Reporting on the continued epidemic of driver violence via automobile in Washington, D.C.

I am trying to imagine Mayor Bowser doing this and it is hurting my brain.
Absolutely LOVE this series, the Mayor of Boston @wutrain is taking public transit with different residents to learn about their commutes and how to make the systems/city work better for people! . Watch complete video here (this app makes you trim):

Killing the circulator bus so that a non-DC resident can get $515 million is wild. You have to be mayor for the city, not the region.
Other big cuts include the entire elimination of DC Circulator service, saving the city roughly $32M. And there's a massive cut to the Access to Justice service, which provides low-income people with attorneys. @DCATJComm said this would have "catastrophic consequences."

A checkpoint on North Capitol would impound hundreds, if not thousands, of cars owing thousands, if not tens of thousands of fines, the very first day. The very first day. It would be a huge public safety success.
Date: 9/11/2024.Location: North Capitol near Riggs Rd. Issue: Expired MD plate with $3,390.00 in unpaid DC fines.

Frequently metro bus card readers don’t work.
BREAKING: Metro GM Randy Clarke just announced the week after Thanksgiving Metro will launch an effort to go after fare evasion on Metrobus. It will involve uniformed & undercover police and video. Clarke says #wmata will focus on the lines with the “lowest compliance” on fares.

U street should be pedestrianized with trees, benches and stuff for kids to do along with restaurants and bars for adults. All I see here is cops making a racket.
UPDATE: @DCPoliceDept today said this large police response last night was one tactic to help enforce youth curfew during summer months. "We are not stepping down, we are actually stepping up,” Chief Pamela Smith said. STORY: @wusa9 . Another video 🔽

Very supportive of Metro, generally, but a reminder that it is free to drive into and around DC. This is not equality.
Starting Monday, MTPD will be taking additional steps to address fare evasion in the District following the passage of the Secure DC Bill. Paying your fare on Metrorail and Metrobus isn’t just a good idea - it’s the law. #wmata

Absolute wrong way to think of “equity.”.
D.C. task force gave up on trying to address the fake temporary tags on vehicles. Some drivers of these vehicles act recklessly with no repercussions bc they can't be traced by photo enforcement. Some have racked up 10s of thousands of dollars in speeding fines.

15 minutes a day for some commuters. Wow.
Metro regulator approves increasing speeds on the Red Line. Much of the Red Line outside downtown is built for 65-75 mph operation. But WMATA limited speed to 59 mph since 1986. With computer guidance and automatic door operation, this could cut 7 minutes off Red line runs.

Wild that Interim @DDOTDC thinks that a $200 ticket for blocking a bus lane is "inequitable." What do you call one car blocking 40 people on the bus, but "inequitable"?

Driving is a licensed activity. Why is it not incumbent on the licensee to understand *fully* what is required to keep that license? Insanity.
This is a gut-punch. I’ve been looking forward to this for some time. Pedestrians and cyclists will continue to look over their shoulders and be victimized at most DC intersections by drivers attempting to turn right.

please. throw in a TJs and we're cooking with gas. I'd love to live here - imagine having the Mall as your lawn!.
In recent months, momentum has been growing behind the scenes for a large-scale redevelopment of a cluster of aging, underutilized federal office buildings in between the National Mall and the Wharf. My latest:

Forgive me for paying taxes and expecting competent service in return. We’re not talking about rockets to mars; this is safely making transit accessible for everyone in all modes.
DC is unique because a significant portion of its white-collar workforce spends an inordinate amount of time and energy frustrated that blue-collar workers don't perform mundane local government tasks with clinical precision.

Need this down 16th, Georgia and NY Avenue yesterday, today and tomorrow.
The latest three-day crackdown on "ghost" cars and serial toll evaders at MTA bridges and tunnels led to 50 arrests, more than 1,800 summonses and the confiscation of nearly 200 vehicles, the MTA said Sunday. The crackdown on June 14, June 15 and June 17 focused on the RFK,

jesus h christ this is obscene.
Bike lane in Columbia Heights is a cruel joke. @DDOTDC it’s way past time to move the bike lane to the INSIDE of the parking/ unloading zone.

Union Market needs either 4th Ave or 5th Ave (dealer’s choice) to be a pedestrian mall with a ton of trees. Would complete the neighborhood and offer case study for the rest of the city.
Update: three more apartment buildings are complete at @UnionMarketDC including a whole row of retail spaces behind the market where they plan to activate the connecting plaza.

It is very weird that the success of Union Station appears to be measured by retail operations and not, you know, whether it is a good train station or not (it’s ok).
With DC commuter rail and Metro ridership still far below pre-pandemic levels, the ABP branch has gone dark at Union Station, joining the adjacent cafe and former H&M store, closed since the pandemic, and the more recently shuttered Starbucks. This whole front hall is now vacant.

Incredible that this happened. Incredible that it took until today. Let's go!.
The DC Council passed legislation cracking down on fake tags today. The bill "gives @DCDPW and other enforcement agencies authority to immediately tow and impound cars whose owners have blatantly flouted the law by having clearly counterfeit, obscured, or long-expired plates."

Columbia Heights is hot as hell anytime it’s above 85 and a lot of that is due to insufficient tree cover.
People often think building setbacks are necessary for creating room for street trees. But instead of taking living space from people you can use public space that would otherwise store private cars. 🌳 🌳 🌳.

No. Cars in the bike lanes and blowing over bollards are endangering cyclists. Bad headline @DCNewsNow.

we need to start treating MD/VA drivers the way they treat us.
$14 Million in fines issued In first 9 months since @DDOTDC & @wmata began using cameras on buses to enforce priority bus lanes. The District has issued 147,251 tickets for $100 each. Maryland tops the list w/ 51,978 D.C. 41,703. Virginia 38,908.@nbcwashington

10 zillion cars enter DC everyday without paying tolls. Not paying their fares accounts for a $1 billion loss yearly for Washington Metropolitan Transit Authority.
Roughly 40,000 trips go unpaid every weekday. Not paying their fares accounts for a $40 million loss yearly for Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority.

I wouldn’t care about $500k here and there if Bowser had put in bike lanes on Conn Ave or was a better administrator to literally any program or hadn’t killed the Circulator. But since she sinks everything she touches, here we are.
Lede sentence: The District has quietly hired a consultant via a sole-source contract to begin laying the foundation for how the city could build and finance a new stadium for the Washington Commanders. Didn’t DC taxpayers already pay for a study on this?.

I hope Trayon White gets expelled because it is unsafe to walk, bike and drive in SE and as long as he is in power, it will remain that way.
On eve of a DC Council move today to begin possible vote to expel him, W8 Council member was posting on Facebook from the Commander’s game in New Orleans yesterday.

Streetcars or BRT down Massachusetts, Connecticut and Georgia Avenue would make DC unbelievably better so quickly it would be crazy.
10 US cities with neighborhoods dense enough for fast, frequent rail transit—but no plans for new lines in them, a 🧵. #10.Washington DC. A mid-city line could link Silver Spring, Adams Morgan & Capitol Hill. A circle line could connect Georgetown, Arlington, Congress Hgts & H St

this particular intersection is full of blacked out luxe vehicles driven by assholes who absoutely refuse to stop as required by law for peds in marked crosswalk. prime PRIME place for cameras.
Pedestrians want to cross on a marked crosswalk. Driver wants to go. Road safety is a shared responsibility, so driver just goes and ignores pedestrians.

Texas got rid of paper tags. DC should, too. A paper tag on a car in DC should mean immediate stop and tow. #carviolence would plummit, IMO.
@myrna38717 @DCCarViolence @dccrimefacts @FakeTagsDC @KXAN_News in TX did a 6 year investigation that ultimately resulted in the law being changed and paper tags no longer being issued (effective in 2025). This is quite the read: @Zuk_DC @tjl @CMBrookePinto @charlesallen @CMCHenderson

Removing highways or functional highways in cities is always good. There should be no cloverleafs in DC, period.
Very cool project from @OPinDC. Reimagining the cloverleaf at North Capitol and Irving into a connected, vibrant neighborhood. Combined with the McMillan Reservoir and Armed Forces Retirement Home redevelopments, has the potential to completely transform this area of DC.

Absolutely crazy Nats-O’s game last night. But the best part was Dad was absolutely beside himself using a @bikeshare e-bike (first time!!) to lazily get home last night from Nats Stadium. Astounded at Penn Ave center lanes and 15th street, especially. Beautiful weather.

Looking at this map, seems clear that making the Mall-adjacent streets car free (school/tour buses excluded) would be crazy beneficial, safe and frankly awesome. Look at the mobility use already happening.
Anyone know what street that is in NW, the long straight purple diagonal running downtown? It could be a great arterial with protected micro mobility lanes, sure seems like a great candidate! #BikeDC

Martin is concerned about this and he lives in Switzerland. Will someone in power who lives in DC care as much as Martin? Unclear.
This driver/car got *29* traffic camera tickets, mostly for speeding, between mid-April and the end of May, with four speeding tickets alone on May 1, two of which were for 25 mph over the speed limit, and *seven* tickets on May 5. All told, 173 unpaid tickets. This is wild.

DC is a much richer city if 395 and 295 are ripped up.
chicago, ny, boston, seattle, and sf are richer than every region in europe except munich but the cities are universally shittier because all the money is funneled from the city to highway maintenance and racist exclusionary suburbia and segregated suburban public schools.
