i think this is precisely right. the actual economy (not the stock market) is, in fact, quite bad and people will keep just voting against incumbents until it improves (it will not improve)
Truth be told we're probably just going to careen back and forth between one term presidents until the entire thing cracks apart. They can't do anything about the economy because those particular levers were removed from the public sector 70 years ago. Year of the Four Emperors
