This is something that needs to be seriously thought about and acted on at the highest level. But it’s tough to get law makers to agree on anything unfortunately, this hurts so many people in so many levels….
We already know that a child who enters middle school not reading or doing math on grade level has such a low chance of graduating high school. Why do we not gate keep these students from entering a traditional middle school and demand they learn to read and do math on grade level first? Not keep them in elementary, but not a traditional middle school either. It’s really their only hope. It’s almost impossible to raise reading and math levels after elementary in a traditional school setting.
