The Maple Leafs set franchise records in points & finished 4th in the NHL with sub .900 goaltending for half the year. The way they’re being talked about today is ridiculous
Yeah, Kyle Dubas told Auston Matthews, Mitch Marner and John Tavares to score 1 goal in 5 games. Idk how anyone with eyes watched that series and is blaming the GM. Some real mental gymnastics going on. No team wins a series with 1 goal from their 3 highest paid players.
If that was Marcus Stroman’s last start as a
#BlueJay
he’ll undoubtedly go down as a top 10 SP in franchise history... possibly top 5?
46-44, 3.81 ERA, 775.2 IP, 624 Ks, 1.28 WHIP. Plus the shimmy shimmy
Mark Giordano has 11 points in 19 games since coming to Toronto. 47 point pace in an 82 game season. All while being a stable presence defensively and helping Liljegren develop. He wanted to be here. Two second round picks plus they got Blackwell!
Rielly Lyubushkin stats tonight at 5V5
TOI: 14:08
Shots: 7-2
Shot Attempts: 12-6
xGF%: 87.2
Three really solid games for that pairing since Boosh came back.
Hi friends, I don't usually talk about personal stuff on here, but my Dad is dealing with a very serious infection in the Brain and he's going into surgery in the next 12 hours. Been a rollercoaster few days. Doctors first thought it was Brain Cancer. Just asking for prayers
TOR has drafted six goalies in the Matthews era. Haven’t had a home grown goalie since Reimer and before that, probably Potvin. But Joseph Woll is 9-2-0 with a .924 SV% to start his career. Signed for two more years at 766K. Still early, but maybe one of the darts landed
Defensemen in the Maple Leafs’ organization
KHL Dmen of the year 2020
OHL Dman of the year 2020
QMJHL Finalist Dman of the year 2020
WJC best Dman 2020
WJC best Dman 2021
Muzzin, Rielly, Brodie as well
Whenever Ilya Lyubushkin is on the ice for the Maple Leafs at 5V5, their goalies have a SV% of .925. Whatever the hell he is doing out there, it’s working. Here’s every other defender. Not even close.
Criticize Dubas all you want for the Goaltending and Defence, this is his team. But where was this when Lou was here for 3 years and acquired exactly 0 good Dmen? When he spent two 2nds on 4th line Cs instead of the blue line. Then signed Zaitsev to 7 years and Marleau to 3 at 38
I know he got hurt... but Rielly-Lyubushkin 69% xGF as a pairing tonight against a Rangers team that has won 11 of their last 12.
Absolutely eat shit Stat nerds
You know who the Leafs could use? Boosh. Literally one of the lowest event players in the entire NHL on either side of the puck. Bring this track meet to a halt
Leon Draisaitl (20) had a 10 goal lead on Auston Matthews (10) entering the month of December. Two weeks in and Matthews has narrowed that gap to just three
All this exhausting contract talk just makes me appreciate Morgan Rielly that much more. Signed for 8 years below market value and with zero back and forth rumours
Team Save Percentage in all situations since February 1st
TOR (26th) .879
FLA (30th) .873
One of these teams are talking about emptying the cupboards for Claude Giroux and the other is cooked apparently.
The Maple Leafs have a problem scoring goals in the playoffs. And because of that, one of the core 4 might get traded this off-season. So naturally, people are suggesting it be Nylander, who leads the team in goals over the last 3 years. Backwards. Completely backwards.
John Tavares is an overpaid 2nd line centre who has been declining over the seasons. His defensive play suggests his contributions play a role in the numerous chokes the Leafs have undergone this season. Shouldn’t be long until fans see similarities between him and Dion Phaneuf.
Wes McCauley was a Ref in game 7 against Tampa, where Tavares had a goal called off for a similar play. He’s officiating here tonight. No call, goal stands
Always lots of talk about the Leafs not being good enough defensively and not having much young up and coming talent.
But no one will mention they also lost their best defenceman to injury and a top prospect to cancer. Obviously bigger things than hockey at play, but still
Blowing the 5-1 lead sucks, but I don’t sweat that. Back to back playing a fresh Florida team, goalie gets hurt, Campbell comes in cold. Everyone was gassed. That was 7/8 points against BOS, TB, and FLA in the last 10 days.
Won 6 months of Sportsnet+ free with Roll up the rim. People seriously pay for this? Picture quality is awful and it’s frozen twice in 20 minutes. The illegal streams are better than this
If the Leafs end up with
McCabe - Roy
Rielly - Tanev
As their top 4 next year, that’d be massive. Best top 4 they’ve had in my lifetime. Probably longer. If they did that and found a way to get a good 3C like Ross Colton or Morgan Frost, I’d be all the way back in on this team
Bob McKenzie saying just now that two Canadian teams are interested in Jeff Skinner who could be had on a shorter term deal at a club friendly number.... Oilers and Leafs
I am tired of the NHL constantly establishing new precedent whenever the Leafs play. Between Tavares’ goal being called back in game 7, Rielly’s goal being waived off in game 5 last year, the goal that was punted in against them last year and now this. All bullshit
Mitch Marner vs Mats Sundin in their first 8 seasons:
Marner Sundin
— 576 GP — 611 GP
— 194 G — 265 G
— 445 A — 367 A
— 639 PTS — 632 PTS
After Marner’s career, who will be the better Leaf?
#LeafsForever
Matthews needs 20 goals in the Maple Leafs’ 27 remaining games to become the first 60 goal scorer since Stamkos in 2011/2012. Would be just the third 60 goal season since 99/00. I say he does it
Out of 199 players to play at least 250 minutes in the last 3 playoffs, Brad Marchand has drawn the 20th most penalties per 60.
Your “if that’s not Marchand!!” plea here is just ridiculous.
William Nylander since 19/20 has the 11th most goals in the NHL with 43. He doesn't have 10% the amount of support from fans that Fred does and Fred is getting outperformed by Jonathan Bernier on the Red Wings.
The Ducks are terrible, so it's hard to gauge Lyubushkin's advanced stats... but all of his DEF metrics relative to his teammates have been positive. He's terrible offensively, but situationally, he's still an effective DFD who has been decent at getting pucks out his own zone
Did Pavel Mintyukov think Bobby McMann was just gonna let him make an outlet pass? Dude decides to make the play, doesn’t protect himself at all and gets hit. Shoulder on shoulder. 2 minutes for boarding would have been harsh. 5 and a game is just ridiculous
TJ Brodie and Jake McCabe held Kucherov and Point to 0 5V5 goals and less than 50% xGF% in the Tampa series. But because they struggled against Florida, people are suggesting the Leafs buyout Brodie and that their Dcore sucks. Yup, totally. Definitely smart.
You don’t think Bob, or Elliotte or Chris Johnston knew about Matthews having COVID? You think Simmons got the inside scoop on those guys? Never. They just let it be because they’re respectable people, nvm journalists
The narrative that Tampa badly out played TOR is lazy. They took advantage of some lopsided matchups for sure. Gio-Holl were outscored 2-6 at 5V5 and out chanced badly. Without either on the ice, TOR outscored Tampa 11-3 and controlled 54.29% of the expected goal share 5V5.
When the Leafs made the Mrazek trade and moved back from pick 25 to 38, many laughed when they said they still felt they got the best player available at 38. Understandable, but looks like they may have been right with Fraser Minten. Seems like he’s made the team at 19 years old
The Leafs lost tonight, but the Rielly-Lyubushkin pairing was at 64% xGF… against another top 5 team in the Bruins.
The stat nerds told us he was the worst Dman in the league. What happened?
I know he got hurt... but Rielly-Lyubushkin 69% xGF as a pairing tonight against a Rangers team that has won 11 of their last 12.
Absolutely eat shit Stat nerds
Leafs outshooting the Lightning 39-19 and are up 3-1 late in the 3rd. Wonder if this will be regarded as a statement or playoff type game. Or is that only when they lose to good teams?
The problem with people who use this argument is they act like all he does is score. They always ignore the fact that he’s in the 96th percentile in terms of his defensive play while also only having 4 PIMS.
McDavid, MacKinnon, & Kucherov won’t also be Selke finalists
Not ruling Matthews out for Hart. He undoubtedly makes the ballot (Top 5).
But remember, they HAVE a trophy for the league's best foal scorer — the Rocket Richard.
The Hart entails all the elements. Even the less glamorous ones.
Remember when people were saying Matthews wasn’t capable of making players around him better because he didn’t have many assists this year? Well, Marner gets hurt and Matthews has 8 assists in his last 7 games. Almost as if he just tailors his game to his line mates
Sonny Milano wasnt QO’d at 1.8M
Aston-Reese made 1.725M last year
I’d prefer both even at $4M than Kerfoot at 3.5M. Seravalli reported significant interest & Jarnkrok got a 2nd, 3rd, 7th at the TDL. Versatile winger, career high 35 pts. Kerfoot has had more 3 times. Just do it
Every time the Leafs place someone on LTIR, there’s always hoards of fans of other teams claiming circumvention. Like Murray didn’t have double hip surgery and Klingberg isn’t limping around. Yell at Tampa and Vegas
The Scoring chances were 7-18 with Matthews on the ice and 4-18 with Marner on the ice at 5V5. They got dominated while being spoon fed offensive zone starts all night. That was one of the most uninspiring hockey games I have ever watched.
Soft calls on Gio and Boosh. Bad penalties by Simmonds and Kerfoot. What made the Leafs so dominant in game 1 was their skating. Tampa tried to slow that up playing a trap. Leafs were number 1 in dump chances this year. Keep grinding and they’ll be fine.
The Leafs have thrown 42, 30 & 31 hits their last 3 games played. Quant hockey will only let go back as far as 16/17. But the Leafs have not thrown 30+ hits in 3 straight games in the last six years. The closest stretch was when they had 32, 39 and 29 from NOV 5th-11th of 2016.
My girlfriend goes to Uottawa, so we don’t see each other often. She said she was sending me something today & I had to be home. So the doorbell rings & I run to it in my PJs thinking it was a delivery guy. It was her. She flew home early. I was stunned, nearly a blubbering mess
For Leafs fans reflecting on the Zaitsev/Ceci trade: Zaitsev makes 4.5M and is dog shit. What the fuck are they gonna do with Connor Brown and Zaitsev instead of Brodie? Take a shower, read a book, go for a walk, it’s a wash.
I feel fortunate to continue this journey as a Maple Leaf in front of the best fans in hockey! I will do everything I can to help get us to the top of the mountain. GLG!
#LeafsForever
Leafs ranked 2nd in an Atheltic poll among agents for who they’d recommended clients to sign with. Obviously you can joke that it’s because the Leafs like to hand out money, but big part is stuff like this. Business is a business, but it doesn’t have to be cut throat all the time
Ryan Dzingel credited Leafs GM Kyle Dubas for the way his situation was handled. He remained in Arizona after the trade and knew he was going to get waived: "He called me and was honest, and you don't find that a lot in this league."
#SJSharks
Tavares has played more TOI against Elite players this season than Panarin, Kaprizov, Draisaitl, Scheifele & Pettersson. TOR is out chancing teams 480-381 at 5V5 with him. But tell me again how he's washed. Just because TOR is balancing their lines, doesn't mean he's a 3rd liner
I've seen "John Tavares is a 3rd liner" tossed around way too much lately. His 1.9 points per 60 at 5V5 this season were in line with Larkin, Barzal, Stamkos, Suzuki, Necas, Boeser, Giroux, etc... NONE of those players are 3rd liners. Tavares is still a good 2nd line player.
TRADE: We’ve acquired forward Ryan Dzingel & defenceman Ilya Lyubushkin from Arizona in exchange for forward Nick Ritchie & choice of our third-round selection in ’23 or second-round selection in ’25.
