as « a day care is meant to help children build immunity… » She has now closed her day care as she had no energy anymore to deal with running it… I had to find a new day care.
