are supposed to be for emergencies - when did it become acceptable to us as a society to wait for hours for treatment in an EMERGENCY? How is it reasonable that there is nowhere for us to go for non-urgent medical care out-of-hours?
Downside of the repêchage? Nicole Caicado (Ecuador) false-started in her 400m heat and was DQ - didn't seem upset - commentators remarked on it. She ran the 200m repéchage 15min later. Deliberate false-start? If so very unfair on other athletes (including our

20. "Avoidable attendances" are non-urgent visits to the ED which could be treated in other settings, such as primary care. Often referred to as "inappropriate visits" but I dislike this term - most people attend ED because of a gap in services leaving them with no other option

21. I wait for the daylight and make my way home to a houseful of frantic friends who are horrified at my appearance and appalled at my experience. We're all appropriately chastened and nobody ever goes anywhere alone again that summer
6. Your world will shrink to the size of your tiny room, everything and anything beyond those 4 walls will be irrelevant. The bars of the cot will feel like prison bars separating you from the arms of your baby and a few feet across the room will feel like a million miles apart
3. Even a very sick child will fight tooth and nail against a needle. It took 4 of us (myself, 2 nurses and a doctor) holding my baby down to get an IV line in. The first time I cried as much as he did, but by the third time I was a pro at holding it together
22. I've analysed the clinical trial data myself and seen the evidence - there is no simple solution to ED crowding - the
#TrolleyCrisis
is a complex multifactorial problem. Here's another cold, hard fact - our health service is critically ill and ED crowding is just one symptom
3. I feel that stab of fear (that every woman has felt at some stage) & pick up the pace but I'm near the end of my session and tiring fast. He's gaining on me & I realise I can't outrun him (despite the fact I've represented Ireland in athletics) he's a man and he's just faster!
5. The man looks around wondering which way I've gone and he SMILES. I still remember the fear in that moment, trying so hard to be quiet, to control my breathing and my aching limbs and to this day I can actually smell the wet ferns I buried myself in at the memory of it

We've talked by DM & on email and I think that Mohsin is a very special human. If you read this article you'll see why...

10. Accept help in whatever form it's offered - it's not the time to act the martyr. The necessities on the ward are: a charger (more than one device is even better), a few changes of clothes (I got thrown up on multiple times) and lots of caffeine
13. The waiting is interminable, time crawls by as inexorably as the life-giving fluids drip through the IV line. Distraction is key - try to sleep, read a good book (thanks Chris!) or write a ridiculously long Twitter thread - anything to stop the negative thoughts consuming you
7. Despair will inevitably come for you - in the blackness of night do not, I repeat NOT let your mind wander down a dark path of imagining worst case scenarios... it's fiercely painful and entirely futile. It's very hard but try to stay positive (you won't manage)
