First day of college, I was nodding intently to this prof who was talking about how to succeed in class (critical thinking, etc...) when he pivoted mid-lecture to say that the thing that worried him most was when students just nodded in agreement with him. I was mortified!

I feel that way about all sunbelt cities. I live in Houston and there's something about this place that makes it hard to feel one's connection to others. I feel like there is a suppressive/repressive element to the sun belt design; it keeps people apart.

My wife was diagnosed with migraine for six months—came home from neurologist crying because they told her to “exercise.” I went in with her the next time and asked for an MRI—turns out it was a tumor. Six months of hell for no good reason and then the neurologist was soooo nice.

During the last freeze, I looked into this and most of the plumbers I talked to said it's better to just leave a little water dripping from each faucet. Yes, you can drain the pipes and shut off the water at the road, but that's tough to do effectively.

I do think there's an important distinction between the left as in the Democratic party and the left as in the activist base of leftist politics. The party really does seem to fancy a political vision in which its goals are attainable under capitalism. The base doesn't so much.
