"Software Engineering" is for boomers. We're all YAML engineers now.
This chart is nuts. Software developer jobs down 70% from peak. People will blame the end of free money. But something way more interesting is happening. The middle class engineer is dying. And it's dying because they're not needed anymore. One good dev with Github Copilot ships what entire teams did five years ago. Microsoft just reported the highest revenue per employee in history. The "entry-level engineer" doesn't exist anymore. Instead, we have product builders who happen to code. Armed with AI, they ship entire products in days. Meanwhile, the truly elite engineers are making more money than ever. And they've shifted to working mostly on frontier tech. I mean the stuff that's really hard. AGI at OpenAI. Designing rockets at SpaceX. Self-driving car tech at Tesla. Product builders are becoming solopreneurs and creators Frontier engineers are making hedge fund money In 2025, "software engineer" doesn't mean what it meant in 2020. And that's what this chart really shows. The middle is gone. The top is elite status. And everyone else is becoming a builder.

@jjbauer15 I suspect I will need to spent time studying the Sunday chants during the week, marking everything (at least at first)

Since KDE Plasma 6 just landed in FreeBSD's latest ports tree, I decided to try it with Wayland for the past few days. My experience (Intel integrated graphics): - The plasma.desktop file must be patched to include `ck-launch-session` for wayland to work - After this change, a wayland session can be successfully started with SDDM! - Unfortunately, as soon as you press Ctrl+C (or most other key combos involving the control key) the session crashes - Workaround: If you disable SDDM and start plasma from a plain TTY login, the issue goes away. Launch with: `ck-launch-session /usr/local/lib/libexec/plasma-dbus-run-session-if-needed startplasma-wayland` - I tested out using ly (console-based login manager) instead of SDDM, and it worked to start wayland, but leaves a bit to be desired (login.conf customizations aren't applied, and pam_kwallet5.so doesn't work...investigation showed this is because ly does not clear out pam_env between users, yuck!) - When using wayland, switching virtual consoles (via Ctrl+Alt+F3) completely breaks all subsequent keyboard input, necessitating a hard reboot - Spectacle fails to take screenshots unless KWIN_SCREENSHOT_NO_PERMISSION_CHECKS=1 is set Based on these issues, I went back to X11. Unfortunately, X11 support continues to languish under Plasma 6. The compositor settings panel has been removed. Without my usual KWin options, screen tearing is much, much worse than it was in Plasma 5. But, things do seem quite promising. For the first time on FreeBSD, it's at least possible to see a KDE desktop using Wayland! And the animations are buttery smooth...maybe the teenagers are onto something here.

@sicutthomass The pre-55 liturgy is objectively better and makes far more sense, liturgically speaking. But since the 1955 "reforms" were legitimately promulgated and pose no real danger to the faith, there is a reasonable argument that we should accept them under pious obedience.

@contralto_C3 We only had three voices! About half of them couldn't make it for whatever reason. But I falsetto'd the vowels with them and they did a good job. We're going to start working on the Hosanna Filio David and Pueri Hebraeorum chants for Palm Sunday next. Seems fitting for kids
